Household consumption: Influences of aspiration level, social comparison, and money management

- The present research posits and tests a model of household consumption of less necessary or luxury goods and services. It is hypothesized that a households economic situation has a direct effect on this consumption as well as indirect effects mediated by aspiration level, social comparison and money management. Structural equation modeling of questionnaire data from a sample of households in a metropolitan area of Sweden (n = 411) was used to test the model. The results reveal that as expected the households economic situation has a significant direct effect on consumption and indirect effects through aspiration level and social comparison. The results also show that satisfaction with consumption increases with increased consumption and decreases with higher aspiration levels

Implant-supported welded titanium frameworks in the edentulous maxilla: a 5-year prospective multicenter study.

- PURPOSE: This study evaluated the 5-year clinical and radiographic performance of fixed implant-supported maxillary prostheses with either welded titanium or conventional cast-gold alloy frameworks. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-eight consecutive patients were provided with 349 osseointegrated Brånemark system implants in the edentulous maxilla at six different implant centers. Twenty-eight of the patients received, at random, prostheses with laser-welded titanium frameworks, and the remaining 30 patients had prostheses with conventional cast-gold alloy frameworks. Clinical and radiographic data were collected for 5 years after prosthesis placement. RESULTS: The titanium and cast-gold framework groups exhibited similar cumulative survival and success rates (CSR). The 5-year implant CSR from time of placement was 91.4% and 94.0%, respectively, and from prosthesis delivery the rate was 94.9% and 95.6%, respectively. The corresponding 5-year prosthesis CSRs were 96.4% and 93.3%. One patient from each group lost all the implants and turned to complete dentures within the first year of function. Another patient with a cast-gold framework had the prosthesis replaced after 4 years, basically because of problems with the veneering material. No fractures of implant components were observed during the follow-up period. Bone loss was on average 0.59 mm (SD 0.97 mm) during 5 years, with no statistical difference between the two groups. CONCLUSION: Welded titanium frameworks presented a similar favorable clinical performance as conventional cast-gold alloy frameworks in fixed implant-supported prostheses in the edentulous maxilla after 5 years in function. Implant failures were concentrated in only a few patients in each study group.

Det sägs att vi har gått från en rigid arbetsorganissation till en flexibel, från dåliga arbetsvillkor till goda. Hittills har sådana uttalanden inte stått på empirisk grund. I den här boken görs en empirisk prövning av två centrala teser i retoriken: att alla arbetsorganisationer nu är flexibla, och att arbetsvillkoren är bättre för de anställda på flexibla än på icke-flexibla arbetsplatser. Resultaten drar retoriken i tvivelsmål. Allt är inte nytt - och det nya är inte bra för alla

- Tissue motion of the beating heart generates large movement artifacts in the laser Doppler perfusion monitoring (LDPM) signal. The aim of the study was to use tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) to localise intervals during the cardiac cycle where the influence of movement artifacts on the LDPM signal is minimum. TDI velocities and LDPM signals were investigated on three calves, for normal heartbeat and during occlusion of the left anterior descending coronary artery. Intervals of low tissue velocity (TDIint<1 cm s−1) during the cardiac cycle were identified. During occlusion, these intervals were compared with low LDPM signal intervals (LDPMint<50% compared with baseline). Low-velocity intervals were found in late systole (normal and occlusion) and late diastole (normal). Systolic intervals were longer and less sensitive to heart rate variation compared with diastolic ones. The overlap between LDPMint and TDIint in relation to TDIint length was 84±27% (n=14). The LDPM signal was significantly (p<0.001, n=14) lower during occlusion if calculated during minimum tissue motion inside TDIint), compared with averaging over the entire cardiac cycle without taking tissue motion into consideration. In conclusion, movement artifacts are reduced if the LDPM signal is correlated to the ECG and investigated during minimum wall motion. The optimum interval depends on the application; late systole and late diastole can be used.
