  • Laminin-1 promotes angiogenesis in synergy with fibroblast growth factor by distinct regulation of the gene and protein expression profile in endothelial cells
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Biological Chemistry. - 1083-351X. ; 279:22, s. 23766-23772
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Laminins are widely distributed extracellular matrix proteins. Certain laminin isoforms are predominant in vascular basement membranes and may be critical in maintaining the stability of the mature vessel. On the other hand, formation of new vessels during angiogenesis requires degradation of the basement membrane, exposing the endothelial cells to other laminin isoforms in the surrounding extracellular matrix. We studied the effects of laminin-1 (LN-1) in different in vitro and in vivo models for angiogenesis. LN-1 induced angiogenesis in the chicken chorioallantoic membrane to the same extent as fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2), and vascular development in embryoid bodies was stimulated in a synergistic manner by FGF-2 and LN-1. LN-1 promoted differentiation of endothelial cells in three-dimensional collagen gels, both in the absence and presence of FGF-2. Formation of tubular structures induced by LN-1 was accompanied by increased expression of Jagged-1, a marker of endothelial differentiation, and increased levels of FGF-2 and FGFR-1 transcripts. LN-1 did not regulate signal transduction pathways known to operate down stream of FGF-2. Thus, phosphorylation of ERK was detected in FGF-2- but not in LN-1-treated cells. Taken together, this suggests that laminins may play a fundamental role in angiogenesis by directly affecting gene and protein expression profiles in endothelial cells.

  • Car user responses to travel demand management measures: Goal setting and choice of adaptation alternatives
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Transportation Research D. ; :9, s. 263-280
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Travel demand management measures can be used to encourage car users to set car-use reduction goals when experiencing impairments in travel options. In forming plans to reduce car-use contingent on such goals, car users consider a range of adaptation alternatives including more efficient car use, suppressing trips, and switching travel mode. These adaptation alternatives, it may be argued, are implemented sequentially over time according to a cost-minimisation principle. A focus group study was conducted gauging the creativity of car-using households when contemplating adaptation alternatives, followed by an Internet-based questionnaire study in an attempt to obtain quantitative estimates of the size of car-use reduction goals and frequency of implementation of adaptation alternatives. The data revealed that the effects of travel demand management measures and trip purpose on the setting of car-use reduction goals were small. While the cost-minimisation principle seemed to dictate stated choices of adaptation alternatives, further research needs to examine the ways in which the principle must be qualified.

  • Roles of information technology for households adaptation of private car use to travel demand management measures
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Intelligent Transportation Systems. ; :8, s. 186-194
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Travel demand management (TDM) measures targeting changed or reduced private car use in urban areas prompt individuals and households to choose more efficient car use (chaining trips, car pooling, choosing closer destinations), to suppress trips and activities, or to switch travel mode. We conjecture that these choices are made sequentially over time according to a cost-minimization principle. In general, less costly changes may however be less effective. Several potential ways are proposed in which intelligent transportation systems may reduce the costs of changes or reduction in car use, thus presumably rendering TDM measures more effective

  • Romanfigurer ger liv åt tentans patientfall
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Läkartidningen. - 0023-7205. ; 100:43, s. 7-3425

  • The frequency of amblyopia among visually impaired persons
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Acta Ophthalmologica Scandinavica. - : Wiley. - 1395-3907 .- 1600-0420. ; 80:1, s. 44-46
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: To investigate the frequency of amblyopia among visually handicapped patients. Methods: The study is a retrospective investigation of all living patients registered in four Visual Rehabilitation Centres in a region in southern Sweden. The area's total population numbered 865,612 persons of whom 11,365 were registered as visually handicapped (with visual acuity ≤ 0.3 in the better eye). Results: Amblyopia was the main cause of decreased visual acuity in one eye in 1.72% (195 of 11,365) of the patients. The average age of the patients with amblyopia was 69 years (9−95 years) and 28.2% of these patients were less than 65 years old (the age for retirement in Sweden). The median visual acuity in the amblyopic eye among these patients was 0.1. The median visual acuity in the nonamblyopic eye was 0.2. The most common cause of decreased vision in the nonamblyopic eye was macular degeneration (39.5%). Bilateral amblyopia was present in 13 (6.7%) of the amblyopic patients. By comparing this study with earlier studies, we can calculate that about 1.2% of the persons with amblyopia 0.3 or lower will eventually become visually handicapped. Conclusion: A small but considerable number of patients who attend the Visual Rehabilitation Centres have amblyopia as a cause of their visual impairment. Since amblyopia can be treated if detected in childhood, later visual rehabilitation of these patients can be avoided or delayed, thereby reducing rehabilition costs for society.
