  • The public sector cloud service procurement in Sweden : An Exploratory Study of Use and Information Security Challenges
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Public Administration in the Digital Age. - : IGI Global. - 2334-4520 .- 2334-4539. ; 8:1, s. 1-22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates the use of cloud services in the public sector and management of information security challenges in the procurement of such services. The findings are based on an exploratory approach that included a systematic literature review and a survey among the public agencies and municipalities in Sweden. The literature review is used to derive a conceptual framework that structures our empirical results into the three groups: 1) contractual and legal, 2) operational, and 3) managerial competency. The survey explored all these three groups. The findings show that the information security challenges are mostly related to the potential breaching of national security and laws applicable to cross-border cloud services. Most of the cloud contracts of public organizations are found to be supplier driven. In this case, lack of knowledge and awareness in managing procurement are mostly raised compared to technical risks.

  • Learners and their learning environment in Swedish higher education : Challenges in computer-mediated learning during COVID-19
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Digital Literacy. - Norway : Universitetsforlaget. - 1891-943X. ; 18:1, s. 35-47
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper aims at investigating the issues and challenges experienced by remote learning among the students of higher education in the context of Sweden during COVID-19. The pandemic situation influenced the emergence of a new learning context and the effectiveness of the computer-mediated remote learning from the sudden transition of traditional approaches poised many interesting issues. The empirical part of the study was based on a web-based survey conducted among 1767 anonymous students studied at 30 higher educational institutions in Sweden during the pandemic period in mid-2020. The results are presented in line with Zimmerman’s (2000) triadic (personal, environmental and behavioural) forms of self-regulation. The survey indicated that the perceived worries students experienced were oriented towards the students’ own personal situation, and future possibilities rather than the general state and welfare of the global society. The fast transition to online classes and seminars led to a lot of students being worried about their abilities to maintain efficiency in their studies. The findings of this study could provide refined insights into the issues that we should have in mind while formulating strategies for effective remote learning in such a changing environment during a crisis period not only in Sweden but also in some international contexts.

  • Exploring the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) compliance in cloud services : Insights from Swedish public organizations on privacy compliance
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Future Business Journal. - : Springer. - 2314-7210. ; 9:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The adoption of cloud services offers manifold advantages to public organizations; however, ensuring data privacy during data transfers has become increasingly complex since the inception of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This study investigates privacy concerns experienced by public organizations in Sweden, focusing on GDPR compliance. A qualitative interpretative approach was adopted, involving semi-structured interviews with seven employees from five public organizations in Sweden. Additionally, secondary data were gathered through an extensive literature review. The collected data were analyzed and classified using the seven privacy threat categories outlined in the LINDDUN framework. The key findings reveal several significant privacy issues when utilizing public cloud services, including unauthorized access, loss of confidentiality, lack of awareness, lack of trust, legal uncertainties, regulatory challenges, and loss of control. The study underscores the importance of implementing measures such as anonymization, pseudonymization, encryption, contractual agreements, and well-defined routines to ensure GDPR compliance. The findings emphasize the importance of implementing measures such as anonymization, pseudonymization, encryption, contractual agreements, and well-defined routines to ensure GDPR compliance. Furthermore, this research highlights the critical aspect of digital sovereignty in addressing privacy challenges associated with public cloud service adoption by public organizations in Sweden.

  • Information security objectives and the output legitimacy of ISO/IEC 27001 : Stakeholders’ perspective on expectations in private organizations in Sweden
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Information Systems and E-Business Management. - : Springer. - 1617-9846 .- 1617-9854. ; 21:3, s. 699-722
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Organizations use the ISO/IEC 27001 standard to establish an information security management system (ISMS). This standard outlines specific security measures and requirements that organizations can implement to effectively manage their information assets. However, the effectiveness of the standard’s problem-solving capabilities has raised some questions. Consequently, there is a continuous development of new governance methods that demand fresh approaches to validate security operations and measures. In light of this, research is being conducted to examine the application and impact of ISO/IEC 27001, as well as to analyze the challenges and knowledge gaps through theoretical perspectives. By employing stakeholder theory, the focus shifts towards integrating business and social issues and exploring how non-business pressures can influence stakeholder motivations in implementing standards. Additionally, it investigates the impact of these standards on an organization’s reputation, performance, and operations. Therefore, the objective of this study is to investigate the output legitimacy of ISO/IEC 27001 from the perspective of stakeholder expectations. To accomplish this, an interview-based study was conducted, involving relevant stakeholders engaged in information security management within private organizations in Sweden. The findings reveal eight key information security objectives. The results indicate that the level of output legitimacy of the standard varies across these objectives, ranging from high to medium to low. To achieve a high level of output legitimacy for ISO/IEC 27001, stakeholders must understand that the standard is not solely a technical document. Furthermore, stakeholders need to possess the appropriate knowledge and skills in information security to effectively navigate their work while leveraging the support provided by the standard.

  • Enhancing employees information security awareness in private and public organisations : A systematic literature review
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Computers & security (Print). - : Elsevier. - 0167-4048 .- 1872-6208. ; 106
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Preserving the confidentiality, integrity and availability (CIA) of an organisation's sensitive information systems assets against attacks and threats is a challenge in this digital age. Or-ganisations worldwide make huge investments in information security technological coun-termeasures. Nonetheless, organisations in many cases fail to protect their information as-sets as they rely mainly on technical solutions which are not contextually compatible and sufficient. As a matter of fact, a significant number of organisational information security in-cidents are due to the exploitation of human elements that directly and/or indirectly cause the majority of security incidents. Therefore, employees' information security awareness (ISA) becomes one of the critical aspects of protection against undesirable information se-curity behaviours. However, to date, there is limited synthesised knowledge about methods for enhancing ISA and integrated insights on factors affecting employees' ISA levels. This study, therefore, provides a systematic review of the literature on ISA and puts forward a state-of-the-art collection of ISA methods and factors for enhancing employees' ISA within both private and public sector organisations. The results indicate that various methods and factors are used to enhance employees' ISA in organisations. Theoretical models and gami-fication are the methods widely used in both private and public organisations, whereas the constructivist approach and violation detections are some of the methods used only in pri-vate organisations. Furthermore, this study offers some insights into the latest trends in ISA content development methods and factors, and fosters good ISA practice by disseminating information and knowledge amongst Information Security professionals to help them build an overarching ISA development programme in their organisations.

  • Factors Influencing Merchants’ Adoption of Cashless Payment Systems in Sweden
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: New Sustainable Horizons in Artificial Intelligence and Digital Solutions. - : Springer. - 9783031500398 - 9783031500404
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sweden is practically becoming a cashless society and possesses a clear sign of future competitiveness in cashless payment which has a wider impact on businesses and society at large. However, according to the existing research, there is a lack of comprehensive understanding of how this cashless society has shaped up and how such competitiveness can be sustained over time. There has been much research on consumer adoption of cashless payment systems, but the research on adoption by merchants is scant. Thus, considering the critical role they play in the cashless payment ecosystem, this study aims to understand the factors influencing the adoption of cashless payment systems from Swedish merchants’ perspective. The study used qualitative thematic analysis to identify seven factors: convenience, cost, trust, risks, norm, regulation, and customer preference. The findings contribute to limited knowledge of cashless payment systems in the context of Sweden and can be transferable to other countries.

  • Factors Shaping the Cashless Payment Ecosystem : Understanding the Role of Participating Actors
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: 35th Bled eConference – Digital Restructuring and Human (Re)action: June 26 – 29, 2022, Bled, Slovenia. - Maribor, Slovenia : University of Maribor University Press. - 9789612866167 ; , s. 161-186
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cashless payments have become increasingly popular around the world because of their numerous advantages. Moreso, the cashless payment adoption has been escalated during the theCovid-19 pandemic. However, there is a lack of holistic studies on the adoption and contemporary practices of cashless payments. The purpose of this study is, therefore, to provide a comprehensive understanding by identifying the participating actors and their crucial role in the payment ecosystem. Thus, the paper aims to address two research questions: i) Who are the participating actors in the cashless payment ecosystem? and ii)What are the determinant factors for the actors to adopt the cashless payment ecosystem? Through scoping literature review of 63 articles published in the last seven years (2015-2021), six participating ecosystem actors are identified with their determinant factors. The study contributes toward addressing adoption issues and serves as a basis for future empirical investigation.

  • The Emerging Technologies of Digital Payments and Associated Challenges : A Systematic Literature Review
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Future Internet. - Basel, Switzerland : MDPI. - 1999-5903. ; 15:1, s. 1-21
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The interplay between finance and technology with the use of the internet triggered the emergence of digital payment technologies. Such technological innovation in the payment industry is the foundation for financial inclusion. However, despite the continuous progress and potential of moving the payment landscape towards digital payments and connecting the population to the ubiquitous digital environment, some critical issues need to be addressed to achieve a more harmonious inclusive and sustainable cashless society. The study aims to provide a comprehensive literature review on the emerging digital payment technologies and associated challenges. By systematically reviewing existing empirical studies, this study puts forward the state-of-the-art classification of digital payment technologies and presents four categories of digital payment technologies: card payment, e-payment, mobile payment and cryptocurrencies. Subsequently, the paper presents the key challenges in digital payment technologies categorized into broad themes: social, economic, technical, awareness and legal. The classification and categorization of payment technologies and associated challenges can be useful to both researchers and practitioners to understand, elucidate and develop a coherent digital payment strategy.
