  • Energy flow and rapidity gaps between jets in photoproduction at HERA
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 24:4, s. 517-527
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dijet events in photon-proton collisions in which there is a large pseudorapidity separation, Deltaeta > 2.5 between the two highest E-T jets are studied with the H1 detector at HERA. The inclusive dijet cross sections are measured as functions of the longitudinal momentum fractions of the proton and photon which participate in the production of the jets, x(p)(jets) and x(gamma)(jets) respectively, Deltaeta, the pseudorapidity P separation between the two highest E-T jets, and E-T(gap), the total summed transverse energy between the jets. Rapidity gap events are defined as events in which E-T(gap) is less than E-T(cut), for E-T(cut) varied between jets 0.5 and 2.0 GeV. The fraction of dijet events with a rapidity gap is measured differentially in Deltaeta, x(p)(jets) and x(gamma)(jets). An excess of events with rapidity gaps at low values of E-T(cut) is observed above the expectation from standard photoproduction processes. This excess can be explained by the exchange of a strongly interacting colour singlet object between the jets.

  • Modular interconnection system for optical PCB and backplane communication
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Parallel and Distributed Processing Symposium., Proceedings International, IPDPS 2002, Abstracts and CD-ROM. - Los Alamitos, Calif. : IEEE Press. - 0769515738 ; , s. 245-250
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a way of building modular systems with a powerful optical interconnection network. Each module, placed on a Printed Circuit Board (PCB), has a generic optical communication interface with a simple electronic router. Together with optical switching using micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) technology, packet switching over reconfigurable topologies is possible. The interconnection system gives the possibility to integrate electronics with optics without changing existing PCB technology. Great interest from industry is therefore expected and the cost advantages are several: reuse of module designs, module upgrades without changing the PCB, low-cost conventional PCB technology, etc. In the version described in this paper, the interconnection system has 48 bidirectional optical channels for intra-PCB communication on each board. For inter-PCB communication, a backplane with 192 bidirectional optical channels supports communication between twelve PCBs. With 2.5 Gbit/s per optical channel in each direction, the aggregated intra-PCB bit rate is 120 Gbit/s full duplex (on each PCB) while the aggregated inter-PCB bit rate is 480 Gbit/s full duplex. A case study shows the feasibility of the interconnection system in a parallel processing system for radar signal processing.

  • Optoelectronic router with a reconfigurable shuffle network based on micro-optoelectromechanical systems
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Optical Networking. - Washington, USA : Optical Society of America. - 1536-5379. ; 4:1, s. 1-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An optoelectronic router with a shuffle exchange network is presented and enhanced by the addition of micro-optoelectromechanical systems (MOEMS) in the network to add the ability to reconfigure the shuffle network. The MOEMS described here are fully connected any-to-any crossbar switches. The added reconfigurability provides the opportunity to adapt the system to different common application characteristics. Two representative application models are described: The first has symmetric properties, and the second has asymmetric properties. The router system is simulated with the specified applications and an analysis of the results is carried out. By use of MOEMS in the optical network, and thus reconfigurability, greater than 50% increased throughput performance and decreased average packet delay are obtained for the given application. Network congestion is avoided throughout the system if reconfigurability is used.

  • System-Level Runtime Reconfigurablity - Optical Interconnection Networks for Switching Applications
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the International Conference on Engineering of Reconfigurable Systems and Algorithms, ERSA'04. - Athens, USA : CSREA Press. - 1932415424 - 9781932415421 ; , s. 155-162
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The performance requirements on data and telecommunication switches and routers are continuously increasing and it is evident that new ideas and architectures must come to light to satisfy these new demands. In this paper, a runtime reconfigurable modular design approach is presented, using state-of-the-art microoptical-electrical mechanical system (MOEMS) components. The paper introduces a novel field of reconfigurability, where reconfiguration is made on the system level instead of, e.g. fine-granularity reconfigurable logic. Different reconfigurable system solutions with support to adapt for asymmetric traffic patterns are proposed and compared to see how design choices affect flexibility, performance etc. The proposed solutions are characterized by their multistage networks with reconfigurable shuffle patterns.

  • Visualizing the Potential of Reconfigurable Shuffle-Patterns in Optoelectronic Routers by the Use of MOEMS
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the IASTED International Conference Communication Systems and Networks. - Calgary, Canada : ACTA Press. - 0889864500 ; , s. 148-154
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A reconfigurable high performance multistage router architecture is presented and simulated. The router backbone network is an optical shuffle exchange network that has the power of reconfigurability through the use of micro-optical-electrical mechanical systems (MOEMS). The router is subjected to different application classes. The application classes have different characteristics in terms of symmetric/asymmetric traffic properties. We compare our reconfigurable shuffle-pattern for all three application classes for the specified router architecture.

  • Implications of IDS Classification on Attack Detection
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Nordic Workshop on Secure IT Systems (NordSec). - 8299398045 ; , s. 57--70-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Accurate taxonomies are critical for the advancement of research fields. Taxonomies for intrusion detection systems (IDSs) are not fully agreed upon, and further lack convincing motivation of their categories. We survey and summarize previously made taxonomies for intrusion detection. Focusing on categories relevant for detection methods, we extract commonly used concepts and define three new attributes: the reference model type, the reference model generation process, and the reference model updating strategy. Using our framework, the range of previously used terms can easily be explained. We study the usefulness of these attributes with two empirical evaluations. Firstly, we use the taxonomy to create a survey of existing research IDSs, with a successful result, i.e. the IDSs are well scattered in the defined space. Secondly, we investigate whether we can reason about the detection capability based on detection method classes, as defined by our framework. We establish that different detection methods vary in their capability to detect specific attack types. The reference model type seems better suited than reference model generation process for such reasoning. However, our results are tentative and based on a relatively small number of attacks.

  • Using Active Learning in Intrusion Detection
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Computer Security Foundations Workshop. - 076952169X ; , s. 88--98-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) have become an important part of operational computer security. They are the last line of defense against malicious hackers and help detect ongoing attacks as well as mitigate their damage. However, intrusion detection systems are not turnkey solutions but are heavily dependent on expensive and scarce security experts for successful operation. By emphasizing self-learning algorithms, we can reduce dependence on the domain expert but instead require massive amounts of labeled training data, another scarce resource in intrusion detection. In this paper we investigate whether an active learning algorithm can perform on a par with a traditional self-learning algorithm in terms of detection accuracy but using significantly less labeled data. Our preliminary findings indicate that the active learning algorithm generally performs better than the traditional learning algorithm given the same amount of training data. Moreover, the reduction of labeled data needed can be as much as 80 times, shown by comparing an active learner with a traditional learner with similar detection accuracy. Thus, active learning algorithms seem promising in that they can reduce the dependence on security experts in the development of new detection rules by better leveraging the knowledge and time of the expert.
