  • Multileaf collimation of electrons-clinical effects on electron energy modulation and mixed beam therapy depending on treatment head design
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Physics in Medicine and Biology. - 0031-9155 .- 1361-6560. ; 47:7, s. 1013-1024
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim Of this Study was to explore the possibilities of using multileaf-collimated electron beams for advanced radiation therapy with conventional scattering foil flattened beams. Monte Carlo simulations were performed with the aim to improve electron beam characteristics and enable isocentric multileaf collimation. The scattering foil positions, monitor chamber thickness, the MLC location and the amount of He in the treatment head were optimized for three common commercial accelerators. The performance of the three optimized treatment head designs was compared for different SSDs in air. at treatment depth in water and for some clinical cases. The effects of electron/photon beam matching including generalized random and static errors using Gaussian one-dimensional (1D) error distributions, and also electron energy modulation, were studied at treatment depth in beater, The modification of the treatment heads improved the electron beam characteristics and enabled the use of multileaf collimation in isocentric delivery of both electron and photon beams in a mixed beam IMRT procedure.

  • Electron beam collimation with focused and curved leaf end MLCs - Experimental verification of Monte Carlo optimized designs
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Medical physics (Lancaster). - : Wiley. - 0094-2405. ; 29:4, s. 631-637
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In general, electron beams, from conventional accelerators using applicators with lead alloy inserts are not suitable for advanced conformal radiation therapy. However, interesting electron treatments have been demonstrated on a few advanced accelerators. These accelerators have been equipped with helium filled treatment heads and computer controlled MLCs that produce clinically useful energy modulated electron beams or mixed photon electron beams in an automated sequence. This study analyzes the characteristics of different MLC designs, curved and focused leaf ends in helium filled treatment heads, with respect to their effect on electron beams. In addition, this study analyzes the effects that different treatment head designs have on the output factor due to collimator scattering and shielding of secondary sources during treatment. The investigation of the different treatment head designs was performed with the Monte Carlo package BEAM and was verified by experimental methods. The results show that the difference between curved leaf ends and focused ends is negligible in most practical cases. The results also show the importance of scattering foil optimization in the optimization of parameters such as penumbra. virtual source position, and in the reduction of the output variation. In all cases, the experimental data verifies the calculations. (C) 2002 American Association of Physicists in Medicine.

  • High aspect ratio etching and characterization of 2D-photonic crystals in InP/InGaAsP/InP heterostructures
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Photonics. - : SPIE - International Society for Optical Engineering. - 0819451703 ; , s. 78-89
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the fabrication and characterization of 2D photonic crystals (PhCs) in InP/InGaAsP/InP heterostructures. It is demonstrated that Ar/C12 based chemically assisted ion beam etching (CAIBE) is a very promising method to obtain high aspect ratio etching of PhCs in the InP-based materials. With this process, it is possible to obtain PC-holes as deep as 3 microns even for feature (PhC-hole) sizes as small as 200-250 nm. The optical characteristics of the fabricated PhC-based elements/devices such as line-defect waveguides, in-plane resonant cavities and drop-filter based on contra-directional coupling will be reported. The devices were measured using end-fire coupling and the obtained results were simulated using the 2D finite difference time domain (FDTD) method including an effective loss-approximation. The etched PhC-waveguides show low transmission losses, less than 1 dB/100 mum. A quality factor of 400 for a 6 micron long cavity with 6-hole mirrors is obtained. Finally, drop-functionality in a PhC-based filter using contra-directional coupling is demonstrated.

  • Low-loss photonic-crystal and monolithic InP integration : Bands, bends, lasers, filters
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Photonic Crystal Materials and Devices II. - : SPIE - International Society for Optical Engineering. - 0819452688 ; , s. 119-128
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Practical realizations of 2D (planar) photonics crystal (PhC) are either on a membrane or etched through a conventional heterostructure. While fascinating objects can emerge from the first approach, only the latter approach lends itself to a progressive integration of more compact PhC's towards monolithic PICs based on InP. We describe in this talk the various aspects from technology to functions and devices, as emerged from the European collaboration "PCIC". The main technology tour de force is deep-etching with aspect ratio of about 10 and vertical sidewall, achieved by three techniques (CAIBE, ICP-RIE, ECR-RIE). The basic functions explored are bends, splitters/combiners, mirrors, tapers, and the devices are filters and lasers. At the end of the talk, I will emphasize some positive aspects of "broad" multimode PhC waveguides, in view of compact add-drop filtering action, notably.

  • Surface interactions in the complex between cytochrome f and the E43Q/D44N and E59K/E60Q plastocyanin double mutants as determined by (1)H-NMR chemical shift analysis
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Protein Science. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0961-8368 .- 1469-896X. ; 10:12, s. 2623-2626
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A combination of site-directed mutagenesis and NMR chemical shift perturbation analysis of backbone and side-chain protons has been used to characterize the transient complex of the photosynthetic redox proteins plastocyanin and cytochrome f. To elucidate the importance of charged residues on complex formation, the complex of cytochrome f and E43Q/D44N or E59K/E60Q spinach plastocyanin double mutants was studied by full analysis of the (1)H chemical shifts by use of two-dimensional homonuclear NMR spectra. Both mutants show a significant overall decrease in chemical shift perturbations compared with wild-type plastocyanin, in agreement with a large decrease in binding affinity. Qualitatively, the E43Q/D44N mutant showed a similar interaction surface as wild-type plastocyanin. The interaction surface in the E59K/E60Q mutant was distinctly different from wild type. It is concluded that all four charged residues contribute to the affinity and that residues E59 and E60 have an additional role in fine tuning the orientation of the proteins in the complex.
