  • Intercomparison and evaluation of global aerosol microphysical properties among AeroCom models of a range of complexity
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Atmospheric Chemistry And Physics. - : Copernicus GmbH. - 1680-7316 .- 1680-7324. ; 14:9, s. 4679-4713
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many of the next generation of global climate models will include aerosol schemes which explicitly simulate the microphysical processes that determine the particle size distribution. These models enable aerosol optical properties and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) concentrations to be determined by fundamental aerosol processes, which should lead to a more physically based simulation of aerosol direct and indirect radiative forcings. This study examines the global variation in particle size distribution simulated by 12 global aerosol microphysics models to quantify model diversity and to identify any common biases against observations. Evaluation against size distribution measurements from a new European network of aerosol supersites shows that the mean model agrees quite well with the observations at many sites on the annual mean, but there are some seasonal biases common to many sites. In particular, at many of these European sites, the accumulation mode number concentration is biased low during winter and Aitken mode concentrations tend to be overestimated in winter and underestimated in summer. At high northern latitudes, the models strongly underpredict Aitken and accumulation particle concentrations compared to the measurements, consistent with previous studies that have highlighted the poor performance of global aerosol models in the Arctic. In the marine boundary layer, the models capture the observed meridional variation in the size distribution, which is dominated by the Aitken mode at high latitudes, with an increasing concentration of accumulation particles with decreasing latitude. Considering vertical profiles, the models reproduce the observed peak in total particle concentrations in the upper troposphere due to new particle formation, although modelled peak concentrations tend to be biased high over Europe. Overall, the multimodel-mean data set simulates the global variation of the particle size distribution with a good degree of skill, suggesting that most of the individual global aerosol microphysics models are performing well, although the large model diversity indicates that some models are in poor agreement with the observations. Further work is required to better constrain size-resolved primary and secondary particle number sources, and an improved understanding of nucleation and growth (e. g. the role of nitrate and secondary organics) will improve the fidelity of simulated particle size distributions.

  • Long range plan with radioactive beams at Dubna
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: 3rd International Conference on Current Problems in Nuclear Physics and Atomic Energy, NPAE 2010; Kyiv; Ukraine; 7 June 2010 through 12 June 2010. ; , s. 64-69
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A program for upgrade of existing radioactive ion beams facilities at Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions, JINR Dubna is presented. A project of a new in-flight fragment separator ACCULINNA-2 is proposed. It is expected the new instrument will be more universal and powerful than the existing nowadays. The beam intensity should be increased by factor 10-15, its optical quality greatly improved and the range of the accessible secondary radioactive beams broadened up to Z∼20. Main ion-optical characteristics, operating principles and a tentative plan for the project realization are included. An extensive research program based on local experiments made so far and international proposals for these equipments is discussed.

  • Highly potent soluble amyloid-β seeds in human Alzheimer brain but not cerebrospinal fluid.
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Brain : a journal of neurology. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1460-2156. ; 137:11, s. 2909-2915
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The soluble fraction of brain samples from patients with Alzheimer's disease contains highly biologically active amyloid-β seeds. In this study, we sought to assess the potency of soluble amyloid-β seeds derived from the brain and cerebrospinal fluid. Soluble Alzheimer's disease brain extracts were serially diluted and then injected into the hippocampus of young, APP transgenic mice. Eight months later, seeded amyloid-β deposition was evident even when the hippocampus received subattomole amounts of brain-derived amyloid-β. In contrast, cerebrospinal fluid from patients with Alzheimer's disease, which contained more than 10-fold higher levels of amyloid-β peptide than the most concentrated soluble brain extracts, did not induce detectable seeding activity in vivo. Similarly, cerebrospinal fluid from aged APP-transgenic donor mice failed to induce cerebral amyloid-β deposition. In comparison to the soluble brain fraction, cerebrospinal fluid largely lacked N-terminally truncated amyloid-β species and exhibited smaller amyloid-β-positive particles, features that may contribute to the lack of in vivo seeding by cerebrospinal fluid. Interestingly, the same cerebrospinal fluid showed at least some seeding activity in an in vitro assay. The present results indicate that the biological seeding activity of soluble amyloid-β species is orders of magnitude greater in brain extracts than in the cerebrospinal fluid.

  • In-orbit performance of Herschel-HIFI
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 537
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aims: In this paper the calibration and in-orbit performance of the Heterodyne Instrument for the Far-Infrared (HIFI) is described. Methods: The calibration of HIFI is based on a combination of ground and in-flight tests. Dedicated ground tests to determine those instrument parameters that can only be measured accurately using controlled laboratory stimuli were carried out in the instrument level test (ILT) campaign. Special in-flight tests during the commissioning phase (CoP) and performance verification (PV) allowed the determination of the remaining instrument parameters. The various instrument observing modes, as specified in astronomical observation templates (AOTs), were validated in parallel during PV by observing selected celestial sources. Results: The initial calibration and in-orbit performance of HIFI has been established. A first estimate of the calibration budget is given. The overall in-flight instrument performance agrees with the original specification. Issues remain at only a few frequencies. Herschel is an ESA space observatory with science instruments provided by European-led Principal Investigator consortia and with important participation from NASA.

  • Direct Observations of Amyloid beta Self-Assembly in Live Cells Provide Insights into Differences in the Kinetics of A beta(1-40) and A beta(1-42) Aggregation
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Chemistry and Biology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1074-5521. ; 21:6, s. 732-742
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Insight into how amyloid beta (A beta) aggregation occurs in vivo is vital for understanding the molecular pathways that underlie Alzheimer's disease and requires new techniques that provide detailed kinetic and mechanistic information. Using noninvasive fluorescence lifetime recordings, we imaged the formation of A beta(1-40) and A beta(1-42) aggregates in live cells. For both peptides, the cellular uptake via endocytosis is rapid and spontaneous. They are then retained in lysosomes, where their accumulation leads to aggregation. The kinetics of A beta(1-42) aggregation are considerably faster than those of A beta(1-40) and, unlike those of the latter peptide, show no detectable lag phase. We used superresolution fluorescence imaging to examine the resulting aggregates and could observe compact amyloid structures, likely because of spatial confinement within cellular compartments. Taken together, these findings provide clues as to how A beta aggregation may occur within neurons.

  • OH regeneration from methacrolein oxidation investigated in the atmosphere simulation chamber SAPHIR
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics. - : Copernicus GmbH. - 1680-7316 .- 1680-7324. ; 14:15, s. 7895-7908
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hydroxyl radicals (OH) are the most important reagent for the oxidation of trace gases in the atmosphere. OH concentrations measured during recent field campaigns in isoprene-rich environments were unexpectedly large. A number of studies showed that unimolecular reactions of organic peroxy radicals (RO2) formed in the initial reaction step of isoprene with OH play an important role for the OH budget in the atmosphere at low mixing ratios of nitrogen monoxide (NO) of less than 100 pptv. It has also been suggested that similar reactions potentially play an important role for RO2 from other compounds. Here, we investigate the oxidation of methacrolein (MACR), one major oxidation product of isoprene, by OH in experiments in the simulation chamber SAPHIR under controlled atmospheric conditions. The experiments show that measured OH concentrations are approximately 50% larger than calculated by the Master Chemical Mechanism (MCM) for conditions of the experiments (NO mixing ratio of 90 pptv). The analysis of the OH budget reveals an OH source that is not accounted for in MCM, which is correlated with the production rate of RO2 radicals from MACR. In order to balance the measured OH destruction rate, 0.77 OH radicals (1 sigma error: +/- 0.31) need to be additionally reformed from each reaction of OH with MACR. The strong correlation of the missing OH source with the production of RO2 radicals is consistent with the concept of OH formation from unimolecular isomerization and decomposition reactions of RO2. The comparison of observations with model calculations gives a lower limit of 0.03 s(-1) for the reaction rate constant if the OH source is at-tributed to an isomerization reaction of MACR-1-OH-2-OO and MACR-2-OH-2-OO formed in the MACR + OH reaction as suggested in the literature (Crounse et al., 2012). This fast isomerization reaction would be a competitor to the reaction of this RO2 species with a minimum of 150 pptv NO. The isomerization reaction would be the dominant reaction pathway for this specific RO2 radical in forested regions, where NO mixing ratios are typically much smaller.

  • Investigation of tool wear mechanisms in CGI machining
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Mechatronics and Manufacturing Systems. - : Inderscience publisher. - 1753-1039 .- 1753-1047. ; 4:1, s. 3-18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, the tool wear, including wear mechanisms on coated cemented carbide inserts were investigated in the turning of Compacted Graphite Iron (CGI) materials with varying nodularity. The results showed that increasing nodularity, in the range of 5–62%, affects wear at moderate and high cutting speeds without having the same impact at lower cutting speeds. A small difference in nodularity, in the lower range, such as an increase from 5% to 20%, has a more significant impact on wear than an increase from 20% to 62%.

  • A Methodology for Temperature Correction When Using Two-Color Pyrometers : Compensation for Surface Topography and Material
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Experimental mechanics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0014-4851 .- 1741-2765. ; 54:3, s. 369-377
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this investigation, the applicability of the two-color pyrometer technique for temperature measurements in dry hard turning of AISI 52100 steel was studied, where both machined surfaces as well as cutting tools were considered. The impacts of differing hard turned surface topography on the two-color pyrometer readings was studied by conducting temperature measurements on reference samples created using cutting tools with different degrees of tool flank wear. In order to conduct measurements in a controlled environment, a specially designed furnace was developed in which the samples were heated step-wise up to 1,000 °C in a protective atmosphere. At each testing temperature, the temperatures measured by the two-color pyrometer were compared with temperatures recorded by thermocouples. For all materials and surfaces as studied here, the two-color pyrometer generally recorded significantly lower temperatures than the thermocouples; for the hard turned surfaces, depending on the surface topography, the temperatures were as much as 20 % lower and for the CBN cutting tools, 13 % lower. To be able to use the two-color pyrometer technique for temperature measurements in hard turning of AISI 52100 steel, a linear approximation function was determined resulting in three unique equations, one for each of the studied materials and surfaces. By using the developed approximation function, the measured cutting temperatures can be adjusted to compensate for differing materials or surface topographies for comparable machining conditions. Even though the proposed equations are unique for the hard turning conditions as studied here, the proposed methodology can be applied to determine the temperature compensation required for other surface topographies, as well as other materials. © 2013 Society for Experimental Mechanics.
