  • Training for Evaluative Social Work and Social Care - Offers and Demands
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: [Host publication title missing].
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the last years evaluation has been on the agenda as a part of the discourse in social work and social services in Sweden. This demand on evaluation and the value of the social work is connected to the tough economic situation in the municipalities and their growing responsibility for the social welfare services. At the same time there are strivings to improve the quality of social work and the ongoing professionalization of social workers. This development can be seen as a move from authority based social work towards more knowledge based social work. In such a situation we can assume that there is a need for evaluation knowledge and evaluation capacity. What roles do the departments of social work education and the R&Dunits play for social work? Is evaluation an important and frequent topic? Supported by the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare1 we have “mapped” if and how the departments/schools of social work and the R&D-units offer courses on evaluation or support evaluative work in other ways. The purpose of the investigation was to “map” all educational activities aimed to develop knowledge and competence for evaluation, in the programs for social work at the universities/university colleges in Sweden and in the R&D- units linked to the social services. Our investigation was conducted during the year 2002 and reflects the situation at that time. In this article we summarize and discuss some of the results. Above all we discuss and try to explain the fact that only a minority of the students in social work (at al levels) meets evaluation in their education and those who meet evaluation – meet it in the most rudimentary way. We also discuss the fact that there are more activities (courses, training, support) for evaluation in the R&D-units, but they are not arranged in a focused way. We start by presenting results from the investigation of university training in evaluation and continue with results from the R&D-units. Finally we give some possible explanations to our findings.

  • Identification of transient glycosylation alterations of sialylated mucin oligosaccharides during infection by the rat intestinal parasite Nippostrongylus brasiliensis.
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: The Biochemical journal. - 0264-6021. ; 350 Pt 3, s. 805-14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The sialylation of the oligosaccharides from small-intestinal mucins during a 13-day infectious cycle was studied in Sprague-Dawley rats with the parasite Nippostrongylus brasiliensis. Sialic acid analysis and release, permethylation and analysis by GC-MS of the sialylated oligosaccharides isolated from the 'insoluble' mucin complex revealed a relative decrease (4-7-fold) of N-glycolylneuraminic acid compared with N-acetylneuraminic acid just before parasite expulsion. Northern blots showed that this effect was due to the decreased expression of a hydroxylase converting CMP-N-acetylneuraminic acid into CMP-N-glycolylneuraminic acid. Analysis of other rat strains showed that this parasite infection also caused the same effect in these animals. Detailed analysis of infected Sprague-Dawley rats revealed four sialylated oligosaccharides not found in the uninfected animals. These new oligosaccharides were characterized in detail and all shown to contain the trisaccharide epitope NeuAc/NeuGcalpha2-3(GalNAcbeta1-4)Galbeta1 (where NeuGc is N-glycolyl neuraminic acid). This epitope is similar to the Sd(a)- and Cad-type blood-group antigens and suggests that the infection causes the induction of a GalNAcbeta1-4 glycosyltransferase. This model for an intestinal infection suggests that the glycosylation of intestinal mucins is a dynamic process being modulated by the expression of specific enzymes during an infection process.

  • Knowledge spillovers and knowledge management
  • 2004
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • In an increasingly connected global marketplace, knowledge transfer occurs through both intra- and interorganizatioiial knowledge networks. The authors of this new collection of essays argue that while managing the internal knowledge base is a crucial factor hi a company's competitiveness, it's also important to recognize that most of the knowledge used by the majority of companies is developed externally. In this context, they discuss the function and impact of "knowledge spillovers," which occur when organizations are working on similar tilings and, because knowledge cannot be entirely contained, are benefiting from each other's research. The authors pay particular attention to the role that location plays in a company's ability to access knowledge.Concluding that "there are strong reasons to believe that spillover effects are geographically bounded," they propose that "it may often be of strategic importance to companies and their competitiveness to be represented hi the 'right' industrial clusters."The book's 17 chapters, whose authors represent an impressively international list of universities and research institutes, are divided into three sections, the first of which discusses knowledge spillovers, the second, issues tied to regional innovation systems, and the third, new thinking hi KM related to geography, emerging technologies and information logistics.WMe the authors offer this book both as "a base for future research and as a source of ideas for companies that need to develop their knowledge management strategies and policy-makers interested in formulating more efficient regional innovation policies," the tone and theoretical density of the material is clearly aimed more toward academics and researchers than those looking for practical advice.
