  • Strong size selectivity in the self-assembly of rounded nanocubes into 3D mesocrystals
  • 2020
  • In: Nanoscale Horizons. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 2055-6764 .- 2055-6756. ; 5:7, s. 1065-1072
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The self-assembly of nanoparticles into highly ordered crystals is largely influenced by variations in the size and shape of the constituent particles, with crystallization generally not observed if their polydispersity is too large. Here, we report on size selectivity in the self-assembly of rounded cubic maghemite nanoparticles into three-dimensional mesocrystals. Different X-ray scattering techniques are used to study and compare a nanoparticle dispersion that is used later for self-assembly, an ensemble of mesocrystals grown on a substrate, as well as an individual mesocrystal. The individual lm-sized mesocrystal is isolated using a focused-ion-beam-based technique and investigated by the diffraction of a micro-focused X-ray beam. Structural analysis reveals that individual mesocrystals have a drastically smaller size dispersity of nanoparticles than that in the initial dispersion, implying very strong size selectivity during self-assembly. The small size dispersity of the nanoparticles within individual mesocrystals is accompanied by a very narrow lattice parameter distribution. In contrast, the lattice parameter distribution within all mesocrystals of an ensemble is about four times wider than that of individual mesocrystals, indicating significant size fractionalization between mesocrystals during self-assembly. The small size dispersity within each mesocrystal has important implications for their physical properties.

  • The application and deployment of welfare technology in Swedish municipal care : a qualitative study of procurement practices among municipal actors
  • 2021
  • In: BMC Health Services Research. - : Springer Nature. - 1472-6963. ; 21:1
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Background Welfare technology has been launched as a concept to accelerate digital transformation in care services, but the deployment of these technologies is still hindered by organisational resistance, lack of infrastructure, and juridical and ethical issues. This paper investigates decision-making among municipal actors in the application and deployment of welfare technology from a procurement process perspective. The study explores the perceptions and negotiations involved in purchasing welfare technology at each stage of the procurement model, revealing the impact of technical, economic, juridical and ethical competence on the mapping, planning, procurement, implementation and management of welfare technology. Methods The study presents empirical findings from qualitative interviews conducted among municipal actors in Sweden. Semi-structured interviews were gathered in 2020 among procurement managers, IT managers, and managers in social administration in three different municipalities (n = 8). Content analysis and systematic categorisation were applied resulting in the division of procurement practices into sub-categories, generic categories and main categories. Results Challenges in the application and deployment of welfare technology occur at all stages of the procurement model. In mapping and planning, barriers are identified in the need analysis, requirement specification and market analysis. In the procurement stage, economic resources, standardisation and interoperability hinder the procurement process. Implementation and management are complicated by supplier assessment, legislation, cross-organisational collaboration and political strategy. Building on these findings, this study defines 'procurement competence' as consisting of technical, economic, juridical and ethical expertise in order to assess and evaluate welfare technology. Technical and ethical competence is needed in early stages of procurement, whereas juridical and economic competence relates to later stages of the model. Conclusions Procurement competence is associated with the application and deployment of welfare technology in (1) assessment of the end-user's needs, (2) estimation of the costs and benefits of welfare technology and (3) management of juridical and legislative issues in data management. Economic and juridical decisions to purchase welfare technology are not value-neutral, but rather associated with socially shared understandings of technological possibilities in care provision. Optimisation of procurement processes requires a combination of capabilities to introduce, apply and deploy welfare technology that meets the demands and needs of end-users.

  • Speculative inter-thread store-to-load forwarding in SMT architectures
  • 2023
  • In: Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing. - : Elsevier. - 0743-7315 .- 1096-0848. ; 173, s. 94-106
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Applications running on out-of-order cores have benefited for decades of store-to-load forwarding which accelerates communication of store values to loads of the same thread. Despite threads running on a simultaneous multithreading (SMT) core could also access the load queues (LQ) and store queues (SQ) / store buffers (SB) of other threads to allow inter-thread store-to-load forwarding, we have skipped exploiting it because if we allow communication of different SMT threads via their LQs and SQs/SBs, write atomicity may be violated with respect to the outside world beyond the acceptable model of read -own-write-early multiple-copy atomicity (rMCA).In our prior work, we leveraged this idea to propose inter-thread store-to-load forwarding (ITSLF). ITLSF accelerates synchronization and communication of threads running in a simultaneous multi-threading processor by allowing stores in the store-queue of a thread to forward data to loads of another thread running in the same core without violating rMCA.In this work, we extend the original ITSLF mechanism to allow inter-thread forwarding from speculative stores (Spec-ITSLF). Spec-ITSLF allows forwarding store values to other threads earlier, which further accelerates synchronization. Spec-ITSLF outperforms a baseline SMT core by 15%, which is 2% better on average (and up to 5% for the TATP workload) than the original ITSLF mechanism. More importantly, Spec-ITSLF is on par with the original ITSLF mechanism regarding storage overhead but does not need to keep track of the speculative state of stores, which was an important source of overhead and complexity in the original mechanism. • Preparation, Characterization and Adsorption Evaluation of old Newspaper Fibres using Basket Reactor (Nickel Removal by Adsorption)
  • 2016
  • In: International Journal of Environmental Research. - : University of Tehran. - 1735-6865 .- 2008-2304. ; 10:1, s. 119-130
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In this work, old newspaper fibers (ONF) bleached with H2O2, treated with KOH and treatedwith NaOCl were investigated as potential adsorbents. The characterization of the produced fibers using FTIR,SEM and particle size distribution have been carried out and tested for the removal of Ni (II) from aqueoussolutions. The results indicated that the fibers treated with KOH give the highest %removal of Ni (II) with 88%. Two different reactor designs (batch and basket reactor) with different variables were studied. The results indicated that the equilibrium time was 30 min. and the removal of Ni (II) increased significantly as the pH increased from 2.0 to 6.0 and decreased at pH range of 6.5–8.0. The adsorption of Ni (II) onto ONF treatedwith KOH using batch and basket reactors follows the Langmuir isotherm. The pseudo second order kineticmodel provided good correlation for the adsorption of Ni (II) onto ONF treated with KOH for both batch and basket reactors.

  • Inline interference mitigation techniques for spectral coexistence of GEO and NGEO satellites
  • 2013
  • In: 31st AIAA International Communications Satellite Systems Conference. - Reston, Virginia : American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. - 9781624102448
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The requirement of low latency for real time systems and high demand of broadband data are leading to the rapid deployment of Low Earth Orbit (LEO)/Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) satellite systems in several frequency bands. When the number of usable non-geostationary (NGEO) satellites i.e., LEO/MEO in space increases, the need for frequency coexistence between the NGEO satellite systems with the already existing geostationary (GEO) satellite networks increases rapidly. In this context, it is crucial to explore interference mitigation techniques between GEO and NGEO systems in order to allow their spectral coexistence. More specifically, in the coexistence scenario of GEO and NGEO satellite networks, in-line interference may be a serious problem and it arises whenever an NGEO satellite passes through a line of sight path between a GEO earth station and a GEO satellite. In this paper, we carry out interference analysis between GEO and NGEO systems considering the case of O3b satellite systems and propose an adaptive power control technique for both the uplink and the downlink coexistence scenarios in order to mitigate the in-line interference. Furthermore, we provide several cognitive solutions for mitigating the in-line interference.
