  • "Out of the frying pan into the fire”: Mauritian social workers’ perspectives on disaster governance in Mauritius
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Social Work. - : Oxford University Press. - 0045-3102 .- 1468-263X. ; 51:5, s. 1585-1604
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mauritius, which is a Small Island Developing State with low economic resilience and limited capacity to deal with disasters, is currently trying to recover from two major disasters – COVID-19 and an oil spill caused by a shipwreck. This article aims to explore the Mauritian social workers’ perspectives on the disaster governance in relation to these double disasters. Data were collected from 18 social workers using web-based online interview tools in September 2020. An abductive thematic network method based on governance network theory was used to analyse the collected data with the help of the ATLAS.ti software. In the findings, the perspectives of the respondents on the structures and mechanisms for DSW and the factors that affect disaster governance in Mauritius are presented and discussed. This article concludes that there is a lack of organised structures and mechanisms for disaster social work, and there is a need to promote good governance in disaster response in Mauritius.

  • Diffusion Length in n-doped 4H Silicon Carbide Crystals Detected by Alpha Particle Probe
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Materials Science Forum. - : Trans Tech Publications Inc.. - 0255-5476 .- 1662-9752. ; 615-617, s. 857-860
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The achievement of nuclear detectors in silicon carbide imposes severe constraints onthe electronic quality and thickness of the material due to the relatively high value of the energyrequired to generate an electron-hole pair (7.8 eV) in this material compared to the value for Si (3.6 eV). In this work, 4H-SiC charged particle detectors were realised using epitaxial layers ofn-type doping as active region. The thickness of the epilayer is always below 80 μm with a netdoping concentration in the range of 8 x 1013 to 1016 cm-3. These properties allowed the fabricationof Schottky diodes that operate well as radiation detectors. At low doping concentration, theepilayer is totally depleted at quite low reverse bias (≈ 50 V), thereby obtaining the maximumactive volume.

  • Health disparities based on neighbourhood and social conditions : Open Comparisons-an indicator-based comparative study in Sweden
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Public Health. - 0033-3506 .- 1476-5616. ; 174, s. 97-101
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: The overarching goal of the Swedish public health policy is to create the right societal conditions for good and equitable health throughout the population and to reduce avoidable health inequalities within a generation. The objective of this article is to highlight the main findings of the Open Comparisons in Public Health (OCPH) 2019 study. STUDY DESIGN: The OCPH is a longitudinal indicator-based comparative study, encompassing 39 public health indicators with results from Sweden's 21 regions and 290 municipalities. METHODS: Descriptive statistics and 95% confidence intervals were used to compare results between municipalities, regions and time points. Correlation analysis was used to study the strength of the relationship between the results of municipalities and their socio-economic conditions. RESULTS: Across the population, levels of health are good and have, in some areas, improved over recent decades. However, some significant health disparities remain according to neighbourhood, sex, age and educational background. Health disparities related to the level of education are often larger than those between women and men, and there are larger differences within a region than between regions. Health disparities have, in some cases, increased, such as for life expectancy. CONCLUSION: If health equity is to be achieved, leaders at all levels must collaborate and advocate for political action and local efficient public health interventions to eliminate health disparities as a result of neighbourhood and social conditions.

  • No excess risk of colorectal cancer among alcoholics followed for up to 25 years
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Cancer. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0007-0920 .- 1532-1827. ; 88:7, s. 1044-1046
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We conducted a population-based retrospective cohort study among 179 398 Swedish patients hospitalised for alcoholism from 1970 to 1994, and found no excess risk for colorectal cancers, overall or at any anatomical subsite. Our findings challenge the hypothesis that alcohol intake is a risk factor for cancer of the large bowel.

  • Influence of molecular size and zeta potential in electrokinetic biosensing
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Biosensors & bioelectronics. - : Elsevier. - 0956-5663 .- 1873-4235. ; 152
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Electrokinetic principles such as streaming current and streaming potential are extensively used for surface characterization. Recently, they have also been used in biosensors, resulting in enhanced sensitivity and simpler device architecture. Theoretical models regarding streaming current/potential studies of particle-covered surfaces have identified features such as the particle size, shape and surface charge to influence the electrokinetic signals and consequently, the sensitivity and effective operational regime of the biosensor. By using a set of well-characterized proteins with varying size and net surface charge, this article experimentally verifies the theoretical predictions about their influence on the sensor signal. Increasing protein size was shown to enhance the signal when their net surface charge was either opposite to that of the sensor surface, or close to zero, in agreement with the theoretical predictions. However, the effect gradually saturated as the protein size exceeded the coulomb screening length of the electrolyte. In contrast, the proteins containing the same type of charge as the surface showed little or no difference, except that the signal inverted. The magnitude of the surface charge was also shown to influence the signal. The sensitivity of the technique for protein detection varied over two orders of magnitude, depending upon the size and surface charge. Furthermore, the capacity of the electrokinetic method for direct electrical detection of various proteins, including those carrying little or no net electric charges, is demonstrated.

  • A century of trends in adult human height
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: eLIFE. - : eLife Sciences Publications Ltd. - 2050-084X. ; 5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Being taller is associated with enhanced longevity, and higher education and earnings. We reanalysed 1472 population-based studies, with measurement of height on more than 18.6 million participants to estimate mean height for people born between 1896 and 1996 in 200 countries. The largest gain in adult height over the past century has occurred in South Korean women and Iranian men, who became 20.2 cm (95% credible interval 17.5–22.7) and 16.5 cm (13.3– 19.7) taller, respectively. In contrast, there was little change in adult height in some sub-Saharan African countries and in South Asia over the century of analysis. The tallest people over these 100 years are men born in the Netherlands in the last quarter of 20th century, whose average heights surpassed 182.5 cm, and the shortest were women born in Guatemala in 1896 (140.3 cm; 135.8– 144.8). The height differential between the tallest and shortest populations was 19-20 cm a century ago, and has remained the same for women and increased for men a century later despite substantial changes in the ranking of countries.

  • Lower hybrid waves in the ion diffusion and magnetospheric inflow regions
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research - Space Physics. - : AMER GEOPHYSICAL UNION. - 2169-9380 .- 2169-9402. ; 122:1, s. 517-533
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The role and properties of lower hybrid waves in the ion diffusion region and magnetospheric inflow region of asymmetric reconnection are investigated using the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission. Two distinct groups of lower hybrid waves are observed in the ion diffusion region and magnetospheric inflow region, which have distinct properties and propagate in opposite directions along the magnetopause. One group develops near the ion edge in the magnetospheric inflow, where magnetosheath ions enter the magnetosphere through the finite gyroradius effect and are driven by the ion-ion cross-field instability due to the interaction between the magnetosheath ions and cold magnetospheric ions. This leads to heating of the cold magnetospheric ions. The second group develops at the sharpest density gradient, where the Hall electric field is observed and is driven by the lower hybrid drift instability. These drift waves produce cross-field particle diffusion, enabling magnetosheath electrons to enter the magnetospheric inflow region thereby broadening the density gradient in the ion diffusion region.
