  • Epiphytic Diatoms along Environmental Gradients in Western European Shallow Lakes
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Clean - Soil, Air, Water. - : Wiley. - 1863-0650. ; 42:3, s. 229-235
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Diatom-based assays have been successfully associated worldwide with the tropic status of lakes. Several studies have demonstrated a correlation between epiphytic diatoms and nutrient load in shallow lakes and wetlands. We examine the relative importance of environmental factors in explaining the structure of epiphytic diatom communities in a set of Western European shallow lakes. The effects of lake physical/chemical, morphometric, and geographical variables on diatom assemblages were tested using distance-based, canonical correspondence and regression analyses. Our results show that epiphytic diatom communities respond, mainly to physical/chemical variables, overriding the effects of lake depth, size, and location. The clustering of studied systems based along a total phosphorus concentration gradient concurs with previous classification of diatom taxa and nutrient state. Assessment of epiphytic diatoms provided a potential method for shallow lake classification.

  • To what extent do L2 students in UK Higher Education acquire academic and subject-specific vocabulary incidentally?
  • 2013
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Across the UK hundreds of thousands of international students pursue a higher degree through the medium of L2 English, attending the same lectures and reading the same texts as their L1 counterparts.  Although most of these international students will have initially passed through some form of English language proficiency gate-keeping exercise (such as minimum required IELTS scores), little allowance may be made thereafter for possible gaps in necessary vocabulary knowledge. Thus, L2 students may be implicitly assumed either to have sufficient working knowledge of the required vocabulary, or to be able to “pick up” this vocabulary knowledge incidentally during the course of their studies. This paper explores whether the Academic Word List (AWL) and subject-specific vocabulary knowledge of L2 undergraduates taking a degree in Biology at a UK university is, in fact, comparable to that of their L1 counterparts.  Results from a vocabulary test administered in the third week of Semester 1 of the first year of studies indicated a relatively substantial gap between the levels of vocabulary knowledge of L1 and L2 students. This gap was particularly apparent in knowledge of lower-frequency AWL vocabulary. A post-test was administered 28 weeks later, towards the end of the students’ first year at university. This paper will report on the results of the post-test and discuss to what extent this previously perceived linguistic “gap” between L1 and L2 students may have increased or decreased. The paper will also outline a follow-up investigation into the ways in which L2 students deal with unknown vocabulary encountered during the course of their undergraduate degree studies.

  • Innovation Strategy Development For Remote, Rural And Less Favoured Regions
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Practitioners Proceedings 2014 University-IndustryInteraction Conference. - 9789491901126 ; , s. 51-70
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper addresses the development of strategies to increase innovation in remote rural and less favouredregions. Many of the strategies aimed at developing innovation emanates from policy makers incentrally located urban conurbations and are assumed to be universally applicable. An example is thetriple helix model for economic development based around the idea of universities, business and publicsector organisations all coming together to foster innovation and economic prosperity. In many remote, rural and less-favoured localities there may not be a university or other knowledgeintensiveinstitution present. In fact, in some areas the public sector may also be weak and there may noteven be many local businesses operating. In those areas the social and community groups play the dominantrole. Therefore how can appropriate innovation strategies and policies be developed for remote, rural and lessfavoured regions that fully meet the needs of those areas? This question was addressed by theUNICREDS project.UNICREDS was an EU INTERREG IVC funded project including partners from remote, rural and lessfavoured regions from across the EU including the UK, Scandinavia and central Europe. The approachtaken by the project included assessments, a survey and reviews of best practice. This produced a largenumber of case studies and a wealth of insightful data on how innovation works in these regions andsuggested a new approach for future policy development in these regions. The main conclusion was that a one size fits all strategy for innovation is not effective for those regionswhose innovation system is not well advanced. For these areas much greater effort is required by policymakers to introduce locally developed processes and mechanisms that better reflect the needs of the majorregional stakeholders. Moreover, cultural and organisational innovations are also required within eachstakeholder to ensure a more effective contribution is made by universities to regional innovation processes.A new model aimed at assisting policy makers to develop innovation strategies for remote, rural and lessfavoured areas is also described.

  • Congenital dyserythropoietic anemia type III (CDA III) is caused by a mutation in kinesin family member, KIF23
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Blood. - Washington : American Society of Hematology. - 0006-4971 .- 1528-0020. ; 121:23, s. 4791-4799
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Haplotype analysis and targeted next-generation resequencing allowed us to identify a mutation in the KIF23 gene and to show its association with an autosomal dominant form of congenital dyserythropoietic anemia type III (CDA III). The region at 15q23 where CDA III was mapped in a large Swedish family was targeted by array-based sequence capture in a female diagnosed with CDA III and her healthy sister. Prioritization of all detected sequence changes revealed 10 variants unique for the CDA III patient. Among those variants, a novel mutation c.2747C>G (p.P916R) was found in KIF23, which encodes mitotic kinesin-like protein 1 (MKLP1). This variant segregates with CDA III in the Swedish and American families but was not found in 356 control individuals. RNA expression of the 2 known splice isoforms of KIF23 as well as a novel one lacking the exons 17 and 18 was detected in a broad range of human tissues. RNA interference-based knock-down and rescue experiments demonstrated that the p.P916R mutation causes cytokinesis failure in HeLa cells, consistent with appearance of large multinucleated erythroblasts in CDA III patients. We conclude that CDA III is caused by a mutation in KIF23/MKLP1, a conserved mitotic kinesin crucial for cytokinesis.
