  • Fiberbanks as substrate and feedstock for biological remediation : A practical analytical method development for organic pollutants analysis
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Book of Abstracts. - : ABA Publishing. - 9789189081031
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fiberbanksfrom the pulp and paper industry are typically contaminated with a wide range ofchlorinated aromatic and aliphatic toxins such as HCB and other chlorinated benzenes, PCB,HCH, DDT, PCDD, PCDF and Chlorophenols. This poses a formidable challenge for theanalyst to develop appropriate analytical methodology for the monitoring of the progress ofremediation. In preparation to this undertaking, an examination of a practical analytical method using oneextraction method, one clean-up and one analysis method for the aforementioned targetcompounds found in the fibrous sediment. This method was performed using acceleratedsolvent extraction (ASE), a modified silica gel column and GC-FID/ECD. Additionally,an assessment of the levels of organic pollutants was conducted, with the purposeofmeasuringthe potential alteration in contaminantswhenfreeze-drying, air-drying andautoclavingpretreatments are applied to the sediment samples, prior to be used as a media forbiological remediation. The results showed that the ASE is a very fast and reliable method of extraction, with yieldscomparableorhigher than the reference Soxhlet extraction method. Theactivatedsilica gelcolumn demonstrated adequate purification of the sediment extract for analysisusingthe twodetectors, FID and ECD, whichwere able to identify the target analytes fromonlyone purifiedextract. The method employed in this study has the potentialto reduceboth processing timeand materialusedfor analytical sample preparation. Lastly, some modifications inconcentrations anddistribution of target analyteswere revealedin thesediments pre-treated byautoclave and air-driedwhencompared withthefreeze-dried sediments, which can helpunderstanding the development of the biological remediation process.

  • Exploring reasons to attend formal teaching sessions among students: A self-determination theory perspective
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Högre Utbildning. - : Cappelen Damm AS - Cappelen Damm Akademisk. - 2000-7558. ; 11:2, s. 70-83
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Among students in higher education, attending formal teaching sessions might be important not only for academic achievement but also to foster human values. Despite this, the low and declining attendance rate is a growing concern in higher education. This study aimed to explore what students believe teachers could do to facilitate attendance at formal teaching sessions in the physical education part of the teacher education program in Sweden. Three focus group interviews were conducted among students aged 20 to 35 who attended the teacher education programme. The self-determination theory was used as a theoretical framework, and data were analysed and categorised using qualitative content analysis. The analysis of the interviews formed an overarching theme that intersected with four categories. The results show that teachers might facilitate attendance during formal teaching sessions by providing opportunities for students to interact with each other; match challenges with skills; be engaged, enthusiastic, and caring; and outline the value and rationale. The study’s implications for teachers are discussed in the paper.

  • Engaging in Societal Collaboration Through Reflexivity : Experiences from a Cross-Disciplinary Pilot Course for Faculty
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Making Universities Matter : Collaboration, Engagement. Impact - Collaboration, Engagement. Impact. - Cham : Springer. - 2197-5698 .- 2197-5701. - 9783031487996 - 9783031487989 ; , s. 11-32
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is limited understanding of how education initiatives geared toward faculty and support staff can foster a capacity for long-term and integrated societal engagement and collaboration within higher education institutions. Using the experiences from a cross-disciplinary pilot course in Sweden, the current study aims to identify features that explicate how skills and academic rigor for engaging in societal collaboration can be developed toward a “reflexive scholarship of societal collaboration.” Based on a case study of the course, we identify the need for (i) theoretical orientation, (ii) collective reflections among diverse participants, and (iii) application of gained knowledge in real-world contexts. Building on the experiences from the pilot course, we explore and discuss the participants’ reflections on how their partaking in the course may support a reflexive scholarship of societal collaboration. Our study is relevant to managers and policymakers interested in nurturing long-term and integrated collaborations between academia and various societal actors.

  • “A roller coaster, both emotionally and work-wise…” : teachers in Swedish certified sport-oriented upper secondary schools experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: European Journal for Sport and Society. - Abingdon : Taylor & Francis. - 1613-8171.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study aimed to explore how teachers at certified sports-oriented upper secondary schools (CSUSS) in Sweden experienced how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted their everyday practice and well-being. Individual in-depth interviews were conducted with 13 teachers (mean age: 44 years) from three CSUSS in southern Sweden. The interviews were analysed using abductive qualitativecontent analysis. The analysis resulted in one overreaching theme, ‘Making sense of changes in everyday practice and dealing with a changing world’, illuminating how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted teachers. The teachers described the first lockdown as an initial shock that brought about changes in their workload and daily routines. The second lockdown was generally easier to handle, but they spent more time on planning and preparations, and had a greater focus on conveying theoretical knowledge and physicaltraining. Throughout the pandemic, they experienced a lack of social interactions; nonetheless, supportive colleagues and schools provided some relief. The teachers also experienced uncertainty regarding constantly changing restrictions; they learned, however, the importance of being flexible and creative in coping with these changes. Thus, the COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted their everyday practice and well-being. © 2024 The Author(s). Published by Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

  • Changes in amotivation, external regulation, and intrinsic regulation predicted dropout from youth soccer during the COVID-19 pandemic
  • 2023
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Regular sport participation is essential for youths physical, mental, and social health. Research shows, however, that sports participation peaks at around 10-14 years of age before declining through adolescence. Soccer, which is the most popular youth sport in Sweden, is no exception to dropout problems during adolescence. Purpose of the study: The purpose was to examine longitudinal changes in youth soccer players motivational regulations during the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic in Sweden, and how longitudinal changes in motivational regulations predicts dropout from youth soccer. Methods: Self-reported data was collected from 325 youth soccer players between 11 and 17 years of age (M = 13.08) at the beginning of the season in 2019 (TI) and 2020 (T2) and dropout data was reported by the coaches at the end of the season in 2021 (T3). Latent change score analyses, using Bayesian estimator, was used to examine change in the players motivational regulations.  Findings: There was a credible increase in amotivation (β = 0.14) and a credible decrease in identified regulation (β = -0.41) between T1 and T2. Changes in amotivation (β = 0.16), external regulation (β = 0.14), and intrinsic regulation (β = -0.15) between T1 and T2 were credible predictors of dropout from soccer at T3. Conclusion: To reduce the risk of dropout from youth soccer, during an ongoing pandemic, it is important to mitigate increases in amotivation and external regulation and to facilitate intrinsic motivation.

  • Possibilities and Challenges in Developing and Implementing an Empowerment-based School-Intervention in a Swedish Disadvantaged Community
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Health Promotion International. - Oxford : Oxford University Press. - 0957-4824 .- 1460-2245. ; 35:2, s. 232-243
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we describe and critically reflect on the possibilities and challenges of developing and implementing an empowerment-based school intervention regarding healthy food and physical activity (PA), involving participants from a Swedish multicultural area characterized by low socioeconomic status. The 2-year intervention was continually developed and implemented, as a result of cooperation and shared decision making among researchers and the participants. All 54 participants were seventh graders, and the intervention comprised health coaching, health promotion sessions and a Facebook group. We experienced that participants valued collaborating with peers, and that they took responsibility in codeveloping and implementing the intervention. Participants expressed feeling listened to, being treated with respect and taken seriously. However, we also experienced a number of barriers that challenged our initial intentions of aiding participation and ambition to support empowerment. Moreover, it was challenging to use structured group health coaching and to work with goal-setting in groups of participants with shared, and sometimes competing, goals, wishes and needs related to food and PA. Successful experiences from this intervention was the importance of acquiring a broad and deep understanding of the context and participants, being open to negotiating, as well as adjusting the intervention. © The Author(s) 2019.
