- A review of recent advances in high-energy ion beam analysis at the Lund Institute of Technology is presented. A nonvacuum specimen chamber allows chemical speciation using a combination of ion beam analysis and controlled heating. The development of a new versatile scanning proton microbeam based on a new dedicated accelerator, an achromatic triplet lens and an advanced specimen chamber is outlined together with the performance of a microVAX-II/VMEbus-based data acquisition system.

- The authors have constructed 7arcsec.5 resolution images of the CS J = 2-1 emission from a 3arcmin.5 section of the Orion molecular ridge using a maximum entropy algorithm to combine Owens Valley Millimeter-Wave Interferometer and Onsala Space Observatory 20 m data. The resulting images include all of the flux and have positional accuracy of 1arcsec-2arcsec on the small-scale features. The observed section of the ridge includes four condensations. The condensations have dimensions from 0.03 to 0.11 pc and virial massses from 30 to 80 M_sun;. Approximately 70% of the total mass within the 3arcmin region is contained in these condensations.

Food and nutrient intakes in Swedish diabetic children.

- Food and energy intakes in diabetic children, 7-9 and 12-14 years of age, were studied by the 7-d record method. The mean duration of diabetes in the younger group was 3.0 years and in the older group 4.2. The children had 3 main meals and 3.4 light meals daily. The median daily number of sandwiches was 7, often offered as snacks. All children used a low-fat margarine, low-fat cheese and low-fat milk. Sweets and diabetic food were seldom used. Of the energy intake protein contributed 18 per cent, fat 32 per cent and carbohydrates 50 per cent, including sucrose 2 per cent. Mean daily intake of fibre was 20 g. Compared to healthy children of the same age and from the same areas of Sweden the diabetics had a more regular meal pattern, their energy intakes did not differ, but the diet of diabetics was lower in fat and sucrose and higher in protein. The mean height, weight and BMI did not differ from healthy children.

Responses to ions and vasoconstrictor agents and changes of potassium fluxes in vascular smooth muscle during hypoxia

- An inhibitory effect of hypoxia (Po2 less than 5 mmHg) on electrical and mechanical activity of the smooth muscle of the rat portal vein has been described by Hellstrand, Johansson & Norberg (1977). The present study using the sucrose gap method confirmed their finding that spontaneous activity was completely (or almost completely) abolished by the low Po2. Increased [K+]0 from 6 to 24 mM or decreased [Na+]0 from 137.5 to 76.5 mM reinitiated electrical and mechanical activity during hypoxia. If muscle activity had already been increased by 24 mM K+ or 76.5 mM Na+ solutions in the aerobic situation, switching to hypoxia caused only partial inhibition. In hypoxic solutions of such altered ionic composition a gradual increase in muscle activity with time was seen especially in the low Na+-solution. Stimulating agents such as noradrenaline, acetylcholine, 4-aminopyridine, and Ba2+ could reinitiate spike activity and contractions under hypoxic conditions. Ouabain stimulated the activity in normoxia but no effect was seen in hypoxia. Uptake and washout of 42K+ was studied. No difference in uptake was found between normoxic and hypoxic conditions. The rate of 42K+ efflux was decreased under hypoxia. A similar decrease was produced by Mn2+ (0.4 mM) which, like hypoxia abolished phasic muscle activity. In both cases the reduction in 42K+ efflux may just reflect the elimination of action potentials. It is concluded from these results that profound hypoxia exerts its inhibitory effect on the smooth muscle to a large extent through membrane mechanisms responsible for pacemaker activity or spike generation. The electrophysiological response may be secondary to change in intracellular [Na+] or [Ca2+].

Tissue diagnostics using laser-induced fluorescence

- We have performed extensive investigations of laser-induced fluorescence in animal and human tissue aimed at instant tissue characterization. Autofluorescence, as well as specific fluorescence from HPD/DHE and other photosensitizers, has been utilized. The studies have been focused on the demarcation of malignant tumours and atheroscleortic plaques. A nitrogen laser or an excimer-pumped dye laser was used to induce fluorescence, which was analysed with an intensified optical multichannel system. A fibre-optic sensor system was developed for the clinical work. Multi-colour fluorescence imaging has also been demonstrated along a line and equipment for two-dimensional imaging is being constructed. Dimensionless spectroscopic functions, which are not affected by factors that are clinically uncontrollable have been employed for optimum tissue discrimination. The investigations have so far been performed in a time-integrated mode, but time-resolved studies are now being initiated to fully exploit the diagnostic power of tissue laser-induced fluorescence. In addition to a presentation of our own work a brief review of tissue fluorescence studies performed by other groups is also given.
