- The status of the search for NN-decoupled resonances in the πNN-system is reviewed. After a short survey on the history of dibaryon searches reactions suitable for detecting such resonances are discussed. Special emphasis is put on the pionic double charge exchange, where recently evidence for the signature of a narrow πNN resonance, called d′, with I(J P) = even (0 -) and m = 2.06 GeV has been quoted. Further reactions discussed in this context are the pion photoproduction on the deuteron and the two-pion production in nucleon-nucleon collisions.

- BACKGROUND: Patients with severe acute lung injury (ALI) have been treated compassionately on doctors' initiative with inhaled nitric oxide (INO) in Sweden and Norway since 1991. In 1994 the previously used technical grade nitric oxide was replaced by medical grade nitric oxide. METHODS: We have carried out a retrospective data collection on all identified adult patients treated with INO for >4 h during the period 1991-1994 focusing on safety aspects and patient outcome. We used the following exclusion criteria (1) Age <18 years, (2) Simultaneous treatment with extracorporeal removal of CO2 (3) NO inhalation period <4 h, (4) Incomplete or missing patient charts, (5) Use of INO in order to treat pulmonary hypertension following cardiac surgery, with little or no acute lung injury. RESULTS: Inclusion criteria were met by 56 out of 73 identified patients. Mean age was 48+/-19 years and the median duration of INO treatment was 102 h. PaO2/FIO2 ratio at start of treatment was 85 +/- 33 mm Hg with a lung injury score (LIS) of 3.2+/-0.8. The aetiology of the lung injury was pneumonia (n= 27), sepsis (n=12) and trauma (n=8). Survival to hospital discharge was 41% and survival after 180 d was 38%. Three serious adverse events were identified, two from technical failures of the INO delivery device and one withdrawal reaction necessitating slow weaning from INO. No methaemoglobin values >5% were reported during treatment. CONCLUSION: The overall mortality did not differ dramatically from historical controls with high mortality. Only a randomised study may determine whether INO as an adjunct to treatment alters the outcome in severe ALI. One cannot at present advocate the routine use of INO in patients with ALI outside such studies.

The pp → ppπ0 reaction near the kinematical threshold

- The reaction pp → ppπ0 has been measured using electron-cooled protons incident on an internal gas-jet target at seven different incident beam energies, from 280.7 MeV (1 MeV above the reaction threshold) up to 310.2 MeV. The pions were measured by their decay photons. In the overlapping energy region, the measured total cross sections agree with those measured in a recent Indiana experiment. The angular distributions are consistent with a 3P0 → 1S0S0 transition in the full energy range studied. The kinematical distributions are well described when taking into account the final state and the Coulomb interactions.

- A detector setup for the cooler storage ring CELSIUS is described. The setup detects particles produced in interactions between the internal beam and a cluster-jet target. Particles emitted in the forward direction are measured by means of arrays of plastic scintillators and proportional counters. Particles, particularly photons, emitted more isotropically are measured by means of two calorimeters containing CsI(Na) crystals. The performance of the setup is given for neutral meson production in proton-proton and proton-deuteron interactions in the energy range 290-1360 MeV.

Deuteron breakup by 1.15 GeV protons and excitation of the Δ isobar

- The pd→npp reaction has been measured using circulating 1.15 GeV protons, a gas jet target and scintillation detectors selecting scattered protons with energy above 30 MeV. The distribution of the two-proton invariant mass has a maximum at 2.13 ± 0.01 GeV/c2 and a width of 130 ± 10 MeV/c2 (FWHM). We see no evidence of narrow (Γ < 30 MeV/c2) peaks in the phase-space region selected. The mass of X, excited in the pN→nX elementary process, is 40 MeV/c2 smaller than the mass of a real Δ isobar.
