  • What is dignity in prehospital emergency care?
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Nursing Ethics. - : Sage Publications. - 0969-7330 .- 1477-0989. ; 24:3, s. 268-278
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Ethics and dignity in prehospital emergency care are important due to vulnerability and suffering. Patients can lose control of their body and encounter unfamiliar faces in an emergency situation.OBJECTIVE: To describe what specialist ambulance nurse students experienced as preserved and humiliated dignity in prehospital emergency care.RESEARCH DESIGN: The study had a qualitative approach.METHOD: Data were collected by Flanagan's critical incident technique. The participants were 26 specialist ambulance nurse students who described two critical incidents of preserved and humiliated dignity, from prehospital emergency care. Data consist of 52 critical incidents and were analyzed with interpretive content analysis.ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS: The study followed the ethical principles in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki.FINDINGS: The result showed how human dignity in prehospital emergency care can be preserved by the ambulance nurse being there for the patient. The ambulance nurses meet the patient in the patient's world and make professional decisions. The ambulance nurse respects the patient's will and protects the patient's body from the gaze of others. Humiliated dignity was described through the ambulance nurse abandoning the patient and by healthcare professionals failing, disrespecting, and ignoring the patient.DISCUSSION: It is a unique situation when a nurse meets a patient face to face in a critical life or death moment. The discussion describes courage and the ethical vision to see another human.CONCLUSION: Dignity was preserved when the ambulance nurse showed respect and protected the patient in prehospital emergency care. The ambulance nurse students' ethical obligation results in the courage to see when a patient's dignity is in jeopardy of being humiliated. Humiliated dignity occurs when patients are ignored and left unprotected. This ethical dilemma affects the ambulance nurse students badly due to the fact that the morals and attitudes of ambulance nurses are reflected in their actions toward the patient.

  • Appraisal of potential for teaching
  • 2007
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The purpose is to understand and to some extent develop some aspects of appraisal potential for teaching. A pedagogical analyze is provided some important determinants in Teacher Education in Sweden. One determinant in focus is how we can identify, describe and analyze group processes and analyze their impact in teacher education in terms of teacher students and teacher educators' awareness and responsibility in the process of appraisal of potential for teaching are in focus. Another determinant is concerning the incorporation of student teachers, practitioners and teacher educators in the involvement of the body of potential for teaching in terms of inclusive education- teachers' pedagogical thinking. The third determinant is dealing with how student teachers and practitioners conceive and describe special needs in comprehensive school and the concept of special education in teacher education. Questions of interest are:- How student teachers are provided the opportunity to increase self awareness through reflection and critical questioning and also how this project can contribute to improvement of self awareness in teacher education?- How can we provide good examples of potential for teaching and teacher competence with focus on involvement, communication and cooperation? - To what extent are the existing teacher educational systems adapted for development of potential of teaching?- Implementation and development of potential for teaching is provided through describing and analyzing development of personal skills- The process within the seminars - Individual plans in appraisal for the potential of teaching - The appraisal of knowledge about teaching and learning processes in terms of inclusive education In Sweden the government describes the qualifications of teacher competence in terms in terms of cognitive, cultural, communicative, creative, critical, social and didactic competence. Above work supports the notion of the complexity of conducting teacher education in a fast changing multicultural society. The creation of generated collectively reviewed teacher education and the notions of the role of Institutions in building adaptive capacity and supporting collective rational are an important question in this workshop

  • A Novel Layer Jamming Mechanism with Tunable Stiffness Capability for Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on robotics. - Piscataway, N.J. : IEEE Press. - 1552-3098 .- 1941-0468. ; 29:4, s. 1031-1042
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a novel “layer jamming” mechanism that can achieve variable stiffness. The layer jamming mechanism exploits the friction present between layers of thin material, which can be controlled by a confining pressure. Due to the mechanism's hollow geometry, compact size, and light weight, it is well suited for various minimally invasive surgery applications, where stiffness change is required. This paper describes the concept, the mathematical model, and a tubular snake-like manipulator prototype. Various characteristics of layer jamming, such as stiffness and yield strength, are studied both theoretically and experimentally. © IEEE

  • Zinecraft : zines as methodology and precursor to Swedish Games
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nordic DiGRA 2023 Abstracts.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Zines are small-circulation magazines that the creators make themselves with simple means. They are often part of underground and emerging communities, and have been an integral part of creative industries. In a study conducted by Austin in 2022, it was found that much of the success of Sweden’s creative industries comes from investment as well as progressive maternity and paternity leave (Austin 2022b). However, the study also revealed a seldom studied element of success in Sweden’s creative industries: the emphasis on creativity, comics, zines and games as part of Swedish culture. This study utilized a zine made during the research collection as a companion to the report (Austin 2022a). We argue that zine creation alongside research makes for more personal and related outputs and that this can be applied not only to academics, but also the games industry. In this paper, we give a background to the importance of zines in Sweden’s creative industry, and how the practice is integral to game making both past and present. Further, we expand on how zines can be embraced as tools for interdisciplinary research, and as a companion output for both academics and industry professionals.

  • Urinary incontinence in nulliparous women before and during pregnancy: prevalence, incidence, type, and risk factors.
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International urogynecology journal. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1433-3023 .- 0937-3462. ; 29:3, s. 353-362
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While many women report urinary incontinence (UI) during pregnancy, associations with pre-pregnancy urinary leakage remain under-explained.We performed a multi-strand prospective cohort study with 860 nulliparous women recruited during pregnancy.Prevalence of any urinary leakagewas 34.8% before and 38.7% during pregnancy.Prevalence of UI,leaking urine at least once per month, was 7.2% and 17.7% respectively. Mixed urinary incontinence (MUI) was reported by 59.7% of women before and 58.8% during pregnancy, stress urinary incontinence (SUI) by 22.6% and 37.2%, and urge urinary incontinence (UUI) by 17.7% and 4.0%, respectively. SUI accounted for half (50.0%), MUI for less than half (44.2%), and UUI for 5.8% of new-onset UI in pregnancy. Pre-pregnancy UI was significantly associated with childhood enuresis [adjusted odds ratio (AOR) 2.9, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.5-5.6, p=0.001) and a body mass index (BMI) ≥30kg/m2 (AOR 4.2, 95% CI 1.9-9.4, p<0.001). Women aged ≥35years (AOR 2.8, 95% CI 1.4-5.9, p=0.005), women whose pre-pregnancy BMI was 25-29.99kg/m2 (AOR 2.0, 95% CI 1.2-3.5, p=0.01), and women who leaked urine less than once per month (AOR 2.6, 95% CI 1.6-4.1, p<0.005) were significantly more likely to report new-onset UI in pregnancy.Considerable proportions of nulliparous women leak urine before and during pregnancy, and most ignore symptoms. Healthcare professionals have several opportunities for promoting continence in all pregnant women, particularly in women with identifiable risk factors. If enquiry about UI, and offering advice on effective preventative and curative treatments, became routine in clinical practice, it is likely that some of these women could become or stay continent.

  • Treating comorbid insomnia in patients enrolled in therapist-assisted transdiagnostic internet-delivered cognitive behaviour therapy for anxiety and depression : A randomized controlled trial
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Internet Interventions. - : Elsevier. - 2214-7829. ; 35
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Transdiagnostic Internet-delivered cognitive behaviour therapy (ICBT) for patients experiencing anxiety and depression can produce large improvements in symptoms. Comorbid insomnia is common among individuals seeking treatment for anxiety and depression, yet transdiagnostic ICBT rarely targets insomnia and many ICBT patients report that symptoms of insomnia remain after treatment. This trial explored the impact of including a brief intervention for insomnia alongside an existing transdiagnostic ICBT course that included brief weekly therapist assistance. Patients were randomly assigned to receive either the Standard transdiagnostic (n = 75) or a Sleep-Enhanced course (n = 142), which included information on sleep restriction and stimulus control. Intentto-treat analyses using generalized estimating equation (GEE) showed significant, large reductions in all primary outcomes (insomnia: d = 0.96, 95 % CI [0.68, 1.24]; depression: d = 1.04, 95 % CI [0.76, 1.33]; and anxiety: d = 1.23, 95 % CI [0.94, 1.52]) from pre-treatment to post-treatment, with changes maintained at 3-months. Patients assigned to the Sleep-Enhanced course reported larger reductions in insomnia than patients in the Standard transdiagnostic course (Cohen's d = 0.31, 95 % CI [0.034, 0.60]) at post-treatment but no significant betweengroup differences in any of the primary outcomes were found at follow-up. Patient-reported adherence to sleep restriction guidelines (p = .03), but not stimulus control instructions (p = .84) was associated with greater reductions in insomnia symptoms during the course. Overall, patients who received the Sleep-Enhanced course were satisfied with the materials and most patients reported making sleep behaviour changes. The trial results demonstrate that including a brief intervention targeting insomnia can be beneficial for many patients who enroll in ICBT primarily for symptoms related to anxiety and depression.
