  • Teamwork and Safety Climate in home care : a mixed method study
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. - Basel, Switzerland : MDPI. - 1661-7827 .- 1660-4601. ; 15:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A rapidly changing homecare service sector implies difficulties to control safety and health risks for staff and to guarantee standardised deliveries of services to recipients. This study aimed to describe staff perceptions of safety climate and practices in homecare service teams, and suggestions for improvements. A second aim was to identify if and how the appraisals of safety climate were related to individual perceptions of safety, mental strain and adverse events/injury. A convergent parallel mixed methods design was used. Nursing assistants and care aides (133 in total, representing 11 work teams) in the north of Sweden replied to a survey and participated in focus group interviews. Results were analysed with ANOVA (inter-team differences) and by qualitative content analysis. Significant diversity was identified between the teams in five of seven dimensions of safety climate. Important areas for improvement were: a need to define and agree on criteria for a safe working environment; leadership prioritising safety at work; and management able to provide trust, support and time. A prerequisite for these agreements was improved authority and communication between all parties involved. The safety climate dimensions were related to personal perceptions of safety and mental strain and, partly, to adverse events/injuries.

  • Gender differences in time pressure and health among journalists
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Time & Society. - : Sage Publications. - 0961-463X .- 1461-7463. ; 24:2, s. 244-271
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim was to examine how different aspects of time pressure are associatedwith health and gender. The study is based on data collected by cross-sectionalquestionnaire from 153 female and 167 male journalists at three editorial officesin Sweden. Spearman correlation coefficients by gender were analysed betweensix different time pressure variables and seven health measures. For womenthree health indicators correlated significantly with time pressure expressed as''short of time for reflection''. For men, health as expressed by four indicatorswas primarily related to ''lack of efficiency''. Severe time pressure correlatedespecially highly with stress but only to an almost negligible degree with neckand shoulder symptoms. Our analysis showed that the relation between timepressure and health differs between women and men and that time pressure canbe interpreted in several different ways.

  • Postsurgical Acute Phase Reaction is Associated with Decreased Levels of Circulating Myostatin
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Inflammation. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0360-3997 .- 1573-2576. ; 38:4, s. 1727-1730
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Muscle strength is of importance for postsurgical rehabilitation. Myostatin is a growth factor that regulates the size of muscles and could thus influence muscle mass and function in the postsurgical period. The aim of the present study was to study the changes in myostatin levels during the postsurgical inflammatory period. Myostatin was analysed in serum samples from two elective surgery groups, orthopaedic surgery (n = 24) and coronary bypass patients (n = 21). The samples were collected prior to surgery and 4 and 30 days after surgery. In the orthopaedic group, the median myostatin levels decreased from 3582 ng/L prior to surgery to 774 ng/L at day 4 (p < 0.001) and to 2016 ng/L at day 30 (p < 0.001). Median CRP increased from 2.35 mg/L preoperatively to 117 mg/L at day 4 and decreased to 5.5 mg/L at day 30 in the same group. The coronary bypass group showed a similar pattern with a decrease in myostatin from 4212 ng/L to 2574 ng/L at day 4 (p < 0.001) and to 2808 ng/L at day 30 (p = 0.002). Median CRP increased from 1.80 mg/L preoperatively to 136 mg/L at day 4 and returned to 6.12 mg/L at day 30 in the coronary bypass group. There was a significant decrease in myostatin concentrations both in the early and late postsurgical period. The lowest myostatin concentration time point coincided with the highest CRP concentration time point.
