  • Cooperation, dialogue and ethics
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: International journal of human-computer studies. - : Elsevier BV. - 1071-5819 .- 1095-9300. ; 53:6, s. 871-914
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes some of the basic cooperative mechanisms of dialogue. Ideal cooperation is seen as consisting of four features (cognitive consideration, joint purpose, ethical consideration and trust), which can also to some extent be seen as requirements building on each other. Weaker concepts such as ‘coordination’ and ‘collaboration’ have only some of these features or have them to lesser degrees. We point out the central role of ethics and trust in cooperation, and contrast the result with popular AI accounts of collaboration. Dialogue is also seen as associated with social activities, in which certain obligations and rights are connected with particular roles. Dialogue is seen to progress through the written, vocal or gestural contributions made by participants. Each of the contributions has associated with it both expressive and evocative functions, as well as specific obligations for participants. These functions are dependent on the surface form of a contribution, the activity and the local context, for their interpretation. We illustrate the perspective by analyzing dialogue extracts from three different activity types (a travel dialogue, a quarrel and a dialogue with a computer system). Finally, we consider what kind of information is shared in dialogue, and the ways in which dialogue participants manifest this sharing to each other through linguistic and other communicative behaviour. The paper concludes with a comparison to other accounts of dialogue and prospects for integration of these ideas within dialogue systems.

  • Performance analysis and overload control of an open service access (OSA) architecture
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Performance and control of next-generation communication networks : [ITCom's Conference on Performance and Control of Next-Generation Communication Networks] ; 9 - 10 September 2003, Orlando, Florida, USA (SPIE proceedings series). - : SPIE. - 0819451274 ; 5244, s. 176-186
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The trend of the service architectures developed in telecommunications today is that they should be open in the sense thatthey can communicate over the borders of different networks. Instead of each network having their own service architecture with their own applications, all networks should be able to use the same applications. 3GPP, the organization developing specifications for the 3G networks has specified the standard Open Service Access (OSA), as a part of the 3G specification. OSA offers different Application Protocol Interfaces that enable an application that resides outside a network to use the capabilities of the network. This paper analyses the performance of an OSA gateway. It is examined how the overload control can be dealt with in a way to best satisfy the operators and the 3'rd parties. There are some guiding principles in the specifications, but a lot of decisions have to be made by the implementors of application servers and OSA gateways. Proposals of different requirements for an OSA architecture exist such as, minimum amount of accepted calls per second and time constraint for the maximal total delay for an application. Maximal and fair throughput have to be prioritized from the 3'rd parties view, but profit is the main interest from the operators point of view. Therefore this paperexamines a priority based proposal of an overload control mechanism taking these aspects and requirements into account.

  • PAMELA : A satellite experiment for antiparticles measurement in cosmic rays
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science. - 0018-9499 .- 1558-1578. ; 51:3, s. 854-859
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PAMELA is a satellite-borne experiment that will study the antiproton and positron fluxes in cosmic rays in a wide range of energy (from 80 MeV up to 190 GeV for antiprotons and from 50 MeV up to 270 GeV for positrons) and with high statistics, and that will measure the antihelium/helium ratio with a sensitivity of the order of 10(-8). The detector will fly on-board a polar orbiting Resurs DK1 satellite, which will be launched into space by a Soyuz rocket in 2004 from Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, for a 3-year-long mission. Particle identification and energy measurements are performed in the PAMELA apparatus using the following subdetectors: a magnetic spectrometer made up of a permanent magnet equipped with double-sided microstrip silicon detectors, an electromagnetic imaging calorimeter composed of layers of tungsten absorber and silicon detectors planes, a transition radiation detector made of straw tubes interleaved with carbon fiber radiators, a plastic scintillator time-of-flight and trigger system, a set of anticounter plastic scintillator detectors, and a neutron detector. The features of the detectors and the main results obtained in beam test sessions are presented.

  • A polynomial-time algorithm for near-perfect phylogeny
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: SIAM journal on computing (Print). - : Society for Industrial & Applied Mathematics (SIAM). - 0097-5397 .- 1095-7111. ; 32:5, s. 1115-1127
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A parameterized version of the Steiner tree problem in phylogeny is defined, where the parameter measures the amount by which a phylogeny differs from perfection. This problem is shown to be solvable in polynomial time for any fixed value of the parameter.

  • Asymptotic form of zero energy wave functions in supersymmetric matrix models
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics B. - 0550-3213 .- 1873-1562. ; 567:1-2, s. 231-248
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We derive the power law decay, and asymptotic form, of SU(2) X Spin(d) invariant wavefunctions satisfying Q(beta)psi=0 for all s(d) = 2(d - 1) supercharges of reduced (d + 1)-dimensional supersymmetric SU(2) Yang-Mills theory, of, respectively, the SU(2) matrix model related to supermembranes in d + 2 dimensions.

  • No zero energy states for the supersymmetric x(2)y(2) potential
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Letters in Mathematical Physics. - 0377-9017 .- 1573-0530. ; 60:2, s. 191-196
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We show that the positive supersymmetric matrix-valued differential operator H = p(x)(2) + p(y)(2) + x(2)y(2) + xsigma(3) + ysigma(1) has no zero modes, i.e., Hpsi = 0 implies psi = 0. The result depends on a virial type argument for the corresponding supercharge. The model may be regarded as a simple relative of dimensional reductions of supersymmetric Yang Mills theories.

  • Engineering of metal microstructures : process-microstructure-property relationships for electrodeposits
  • 2002
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The relationships between growth-conditions, topography and microstructure, and physical properties of electrochemically deposited copper, nickel and zinc-iron alloys were studied. Growth was investigated while systematically varying process parameters such as electrolyte chemistry, type and concentration of additives, current density, and mass transport. The grown films were analysed by a variety of characterisation techniques - including optical light microscopy, electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction, thin film tensile testing, and nanoindentation.Studies of anomalous Zn-Fe alloy electrodeposition from a chloride-based electrolyte, suggest that a zinc-chloro-hydroxy-precipitate layer forms close to the cathode during deposition. Deposition current density, as well as the chloride-content of the electrolyte, controls the stability of the corresponding boundary layer at the cathode and hereby the composition of the deposited Zn-Fe alloy. Alloys with Fe-contents ranging from 5-80 wt-% were deposited from the same electrolyte, characterised by a sharp change in deposit-composition with electrochemical current density, which made the deposition of well-defined Zn-Fe compositionally modulated alloys (CMA) possible.Ni membranes were deposited from a Watts type electrolyte with or without the sulphur-containing additive sodium-saccharin. This additive caused a strong levelling as well as a grain refining effect on Ni-deposits. However, additional microstructural defects were introduced in the deposits with the use of sodium-saccharin, which led to embrittlement of the deposits. By using ultrasonic streaming near the cathode during electrodeposition in the Watts type electrolyte, improved material distribution in machined 3-dimensional groove geometries was observed.Electrochemical deposition of buried contacts for high efficiency silicon photovoltaic cells led to the development of a patented process for superconformal Cu-filling of high aspect ratio vias, while further studies on electrochemical Cu-deposition from acidic electrolytes led to the formulation of a 3-dimensional zone-structure diagram for electrodeposited Cu.
