- A BCR/ABL-negative chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) with t(12;14) (p12;q11-13) as the sole chromosomal abnormality was investigated by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), which disclosed a cryptic insertion of ETV6 (previously called TEL), located at 12p12, into ABL at chromosome band 9q34. ETV6/ABL fusion was confirmed by RT-PCR, revealing that the first five exons of ETV6 were fused in frame with ABL at exon 2. Wild-type ETV6 was expressed, in accordance with the FISH results showing no deletion of the second ETV6 allele. ETV6/ABL chimeric transcripts have previously been reported in acute leukemias, but never before in CML. The present case suggests that ETV6/ABL positivity may constitute a new genetic subgroup of BCR-negative CML.

89 % män — Vem skriver kurslitteraturen?

- Pratet om jämställdhet har pågått länge inom universitetsvärlden liksom isamhället i övrigt. Det är dock långt kvar innan jämställdhetsmålen harnåtts. Exempelvis är ännu bara 4 procent av professorerna kvinnor. Även andelen kvinnor som avlägger doktorsexamen och därefter fortsätter forska är liten. I denna rapport behandlas könsfördelningen av författare till kurslitteratur vid svenska universitet och högskolor. Motivet är att kvinnliga författare är viktiga som förebilder, men också att de kan antas ge en annan bild av olika företeelser än män. Studiens resultat visar att kurslitteraturen till 89 procent är skriven av män. Denna snedfördelning diskuteras utifrån huruvida författarens kön spelar någon roll. Avslutningsvis redovisas ett antal möjliga åtgärder. Rapporten är tankeväckande och kan förhoppningsvis ligga till grund för vidare diskussioner – och handlande – i jämställdhetsfrågor.

Fetal neocortical grafts placed in brain infarcts do not improve paw-reaching deficits in adult spontaneously hypertensive rats

- The aim was to study if neural grafts placed brain infarcts could improve functional recovery. The middle cerebral artery was occluded (MCAO) in 19 spontaneously hypertensive rats. Nine rats were sham operated. Twelve to 16 days after the ischemic insult, 9 of the MCAO rats received transplants of dissociated fetal neocortical tissue (MCAO-T) and 1, 3 and 6 months after transplantation surgery, the rats were behaviorally evaluated by a test for forelimb function. Infarct and transplant sizes were measured morphometrically. The remaining volume of the infarcted hemisphere was 66 +/- 7% (mean +/- SD) in the MCAO group and 71 +/- 9% in the MCAO-T group of the non-operated hemisphere. All grafted rats had surviving transplants. Contralateral to the lesion, paw-reaching was highly impaired in both infarcted groups compared with sham-operated controls with no significant difference between MCAO and MCAO-T. The lesion size correlated significantly with contralateral paw-reach performance at all test periods. We conclude that neocortical grafts did not alleviate the impaired forepaw function.

- The present study examines the capacity of fetal neocortical grafts placed in a brain infarct to exchange axonal projections with the host brain. Five to 7 days after a middle cerebral artery occlusion in adult spontaneously hypertensive rats, dissociated neocortical primordium from fetuses of gestational age 15-16 days was implanted into the infarcted area. Four to 11 months later, the neural tracers Phaseolus vulgaris-leucoagglutinin and Fluoro-Gold were injected in the grafts and host neocortex. An extensive axonal network was present in the transplants but only one of eight rats with appropriate placed injections displayed efferent connections from transplant to host. The sparse axonal outgrowth indicates major limitations for fetal rat cortical grafts to form connections with host neural circuitries after an ischemic insult.

- Different triarylamine derivatives have successfully been used as solid hole-conductor materials in dye-sensitized solar cells with efficiencies up to 4% [1-3]. In the present work TiO2/dye/ hole-conductor heterojunctions is assembled to form model systems for solid state DSSC and the interfacial structure at the molecular level. A series of triarylamine molecules is used to investigate the influence of small differences in the hole-conductor material structure on the photovoltaic and molecular surface properties. Both solid state and liquid state junctions with the triarylamine molecules were investigated. In the solid state heterojunctions the hole-conductor molecules were evaporated on the substrate and in the liquid state heterojunctions the hole-conductor molecules were solvated in an organic solvent. The photovoltaic properties of the heterojunction largely depend on the electron transfer rates at the interfaces between the different materials (semiconductor, dye and hole-conductor). Photoelectron Spectroscopy (PES) measurements was used to investigate the molecular and electronic interface structure. In the figure below the valence electronic structure of interfaces with the different hole-conductors are shown.From the valence PES the interaction and the energy level matching between the dyes and the hole-conductors is studied. The results show large differences in the energy matching of the different holconducting materials with respect to the dye molecules partly explaining the differences in efficiency. The valence structure also shows that when combining different materials their individual properties adjust slightly to their new environment. From the core level PES we observe differences molecular surface structure. Specifically it was found that the smaller holecondctors are able to penetrate the dye layer and contact the TiO2 surface.
