  • Beyond Egocentric Judgments of Fairness: Advantageous, Disadvantageous, and Third-Party Inequality Aversion
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Paper presented at the 25th annual conference on Judgement and Decision Making (Society for Judgment and Decision Making), Minneapolis.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent models of economic fairness assume that at least some people are motivated to reduce economic differences between themselves and other individuals. In addition to this motive, this paper investigates whether people care also about differences between third parties. An experiment is conducted where individuals make tradeoffs between (i) own payoff and differences in payoffs versus two other subjects, and (ii) own payoff and differences in payoffs between these two subjects. The results indicate that both these types of inequalities have an adverse impact on participants choices, suggesting that a concern for fairness extends beyond egocentric comparisons of economic distributions

  • Displaying Concern for Fairness without Genuine Intentions of Being Fair: Outcome Uncertainty and Moral Licensing of Selfish Payoff Allocations
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Paper presented at the 25th annual conference on Judgement and Decision Making (Society for Judgment and Decision Making), Minneapolis..
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two experiments are conducted to test the hypothesis that fair-minded behavior depends on the established link between an individuals actions and the consequences for others. The results indicate that the aversion toward advantageous and third-party inequality become less pronounced when the disfavored person is not solely determined by the choice of the decision maker. Despite implying an identical economic distribution of payoffs, the introduction of a random event seem to diffuse the personal responsibility for outcomes, thus leading to a moral licensing of selfish behavior. It follows that people may not be as altruistic or unselfish as many recent experimental findings suggest
