  • Influence of structure and composition upon performance of tin phosphate based negative electrodes for lithium batteries
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Electrochimica Acta. - 0013-4686 .- 1873-3859. ; 47:11, s. 1727-1738
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tin oxide and amorphous tin borophosphates have recently received significant attention as possible new negative electrode materials for lithium batteries. In this study. we have carefully investigated a number of different well-characterised tin phosphates as electrodes in Li-ion cells, in order to better understand the mode of operation of these materials and how their performance is related to structure and composition. The materials that were investigated were crystalline cubic and layered SnP2O7, LiSn2(PO4)(3). Sn2P2O7, and Sn-3(PO4)(2). and amorphous Sn2BPO6. Cubic SnP2O7 showed the best performance with a reversible specific charge capacity of > 360 mA h g(-1) and a capacity retention of 96% over 50 cycles when cycled between 0.02 and 1.2 V versus Li-m. The three Sn(IV) materials showed lower initial reversible capacity but better capacity retention than the three Sn(II) materials in the study. Their higher proportion of inert matrix material can partly explain this. However. cubic SnP2O7 cycled significantly better than its layered polymorph. which shows that the structure of the starting material is also of great importance. Another important conclusion drawn front the results is that it is not necessary for the starting material to be amorphous, or if crystalline, to have small grain size, to cycle well. The three pyrophosphates all show an initial reduction capacity that corresponds to around 2 Li per P2O74- unit more than is predicted by theory. This might be explained by reductive break-up of the P 0 P bond.

  • The distribution of chydorids (Branchiopoda, Anomopoda) in European shallow lakes and its application to ecological quality monitoring
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Archiv für Hydrobiologie. - : Schweizerbart. - 0003-9136. ; 156:2, s. 181-202
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study describes the chydorid (Branchiopoda, Anomopoda) assemblages from 66 European shallow lakes, and presents data relating the assemblages to lake type and ecological quality. Forty species, out of a total recorded European fauna of 60 species, were found in the study sites. No significant differences were found between chydorid assemblages associated with rock and plant substrata. Patterns of distribution were best explained primarily by latitude and pH. Chlorophyll-a, total phosphorus, water temperature and Secchi depth were also correlated with assemblage descriptors. Alonopsis elongata, Alona rectangula, Alonella excisa and Pleuroxus uncinatus were shown to have higher prevalence in certain lake types. The dominance of Chydorus sphaericus in a third of the study sites was linked to eutrophication and high levels of chlorophyll-a. The relationship between chydorids and lake ecological quality was more apparent at species rather than community level. This study identifies important typological factors affecting chydorid distribution, and confirms that patterns of chydorid distribution previously reported from regional studies hold true across Europe.

  • Investigations into the Vertical Distribution of PCDDs and Mineralogy in Three Ball Clay Cores from the United States Exhibiting the Natural Formation Pattern
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0013-936X .- 1520-5851. ; 38:19, s. 4956-63
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, we report the PCDD and mineralogical results from the analyses of 27 different samples from three ball clay cores from different locations in Kentucky and Tennessee. One goal of this study was to determine if there is a correlation between the mineralogy of the ball clay samples and the PCDD concentrations and/or homologue profiles in each sample. Samples from each of the three cores exhibited the natural formation profile with extremely high PCDD concentrations with low and mostly undetectable levels of polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs). The maximum toxic equivalents (TEQs) for Cores C-E were 2500, 440, and 15 000 pg WHO-TEQ/g, respectively. Although there does not seem to be a direct correlation between mineralogy and PCDD concentrations or homologue profiles, the mineralogy of Core C is substantially different than that of Cores D and E, which may in part explain the differences in congener patterns we observed among the three cores.

  • Spectroscopic data for Hg I and Hg II from beam-foil spectroscopy
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Institute of Physics Conference Series. - 0951-3248. ; 182, s. 329-330
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The spectroscopic data mercury (Hg) I and Hg II was analyzed from beam-foil spectroscopy. The wavelength was found to be of course fixed and independent of the light source and recording conditions. It was found that if the calculated branching ratio was correct, then the Hg II was an important constituent of fluorescent light tube plasmas. The wavelength region from 40 to 600 nm in overlapping wavelength regions was covered, depending on the choice of gratings and detectors.

  • The determination of ecological status in shallow lakes - a tested system (ECOFRAME) for implementation of the European Water Framework Directive
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Aquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems. - : Wiley. - 1052-7613. ; 13:6, s. 507-549
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 1. The European Water Framework Directive requires the determination of ecological status in European fresh and saline waters. This is to be through the establishment of a typology of surface water bodies, the determination of reference (high status) conditions in each element (ecotype) of the typology and of lower grades of status (good, moderate, poor and bad) for each ecotype. It then requires classification of the status of the water bodies and their restoration to at least 'good status' in a specified period. 2. Though there are many methods for assessing water quality, none has the scope of that defined in the Directive. The provisions of the Directive require a wide range of variables to be measured and give only general guidance as to how systems of classification should be established. This raises issues of comparability across States and of the costs of making the determinations. 3. Using expert workshops and subsequent field testing, a practicable pan-European typology and classification system has been developed for shallow lakes, which can easily be extended to all lakes. It is parsimonious in its choice of determinands, but based on current limnological understanding and therefore as cost-effective as possible. 4. A core typology is described, which can be expanded easily in particular States to meet local conditions. The core includes 48 ecotypes across the entire European climate gradient and incorporates climate, lake area, geology of the catchment and conductivity. 5. The classification system is founded on a liberal interpretation of Annexes in the Directive and uses variables that are inexpensive to measure and ecologically relevant. The need for taxonomic expertise is minimized. 6. The scheme has been through eight iterations, two of which were tested in the field on tranches of 66 lakes. The final version, Version 8, is offered for operational testing and further refinement by statutory authorities.
