  • Crossing the dripline to N-11 using elastic resonance scattering
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 6203:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The level structure of the unbound nucleus N-11 has been studied by C-10+p elastic resonance scattering in inverse geometry with the LISE3 spectrometer at GANIL, using a C-10 beam with an energy of 9.0 MeV/ nucleon. An additional measurement was done at the A1200 spectrometer at MSU. The excitation function above the C-10+p threshold has been determined up to 5 MeV. A potential-model analysis revealed three resonance states at energies 1.27(-0.05)(+0.18) MeV (Gamma = 1.44 +/- 0.2 MeV), 2.01(-0.05)(+0.15) MeV (Gamma = 0.84 +/- 0.2 MeV), and 3.75 +/- 0.05 MeV (Gamma = 0.60 +/- 0.05 MeV) with the spin-parity assignments I-pi=1/2+,1/2,-,5/2+, respectively. Hence, N-11 is shown to have a ground state parity inversion completely analogous to its mirror partner Be-11. A narrow resonance in the excitation function at 4.33 +/- 0.05 MeV was also observed and assigned spin parity 3/2-.

  • Anti-tuberculosis treatment in private pharmacies, Kathmandu Valley, Nepal.
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: The International Journal of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease. - 1027-3719 .- 1815-7920. ; 4:8, s. 730-6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • SETTING: Urban municipality of 150000 citizens in Kathmandu Valley, Nepal. OBJECTIVE: To determine 1) the perceptions among private pharmacists of characteristics of tuberculosis (TB) patients visiting private pharmacies in the area, 2) the sales of different anti-tuberculosis drugs, and 3) the interaction between private health providers and pharmacists. DESIGN: Between January and April 1998, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 98% (49/50) of the private drug-retailers in the area. RESULTS: Thirty-two (65%) pharmacies had sold anti-TB drugs during the last month. Forty-three (88%) said that most TB patients were of low socio-economic status and rarely bought drugs for more than a week at a time. Only eight (16%) reported that TB patients usually returned to buy the full course of drugs. Seventy-two per cent of total spending on anti-tuberculosis drugs was for different kinds of combinations of drugs. Nine per cent was spent on plain rifampicin, believed to be sold only to tuberculosis/leprosy patients. During the previous month, 5/13 (38%) of pharmacies with no doctors attached had sold anti-tuberculosis drugs compared with 27/38 (71%) of pharmacies with doctors attached to them (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The private sector offers an available and acceptable but non-affordable service for many TB patients. A substantial amount of anti-TB drugs are being sold in the private pharmacies. There is therefore a potential role for pharmacists to play in collaborative efforts between the private and public sector in TB control activities.

  • Recoil decay tagging of gamma rays in the extremely neutron-deficient nucleus Os-162
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - : American Physical Society. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 70:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The neutron-deficient nucleus Os-162, produced in the Cd-106(Ni-58,2n) reaction, has been studied using the JUROGAM gamma-ray spectrometer in conjunction with the RITU gas-filled separator and the GREAT focal plane spectrometer. gamma-ray transitions in Os-162 have been assigned for the first time through the application of the recoil decay tagging technique. The excitation energy of the 2(+) state and the tentative energy of the 8(+) state are discussed in terms of the systematic energy trends as the N=82 shell gap is approached.

  • Variation in the CTLA4/CD28 gene region confers an increased risk of coeliac disease.
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Annals of human genetics. - 0003-4800 .- 1469-1809. ; 66:Pt 2, s. 125-37
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Susceptibility to coeliac disease involves HLA and non-HLA-linked genes. The CTLA4/CD28 gene region encodes immune regulatory T-cell surface molecules and is a strong candidate as a susceptibility locus. We evaluated CTLA4/CD28 in coeliac disease by genetic linkage and association and combined our findings with published studies through a meta-analysis. 116 multiplex families were genotyped across CTLA4/CD28 using eight markers. The contribution of CTLA4/CD28 to coeliac disease was assessed by non-parametric linkage and association analyses. Seven studies were identified that had evaluated the relationship between CTLA4/CD28 and coeliac disease and a pooled analysis of data undertaken. In our study there was evidence for a relationship between variation in the CTLA4/CD28 region and coeliac disease by linkage and association analyses. However, the findings did not attain formal statistical significance (p = 0.004 and 0.039, respectively). Pooling findings with published results showed significant evidence for linkage (504 families) and association (940 families): p values, 0.0001 and 0.0014 at D2S2214, respectively, and 0.0008 and 0.0006 at D2S116, respectively. These findings suggest that variation in the CD28/CTLA4 gene region is a determinant of coeliac disease susceptibility. Dissecting the sequence variation underlying this relationship will depend on further analyses utilising denser sets of markers.

  • Three-dimensional outgrowth of a wood-rotting fungus added to a contaminated soil from a former gasworks site
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Bioresource Technology. - 1873-2976. ; 78:1, s. 37-45
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The capability of wood-rotting fungi (WRF) to colonise contaminated soil is an important fungal characteristic in the development of WRF-based soil bioremediation, it is also important to have methods that monitor the presence of the WRF in the soil. In this lab-scale study, it was shown that it was possible to re-capture, localise and identify a brown-rot fungus, Antrodia vaillantii, after it has been inoculated into, and grown in, a contaminated soil from a former gasworks site. The three-dimensional outgrowth of A. vaillantii was monitored by allowing it to grow into fungicide-treated wood baits, temporarily placed in the soil. After two weeks, the baits were withdrawn from the soil and surface sterilised with hydrogen peroxide to favour fungi growing inside baits, i.e., A. vaillantii. After subsequent plating of baits on selective agar medium the presence of A. vaillantii was confirmed with PCR/RFLP. A. vaillantii was found to be viable throughout the 54 days long study and exhibited a surface growth pattern similar to other well-known cord-forming basidiomycetes. Firstly, the upper part of the soil closest to the place of inoculation was colonised, however, over a period of time, the area of colonisation spread deeper into the soil. The detection method employed in the current study gave a conservative estimate of the fungal proliferation and did not require extensive sampling. Its use could be applicable in both applied research, such as soil bioremediation, and in pure microbial ecology studies.
