  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - : American Physical Society. - 2470-0010 .- 2470-0029. ; 97:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using a data sample of 448.1 x 10(6) psi(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII, we perform search for the hadronic transition h(c)-> pi(+)pi(-) J/psi via psi (3686) -> pi(0)hc. No signals of the transition are observed, and the upper limit on the product branching fraction B(sigma(3686) -> pi(0)h(c))B(h(c) -> pi(+)pi(-) J/psi) at the 90% confidence level (C. L.) is determined to be 2.0 x 10(-6). This is the most stringent upper limit to date.

  • New Insight into Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid Tetrasodium Salt as a Sacrificing Sodium Ion Source for Sodium-Deficient Cathode Materials for Full Cells
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1944-8244 .- 1944-8252. ; 11:6, s. 5957-5965
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sacrificing sodium supply sources is needed for sodium-deficient cathode materials to achieve commercialization of sodium-ion full cells using sodium-ion intercalation anode materials. Herein, the potential of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid tetrasodium salt (EDTA-4Na) as a sacrificing sodium supply source was investigated by intimately blending it with sodium-deficient P2-type Na0.67[Al0.05Mn0.95]O2. The EDTA-4Na/Na0.67[Al0.05Mn0.95]O2 composite electrode unexpectedly exhibited an improved charge capacity of 177 mA h (g-oxide)−1 compared with the low charge capacity of 83 mA h (g-oxide)−1 for bare Na0.67[Al0.05Mn0.95]O2. The reversible capacity of an EDTA-4Na/Na0.67[Al0.05Mn0.95]O2//hard carbon full-cell system increased to 152 mA h (g-oxide)−1 at the first discharge with a Coulombic efficiency of 89%, whereas the Na0.67[Al0.05Mn0.95]O2 without EDTA-4Na delivered a discharge capacity 51 mA h g–1 because of the small charge capacity. The EDTA-4Na sacrificed itself to generate Na+ ions via oxidative decomposition by releasing four sodium ions and producing C3N as a decomposition resultant on charge. It is thought that the slight increase in discharge capacity is associated with the electroconducting nature of the C3N deposits formed on the surface of the Na0.67[Al0.05Mn0.95]O2 electrode. We elucidated the reaction mechanism and sacrificial activity of EDTA-4Na, and our findings suggest that the addition of EDTA-4Na is beneficial as an additional source of Na+ ions that contribute to the charge capacity.

  • Experimental study of sidewall effect on flame characteristics of heptane pool fires with different aspect ratios and orientations in a channel
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Combustion Institute. - : Elsevier BV. - 1540-7489 .- 1873-2704. ; 36:2, s. 3121-3129
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A series of small scale tests was conducted to investigate the influence of sidewall on flame characteristics of heptane pool fires in a channel, considering pool shape (aspect ratio: 1, 2, 4 and 8) and pool orientation relative to sidewall. Distance between fire and sidewall was changed systematically. Both transverse flame development (along the direction of channel width) and longitudinal flame development (along the direction of channel length) were recorded by digital video. Results show that for a fixed fire location, the heat release rate increases with the increasing pool aspect ratio (namely a larger pool perimeter), which indicates more air entrainment and more intense combustion. In wall fire cases, when the long pool rim is perpendicular with channel sidewall, the flame can obtain more air entrainment with a weaker boundary restriction from the sidewall, compared to the case with the long pool rim being parallel with sidewall. Comparison of some previously established correlations based on various experimental conditions with our test results is made. Due to the fact without considering sidewall effect and fuel shape on the air entrainment of fire plume, the classic correlations need to be further improved. Therefore, an integral flame length model considering both sidewall effect and fuel shape is developed, which correlates well with all the data from cases with various pool positions, orientations and aspect ratios. © 2016 The Combustion Institute. • Operational performance of a novel heat pump assisted solar facade loop-heat-pipe water heating system
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Applied Energy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0306-2619 .- 1872-9118. ; 146, s. 371-382
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper aims to present an investigation into the operational performance of a novel heat pump assisted solar façade loop-heat-pipe (LHP) water heating system using both theoretical and experimental methods. This involved (1) development of a computer numerical model; (2) simulation of the operational performance of the system by using the model; (3) test rig construction; and (4) dedicated experiment for verification of the model. It was found that the established model is able to predict the operational performance of the system at a reasonable accuracy. Analyses of the research results indicated that under the selected testing conditions, the average thermal efficiency of the LHP module was around 71%, much higher than that of the loop heat pipe without heat pump assistance. The thermal efficiency of the LHP module grew when the heat pump was turned-on and fell when the heat pump was turned-off. The water temperature remained a steadily growing trend throughout the heat pump turned-on period. Neglecting the heat loss of the water tank, the highest coefficient of the performance could reach up to 6.14 and its average value was around 4.93. In overall, the system is a new façade integrated, highly efficient and aesthetically appealing solar water heating configuration; wide deployment of the system will help reduce fossil fuel consumption in the building sector and carbon emission to the environment.

  • Lung Cancer Risk in Never-Smokers of European Descent is Associated With Genetic Variation in the 5(p)15.33 TERT-CLPTM1Ll Region
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Thoracic Oncology. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE INC. - 1556-0864 .- 1556-1380. ; 14:8, s. 1360-1369
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: Inherited susceptibility to lung cancer risk in never-smokers is poorly understood. The major reason for this gap in knowledge is that this disease is relatively uncommon (except in Asians), making it difficult to assemble an adequate study sample. In this study we conducted a genome-wide association study on the largest, to date, set of European-descent never-smokers with lung cancer. Methods: We conducted a two-phase (discovery and replication) genome-wide association study in never-smokers of European descent. We further augmented the sample by performing a meta-analysis with never-smokers from the recent OncoArray study, which resulted in a total of 3636 cases and 6295 controls. We also compare our findings with those in smokers with lung cancer. Results: We detected three genome-wide statistically significant single nucleotide polymorphisms rs31490 (odds ratio [OR]: 0.769, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.722-0.820; p value 5.31 x 10(-16)), rs380286 (OR: 0.770, 95% CI: 0.723-0.820; p value 4.32 x 10(-16)), and rs4975616 OR: 0.778, 95% CI: 0.730-0.829; p value 1.04 x 10(-14)). All three mapped to Chromosome 5 CLPTM1L-TERT region, previously shown to be associated with lung cancer risk in smokers and in never-smoker Asian women, and risk of other cancers including breast, ovarian, colorectal, and prostate. Conclusions: We found that genetic susceptibility to lung cancer in never-smokers is associated to genetic variants with pan-cancer risk effects. The comparison with smokers shows that top variants previously shown to be associated with lung cancer risk only confer risk in the presence of tobacco exposure, underscoring the importance of gene-environment interactions in the etiology of this disease. • Development of multi-cellular human lung models to study inflammatory mechanisms and cell-cell interactions
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • It is well known that exposure to toxicants in the environment is associated with a wide range of health effects. The airway epithelium which forms the first line of defense, plays critical roles in the defence against inhaled particles, pathogens and toxic agents. Therefore, good and valid human airway models need to be developed to study pathophysiological mechanisms of pulmonary toxicity mediated by xenobiotics. In this thesis, unique systems which combine different human airway cell models (ex vivo and in vitro) and different exposure methods were developed. After exposure, inflammatory and oxidative stress responses, interaction between different cell types, as well as the roles of Toll-like receptors (TLR) were addressed. In Paper I, we found that TLR ligands increased the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines in alveolar macrophage (AMQ) from both healthy non-smokers and smokers with and without chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and this induction was attenuated by co-stimulation with glucocorticosteroids. Glucocorticosteroids alone or combined with TLR ligands upregulated the TLR2 expression in AMQ from smokers with and without COPD. Hence glucocorticosteroids both exert an anti-inflammatory effect by inhibiting the inflammatory response and improvement of the host defense response by increasing the TLR2 expression. This may be a contributing mechanism for the positive effect of glucocorticosteroids in the treatment of acute exacerbation caused by microorganisms in COPD. In Paper II-III, we succeeded in establishing human bronchial epithelial models (primary bronchial epithelial cell cultured at air-liquid interface (PBEC-ALI) with/without fibroblasts). In Paper IV, we built multi-cellular human bronchial models (PBEC-ALI co-cultured with macrophages (MQ); PBEC-ALI/MQ). After airlifting, the bronchial epithelial cells differentiated into ciliated cells, basal cells, mucus producing cells, and Club (Clara) cells which all are cell types present bronchial epithelium in vivo. Interleukin 13 (IL-13) induces mucus producing cell metaplasia and hyperplasia and was used to build up chronic bronchitis-like models including an increased number of mucus-producing cells. By combining these models with a controlled aerosol exposure system (XposeALI), we developed an in vitro testing strategy to mimic in vivo conditions, a strategy which substantially reduces the need for animal models. In Paper II and III, we demonstrated that the induced inflammatory and oxidative stress responses and altered tissue injury/repair might be responsible for palladium/carbon nanoparticle mediated pulmonary toxicity. In addition, by comparison of inflammatory and oxidative stress response between normal and chronic bronchitis-like models, we found the latter to be more sensitive to particles exposure than the normal models. These results indicated that a pre-existing condition like chronic bronchitis, might lead to an increased risk of nanoparticle mediated health effect indicating an enhanced susceptibility to air pollution exposure in individuals with chronic lung disease compared with healthy subjects. In Paper IV, we showed that diesel exhaust particles, in PBEC-ALI models, induced inflammatory and oxidative stress responses that were attenuated in the presence of MQ. In PBEC-ALI/MQ, diesel exhaust particle exposure increased the mRNA expression of M2-MQ markers which was not observed in mono-cultures (PBEC-ALI or MQ). These findings indicate that the cross-talk between epithelial cells and MQ, together with particle exposure can drive MQ polarization towards M2-subtype. Therefore, interactions between PBEC and MQ play an important role in resolution of the inflammatory response upon particle exposure. Taken together, this thesis indicates the role of TLR mediated inflammatory response and oxidative signaling pathway as well as cell-cell interactions after exposure to various toxic components on different lung cell models related to COPD and chronic bronchitis.

  • Experimental study of non-monotonous sidewall effect on flame characteristics and burning rate of n-heptane pool fires
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Fuel. - : Elsevier BV. - 0016-2361 .- 1873-7153. ; 145, s. 228-233
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To study the influence of sidewall effect on flame characteristics and burning rate, a series of experiments with heptane pools was conducted. The results showed that as the fires were placed close to the sidewall, the flames inclined to the sidewall due to the restriction on air entrainment, and the burning rate increased on the whole, which could be mainly due to the enhanced radiation from the heated sidewall and ceiling flame. However, regardless of fuel pool shape, the burning rate obtained the peak value when the fire was near the sidewall, rather than attached to the sidewall, resulting from less flame radiation from the vertical flame part to the fuel in the latter case. The ratio of longitudinal ceiling flame length to transverse length tended to decrease with the fire moving close to the sidewall. For cases with the largest length and wall fires, the ratio was nearly 0.5, which could be explained according to the theory of mirror effect. Also, due to the non-monotonous sidewall effect, a higher burning rate did not necessarily lead to a larger ceiling flame length.
