- In this paper two related simplification problems for systems of linear inequalities describing precedence relation systems are considered. Given a precedence relation system, the first problem seeks a minimum equivalent subset of the precedence relations (i.e., inequalities) which has the same solution set as that of the original system. The second problem is similar to the first one, but the minimum equivalent system need not be a subset of the original system. This paper shows that the first problem is NP-hard. However, a sufficient condition is derived under which the first problem is solvable in polynomial-time. In addition, a decomposition of the first problem into independent tractable and intractable subproblems is derived. The second problem is shown to be solvable in polynomial-time, with a full parameterization of all solutions described. The results in this paper generalize those in [Moyles and Thompson 1969, Aho, Garey, and Ullman 1972] for the minimum equivalent graph problem and transitive reduction problem, which are applicable to unweighted directed graphs.

- Knowledge of gonadal hormone-related influences on human brain anatomy, function, and chemistry is scarce. The present review scrutinized organizational and functional neuroimaging correlates of the menstrual cycle and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Supportive evidence of cyclic short-term structural and functional brain plasticity in response to gonadal hormonal modulation is provided. The paucity of studies, sparsity and discordance of findings, and weaknesses in study design at present hinder the drawing of firm conclusions. Ideal study designs should comprise high-resolution multimodal neuroimaging (e.g., MRI, DTI, rsfMRI, fMRI, PET), hormones, genetic, and behavioral longitudinal assessments of healthy women and PMDD patients at critical time points of the menstrual cycle phase (i.e., early follicular phase, late follicular phase, mid-luteal phase) in a counter-balanced setup. Studies integrating large-scale brain network structural, functional, and molecular neuroimaging, as well as treatment data, will deepen the understanding of neural state, disorder, and treatment markers.

- The solutions to moral problems offered by contemporary moral theories largely depend on how they understand pluralism. This article compares two different kinds of universal moral theories, liberal impartiality theory and discourse ethics. It defends the twofold thesis that (1) a dialogical theory such as discourse ethics is better equipped to give an account of pluralism than impartiality theory due to a more correct understanding of the nature of conflict, but that (2) discourse ethics cannot, contrary to what Jürgen Habermas claims, embrace the notion of impartiality connected to agent-neutrality. The article argues that pluralism reflects conflicts among values not only between but also within people and that discourse ethics can include both these dimensions since it recognizes the constitutive connection between deliberation and (moral) conflict. Thus, unlike impartiality theory, it can elucidate the transformative aspects of pluralism.

- Abstract At the IGISOL-4 facility, neutron-rich, medium mass nuclei have usually been produced via charged particle-induced fission of natural uranium and thorium. Neutron-induced fission is expected to have a higher production cross section of the most neutron-rich species. Development of a neutron source along with a new ion guide continues to be one of the major goals since the commissioning of IGISOL-4. Neutron intensities at different angles from a beryllium neutron source have been measured in an on-line experiment with a 30 MeV proton beam. Recently, the new ion guide coupled to the neutron source has been tested as well. Details of the neutron source and ion guide design together with preliminary results from the first neutron-induced fission experiment at IGISOL-4 are presented in this report.

Measuring independent yields of fission products using a penning trap

- A new method for determining independent fission products is used in an experiment at the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyväskylä. The method combines the chemical universality of the ion guide technique and the unique properties of the Penning trap. A beam of charged particles is formed by stopping fission products in gaseous helium. The Penning trap is employed as a highly accurate filter to identify particles by their mass. The yields of fission products are determined by the ion count downstream of the trap. The setup’s mass resolving power is on the order of 105 with a radio frequency excitation time of 400 ms. Such high mass resolution occasionally allows us not only to separate nuclides but to separate the isomeric and ground states of nuclei as well. Independent yields of fission products are measured in the fission reaction of the 232Th isotope by protons with an energy of 25 MeV. A short description of the method ae nd soexperimental data are supplememnted by the results fro theoretical calculations.

- At high luminosities black hole binaries show spectra with a strong disc component accompanied by an equally strong tail where at least some of the electrons are non-thermal. We reanalyse the simultaneous ASCA-RXTE-OSSE data from the 1998 outburst of XTE J1550-564, which span 0.7-1000 keV and remain the best data available of a black hole binary in this state. We reassess the importance of electron-positron pair production using a realistically high value of the source compactness for the first time. The lack of an observable annihilation line together with the observed gamma-ray flux beyond 511 keV constrains the maximum electron Lorentz factor to be <= 10, and the slope of the injected electrons to <= 2.5. We also use the fast (10-50 Hz) variability spectrum to constrain the spatial dependence of the electron heating and acceleration. We find that the spectrum of the fast variability is consistent with being fully thermal, so that the observed non-thermal emission is produced from further out in the flow.

Merging of appearance-based place knowledge among multiple robots

- If robots can merge the appearance-based place knowledge of other robots with their own, they can relate to these places even if they have not previously visited them. We have investigated this problem using robots with compatible visual sensing capabilities and with each robot having its individual long-term place memory. Here, each place refers to a spatial region as defined by a collection of appearances and in the place memory, the knowledge is organized in a tree hierarchy. In the proposed merging approach, the hierarchical organization plays a key role—as it corresponds to a nested sequence of hyperspheres in the appearance space. The merging proceeds by considering the extent of overlap of the respective nested hyperspheres—starting with the largest covering hypersphere. Thus, differing from related work, knowledge is merged in as large chunks as possible while the hierarchical structure is preserved accordingly. As such, the merging scales better as the extent of knowledge to be merged increases. This is demonstrated in an extensive set of multirobot experiments where robots share their knowledge and then use their merged knowledge when visiting these places.
