  • Quantification of abdominal fat accumulation during hyperalimentation using MRI
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the ISMRM Annual Meeting (ISMRM'09), 2009. - Berkeley, CA, USA : International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine. ; , s. 206-
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • There is an increasing demand for imaging methods that can be used for automatic, accurate and quantitative determination of the amounts of abdominal fat. Such methods are important as they will allow the evaluation of some of the risk factors underlying the ’metabolic syndrome’. The metabolic syndrome is becoming common in large parts of the world, and it appears that a dominant risk factor for developing this syndrome is abdominal obesity. Subjects that are afflicted with the metabolic syndrome are exposed to a high risk for developing a large range of diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiac failure, and stroke. The aim of this work

  • Brain-scale simulation of the neocortex on the IBM Blue Gene/L  supercomputer
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: IBM Journal of Research and Development. - : IBM. - 0018-8646 .- 2151-8556. ; 52:1-2, s. 31-41
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Biologically detailed large-scale models of the brain can now be simulated thanks to increasingly powerful massively parallel supercomputers. We present an overview, for the general technical reader, of a neuronal network model of layers II/III of the neocortex built with biophysical model neurons. These simulations, carried out on an IBM Blue Gene/Le supercomputer, comprise up to 22 million neurons and 11 billion synapses, which makes them the largest simulations of this type ever performed. Such model sizes correspond to the cortex of a small mammal. The SPLIT library, used for these simulations, runs on single-processor as well as massively parallel machines. Performance measurements show good scaling behavior on the Blue Gene/L supercomputer up to 8,192 processors. Several key phenomena seen in the living brain appear as emergent phenomena in the simulations. We discuss the role of this kind of model in neuroscience and note that full-scale models may be necessary to preserve natural dynamics. We also discuss the need for software tools for the specification of models as well as for analysis and visualization of output data. Combining models that range from abstract connectionist type to biophysically detailed will help us unravel the basic principles underlying neocortical function.

  • Acoustic time histories from vibrating surfaces of a diesel engine
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Applied Acoustics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0003-682X .- 1872-910X. ; 67:3, s. 230-248
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An experiment on a diesel engine provides for validation of a method that retrieves source strength spectra, source strength time histories and sound pressure time histories of the engine's complex partial sources. The method is based on empirical transfer function measurements and inverse matrix calculations briefly described in the article. Different simplifying source models were selected by comparison of calculated and measured auto spectra. The results show: (1) indication of time efficient measurements of source strength spectra, (2) the importance of correct source models in the case of separated source strength time histories, and (3) spectra of separated sound pressure time histories. Listening tests reported that it is possible to detect well differentiated sounds of the partial sources as a result of the method.

  • What makes it slow? A questionnaire survey of environmental attitudes, management and performance
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: 4th Nordic Conference on Construction Economics and Organisation, 14th-15th June 2007, Luleå, Sweden.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over the last two decades the Swedish building industry has made much effort to develop green building practices. Researchers within the field have provided theoretical knowledge on how to design green buildings and analytical environmental management tools have been developed to guide practitioners. Information campaigns have raised the general environmental awareness among building practitioners. In spite of these efforts, mainstream building practices do not seem to have undergone any marked changes. This raises the question of how environmental issues actually are dealt with in the building industry. Has the development stagnated and, if so, why? What causes green innovation inertia in the Swedish building industry? What makes it slow? This paper provides some answers to these questions by empirically examining environmental attitudes, management and performance in the industry. The paper is based on a structured questionnaire survey directed to environmental managers at all companies in Sweden with at least 50 employees within technical consultants, building constructors, and property owners and managers and companies with at least 20 employees within architecture. The response rate was 45.4% which corresponds to 246 respondents. The study detects possible causes to deficiencies and creates larger understanding as to why the development, despite much effort, sometimes does not go in the direction as intended by top management. Focusing on relations between the definition of environmental challenge, measures adopted and results from measures, the paper identifies trends and institutionalising processes that hinder sustainable development within the building industry.

  • The societal cost of alcohol consumption: an estimation of the economic and human cost including health effects in Sweden, 2002
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Health Economics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1618-7601 .- 1618-7598. ; 9:4, s. 351-360
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article estimates the societal cost of alcohol consumption in Sweden in 2002, as well as the effects on health and quality of life. The estimation includes direct costs, indirect costs and intangible costs. Relevant cost-of-illness methods are applied using the human capital method and prevalence-based estimates, as suggested in existing international guidelines, allowing cautious comparison with prior studies. The results show that the net cost (i.e. including protective effects of alcohol consumption) is 20.3 billion Swedish kronor (SEK) and the gross cost (counting only detrimental effects) is 29.4 billon (0.9 and 1.3% of GDP). Alcohol consumption is estimated to cause a net loss of 121,800 QALYs. The results are within the range found in prior studies, although at the low end. A large number of sensitivity analyses are performed, indicating a sensitivity range of 50%.

  • Clustering of stored memories in an attractor network with local competition
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Neural Systems. - 0129-0657 .- 1793-6462. ; 16:6, s. 393-403
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we study an attractor network with units that compete locally for activation and we prove that a reduced version of it has fixpoint dynamics. An analysis, complemented by simulation experiments, of the local characteristics of the network's attractors with respect to a parameter controlling the intensity of the local competition is performed. We find that the attractors are hierarchically clustered when the parameter of the local competition is changed
