  • Redsigning Mature Products for Substainability
  • 2006
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This contribution will discuss engineering design projects with various environmental and sustainable objectives. The automotive industry is facing a major vicissitude regarding the system layouts of their products. Given the rapidly increasing demands for environmentally acceptable and sustainable vehicles, developed even faster and under increasing competition, one could expect a future, or a period of transition, where a “market pull”-situation will exact design methods more adapted for new propulsion technologies such as fuel cells, bio-fuels, hybrid configurations and so forth. When looking at two-wheeled vehicles it is also a matter of a dramatic change in the safety requirements that would affect the design process in a similar way. This paper presents studies made regarding development of two-wheeled vehicles with strict safety, environmental and sustainability requirements. It also describes what happens when a very mature product, such as a conventional motorcycle, undergoes dramatic changes in propulsion system and safety features and becomes technically immature, but still has to preserve its traditional values in the eyes of the consumer. Over the last two years, the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Linköping University has conducted various projects dealing with these issues using rapid, low-cost, demonstrator development together with digital models. The demonstrator is used as a vehicle to evaluate the integration of technology, as well as less tangible aspects such as ergonomics, drivability, appeal, visual impression etc. This approach has proven particularly fruitful when dealing with new technologies with a high level of innovation. The rapid nature of these projects also makes them suitable for exploring digital collaboration tools aimed at controlling and speeding up the design process.

  • Homocysteine levels in patients with Alzheimer's disease are influenced by the glutathione s-transferase omega-1 (GSTO1) gene
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Haematologica Reports. - 1824-9337. ; 2005:1(3):June
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Background: A substantial body of literature confirms an association between elevated blood levels of homocysteine and cognitive dysfunction, including Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Oxidative stress is a risk factor for AD. Elevated homocysteine levels might partially reflect redox status; its remethylation to methionine is coordinated by the redox-sensitive enzyme methionine synthase. Glutathione S-transferase omega-1 (GSTO1) is protective against oxidative stress, and the polymorphism Ala140Asp modifies the age-of-onset of AD. Aim: To investigate whether the GSTO1 Ala140Asp polymorphism is related to homocysteine levels in AD patients. Methods: Plasma homocysteine levels and the GSTO1 polymorphism Ala140Asp were analysed in 244 consecutive patients with clinically diagnosed AD. Results: Homocysteine levels differed significantly between the three genotypes (p=0.002) analysis of variance, Durbin-Watson D Statistic. The levels were 11.8±3.6 µmol/L in patients with the Ala/Ala genotype (n=118), 13.5±5.0 µmol/L in the Ala/Asp group (n=105), and 14.1±6.0 µmol/L in patients with the Asp/Asp genotype (n=21). Carriers of at least one Asp allele showed significantly higher plasma homocysteine levels compared to non-carriers (p=0.002) two-sample t-test. Conclusion: The association between homocysteine levels and this GSTO1 polymorphism supports the suggestion that increased homocysteine in AD patients may be a consequence of oxidative stress.

  • Discrete Event Simulation with Lifecycle Assessment Data at a Juice Manufacturing System
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: 2008 5th International Conference on Simulation and Modelling in the Food and Bio-Industry, FOODSIM 2008; Dublin; Ireland; 26 June 2008 through 28 June 2008. ; , s. 165-169
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to measure and evaluate productivity and environmental parameters simultaneously and in consideration to each other, they need to be presented on the same basis and put up on the same table, at the same time. Otherwise, while considering only parts of the relevant parameters at a time, there is a great risk for sub-optimisation. The study presented in this paper shows one way of putting productivity parameters such as batch size, batch frequency, production planning, and resource management on the same table as environmental parameters such as emissions, waste and energy consumption. This is done through the use of lifecycle assessment in combination with discrete event simulation. The result gives an example of a sound basis for decision-making when changes are to be made in the juice production system at hand. The presented case study gives information on energy consumption, waste and pollutants such as CO2, NOx, SO2, and ethene generated from production of juice. Results show that some changes of the system improves both environment and productivity, others improves one and worsens the other!

  • From Victim Diaspora to Transborder Citizenship? : Diaspora formation and transnational relations among Kurds in France and Sweden
  • 2008
