- SUMMARY Repetitive samples of three strains of the moujd Penicillium were subjected to pyrolysis-gas chromatography (Py-GC). From the chromatograms, 26 peak heights were used in a subsequent SIMCA pattern recognition analysis. This data analysis gives a marked improvement in the classification of the samples (100% correct, 85% unique) in comparison with the traditional analysis based on the average chromatogram of each class (92% correct, 45% unique)_ The data analytical method is described in detail using the Py-GC data as an illustration.

- The variability between repetitive pyrolysis—chromatograms of the same type of samples is not totally random, but can in part be modelled by a principal components (PC) model. This makes it possible to use efficiently repetitive pyrolysis-chromatograms of samples of known types to obtain separate PC models for each type. Samples of unknown origin can then be classified according to which of the PC models their pyrolysis-chromatograms are most similar. The methodology is illustrated using pyrolysis—gas chromatograms of two species of the fungal genus Penicillium.

- The reproducibility of multivariate measurements is discussed. Reproducibility of a second kind is defined, in which part of the variability between samples is described by a principal components model. The use of this generalized reproducibiity is shown to give an improved precision in the pyrolysis-gas chromatography of a Penicillium species.

Low molecular weight proteinuria and slight hyperlipoproteinemia in three mentally retarded brothers.

- Mental retardation in combination with proteinuria and a slight hyperlipoproteinemia was found in three brothers. The increased urinary protein excretion was dominated by albumin and the low molecular weight proteins retinol-binding protein (RBP) and beta2-microglobulin, indicating the presence of proximal tubular dysfunction. However, there was no glucosuria, phosphaturia or amino aciduria and the renal concentrating and acidification capacities were normal. A kidney biopsy in one of the patients revealed morphologic evidence of glomerular damage but a normal tubular structure. A mild hyper-beta-lipoproteinemia was found in the patients but not in their healthy siblings. The cause of this syndrome, hitherto not described, is unknown.

- A radioimmune method based on detection of IgE antibodies (RAST) has been used for allergen quantitation, both as a direct test and as an inhibition test. Commercially available allergen extracts from birch pollen, timothy pollen and horse dandruff were studied. Variations of the allergen concentration up to a thousandfold were found between some extracts and these differences were confirmed by the results obtained with the chopped human lung test and in provocation tests. The use of RAST for estimation of allergen concentrations seems to be of great value, since the method combines easy performance with high capacity and independence of allergic patients as test objects. The same set of test sera can be used for several years, ensuring standardized conditions.

- The clinical features of eight cases of primary hyperoxaluria have been summarized. The possibility of different phenotypes is discussed. A reduction, but no normalization, of the oxalate formation during pyridoxine therapy was found. A renal transplantation performed in one of the patients failed because of the formation of nephrocalcinosis.
