  • Monitoring and assessing technology choice: the case of solar cells
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Energy Policy. ; 28, s. 1037-1049
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objective of this paper is to suggest a methodology that will help us to determine if the present rate and direction of technological change is compatible with the development of a sustainable society. We combine two perspectives on technology assessment. The first focuses on current techno-economic trends and the second on long-term resource and environmental constraints to the diffusion of a new technology. We apply our approach to the case of solar cells. Based on an analysis of technology, actor and market dynamics we suggest that thin-film solar cells are about to dominate the industry. Within the thin-film family, there is competition between alternative designs. The diffusion of three of these will, however, be limited by resource, and perhaps emission, constraints. One design (a-Si) fares much better in terms of these constraints but is less efficient. Three policy issues are identified. First, the diffusion of solar cells is not yet self-sustained and further policy intervention is required. Second, the problems of the current thin-film designs suggest that there is a need for policies both to sustain variety and to balance that requirement with the short-term requirement of cost reduction. Third, policy must ensure that a diffusion of solar cells containing scarce metals does not lead to an erosion of environmental constraints.

  • Chronic musculoskeletal pain, prevalence rates, and sociodemographic associations in a Swedish population study
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of Rheumatology. - Toronto : Journal of Rheumatology Publishing Co. Ltd.. - 0315-162X .- 1499-2752. ; 28:6, s. 1369-1377
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of chronic regional and widespread musculoskeletal pain in a sample of the general adult population and study the association to age, sex, socioeconomic class, immigration, and housing area.METHODS: A cross sectional survey with a postal questionnaire to 3928 inhabitants on the west coast of Sweden.RESULTS: The age and sex adjusted prevalence of chronic regional pain (CRP) was 23.9% and chronic widespread pain (CWP) 11.4% among 2425 subjects who responded to the complete questionnaire. Odds ratio (OR) for CWP showed a systematic increasing gradient with age and was highest in the age group 59-74 yrs (OR 6.36, 95% CI 3.85-10.50) vs age group 20-34 yrs. CWP was also associated with female sex (OR 1.91, 95% CI 1.41-2.61), being an immigrant (OR 1.83, 95% CI 1.22-2.77), living in a socially compromised housing area (OR 3.05, 95% CI 1.48-6.27), and being an assistant nonmanual lower level employee (OR 1.92, 95% CI 1.09-3.38) or manual worker (OR 2.72, 95% CI 1.65-4.49) vs being an intermediate/higher nonmanual employee. OR for CRP showed a systematic increasing gradient with age and was highest in the age group 59-74 yrs (OR 2.22, 95% CI 1.62-3.05) vs age group 20-34 yrs. CRP was also associated with being a manual worker (OR 1.63, 95% CI 1.19-2.23) vs being an intermediate/higher nonmanual employee.CONCLUSION: Chronic musculoskeletal pain is common in the general population. Sociodemographic variables were overall more frequently and strongly associated with CWP than with CRP, which indicates different pathophysiology in the development or preservation of pain in the 2 groups.

  • Evaluation of various attenuation corrections in lung SPECT in healthy subjects
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Medicine Communications. - : Ovid Technologies (Wolters Kluwer Health). - 0143-3636 .- 1473-5628. ; 24:10, s. 1087-1095
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effect of increasingly more sophisticated attenuation correction methods on image homogeneity has been studied in seven healthy subjects. The subjects underwent computed tomography (CT), single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and transmission computed tomography (TCT) of the thorax region in the supine position. Density maps were obtained from the CT and TCT studies. Attenuation corrections were performed using five different methods: (1) uniform correction using only the body contour; (2) TCT based corrections using the average lung density; (3) TCT based corrections using the pixel density; (4) CT based corrections using average lung density; and (5) CT based corrections using the pixel density. The isolated attenuation effects were assessed on quotient images generated by the division of images obtained using various attenuation correction methods divided by the non-uniform attenuation correction based on CT pixel density (reference method). The homogeneity was calculated as the coefficient of variation of the quotient images (CVatt), showing the isolated attenuation effects. Values of CVatt were on average 12.8% without attenuation correction, 10.7% with the uniform correction, 8.1% using TCT map using the average lung density value and 4.8% using CT and average lung density corrections. There are considerable inhomogeneities in lung SPECT slices due to the attenuation effect. After attenuation correction the remaining inhomogeneity is considerable and cannot be explained by statistical noise and camera non-uniformity alone. ((C) 2003 Lippincott Williams Wilkins).

  • Characterisation of a liquid-xenon jet laser-plasma extreme-ultraviolet source
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Review of Scientific Instruments. - : AIP Publishing. - 0034-6748 .- 1089-7623. ; 75:6, s. 2122-2129
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A liquid-xenon-jet laser-plasma source for extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) and soft-x-ray generation has been characterized. Being a source candidate for EUV lithography (EUVL), we especially focus on parameters important for the integration of the source in EUVL systems. The deep-ultraviolet (DUV) out-of-band radiation (=120–400 nm) was quantified, to within a factor of two, using a flying-circus tool together with a transmission-grating spectrograph resulting in a total DUV conversion efficiency (CE) of ~0.33%/2sr. The size and the shape of the xenon plasma was investigated using an in-band-only EUV microscope, based on a spherical Mo/Si multilayer mirror and a charge-coupled device detector. Scalability of the source size from 20–270 µm full width at half maximum was shown. The maximum repetition-rate sustainable by the liquid-xenon-jet target was simulated by a double-pulse experiment indicating feasibility of >17 kHz operation. The xenon-ion energy distribution from the plasma was determined in a time-of-flight experiment with a Faraday-cup detector showing the presence of multi-kilo-electron-volt ions. Sputtering of silicon witness plates exposed to the plasma was observed, while a xenon background of >1 mbar was shown to eliminate the sputtering. It is concluded that the source has potential to meet the requirements of future EUVL systems.

  • Effects of random matter density fluctuations on the neutrino oscillation transition probabilities in the Earth
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 532:04-mar, s. 259-266
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this Letter, we investigate the effects of random fluctuations of the Earth matter density for long baselines on the neutrino oscillation transition probabilities. We especially identify relevant parameters characterizing the matter density noise and calculate their effects by averaging over statistical ensembles of a large number of matter density profiles. For energies and baselines appropriate to neutrino factories, absolute errors on the relevant appearance probabilities are at the level of \DeltaP(alphabeta)\ similar to 10(-4) (with perhaps \P-mue similar to 1% for neutrinos), whereby a modest improvement in understanding of the geophysical data should render such effects unimportant.

  • Microbial invasion and cytokine response in amniotic fluid in a Swedish population of women with preterm prelabor rupture of membranes.
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Acta obstetricia et gynecologica Scandinavica. - 0001-6349. ; 82:5, s. 423-31
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown an association between intra-amniotic microbial invasion and/or inflammation and spontaneous preterm birth. The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence of intra-amniotic microorganisms and cytokines [interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-8] in a Swedish population, with low incidence of preterm birth, of women with preterm prelabor rupture of membranes and their correlation to preterm birth. METHODS: Amniotic fluid was retrieved transabdominally from 58 patients with preterm prelabor rupture of membranes before 34 weeks of gestation. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analyses for Ureaplasma urealyticum and Mycoplasma hominis and culture for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria were performed. IL-6 and IL-8 were analyzed with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). RESULTS: Microorganisms in amniotic fluid were detected in 13 patients (25%). Patients with bacteria detected in the amniotic fluid had significantly higher levels of IL-6 and IL-8. An amniotic fluid concentration of IL-6 >/= 0.80 ng/ml [relative risk 1.93, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.13-3.29, sensitivity 63%, specificity 75%] was associated with an increased risk of delivery within 7 days. There was also an association between IL-8 and preterm birth (< 34 weeks). CONCLUSIONS: Intra-amniotic microbial invasion and inflammation in this population of Swedish women with preterm prelabor rupture of membranes were similar to data reported from populations with a higher incidence of preterm delivery. Amniotic IL-6 correlated to the presence of microorganisms and delivery within 7 days and IL-8 to delivery before 34 weeks.

  • T-cell-mediated cytotoxicity toward platelets in chronic idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura.
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Nature medicine. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1078-8956 .- 1546-170X. ; 9:9, s. 1123-4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Chronic idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is a bleeding disorder that is characterized by increased platelet destruction and is believed to be autoantibody mediated. In this study, CD3+ T cells from ITP patients had increased expression of genes involved in cell-mediated cytotoxicity. In addition, cytotoxic cell-mediated lysis of autologous platelets was shown in active ITP. Our data suggest that T-cell-mediated cytotoxicity is an alternative mechanism for platelet destruction in ITP.
