  • Biokombi Rya - slutrapporter från ingående delprojekt
  • 2007

  • Downstream passage of diadromous fish in Swedish rivers
  • 2009
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Downstream passage problems for diadromous fish are rarely addressed in regulated rivers in northern Europe. Some attempts to decrease the mortality among downstream moving fish are now tested in southern Sweden, ranging from the use of trash gates totesting of low-sloped fine-spaced racks. This presentation describes the efficiency of twosuch measures at hydroelectric facilities in the River Ätran. The targeted species were Atlantic salmon, anadromous brown trout and European eel. Smolt (N=66, 2007), kelt (N=20, 2007) and silver eels (N=170, 2007-2008) were radio-tagged and tracked inpassing the facilities. An open trash gate proved to have a very low efficiency for smolt (7%) and most individuals passed through the racks and turbines. The efficiency was intermediate for kelt (40%) and several individuals died on the trash racks or remained upstream until theend of the study. The route seeking time was limited for smolts, but substantial for kelts. Since no control groups were used the extent of the delays could not be quantified. The overall passage success was 50% for kelts and 85% for smolts, illustrating the need for a more efficient measure for kelts in particular. The passage for silvers eels of the two lower most hydroelectric plants (HEPs) in the River Ätran revealed a 28% passage success at HEP 2 (N=50), with a 23,5 m head and Francis turbines. The corresponding success for the control group released downstream ofthe HEP was 92% (N=50). The following year the old rack (20 mm / 43°) was replaced by a new rack (18 mm / 35°) with exits at the surface. With the new rack in place 80% of the eels released upstream were successfully diverted and caught, resulting in a totalsuccess of 90% (compared to 28% with the old rack). The success at HEP 1 was 76% (N=58), but no individuals entered the open trash gate. The success rate was somewhat uncertain because of the short distance to sea and the possibility for injured (but not dead) individuals to reach sea but not surviving in the long run

  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Chemistry - A European Journal. - : Wiley. - 0947-6539 .- 1521-3765. ; 13:18, s. 5300-5307
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The synthesis and physicochem. characterization of a series of polymethylene-1,w-bis(phosphocholines) with even-numbered chain lengths between 22 and 32 carbon atoms is described. Two new synthetic strategies for the prepn. of long-chain 1,wo-diols as hydrocarbon building blocks are presented. The temp.-dependent self-assembly of the single-chain bolaamphiphiles was investigated by cryo transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and Fourier transform IR spectroscopy (FTIR).

  • Outside the World : Cohesion and Deviation among Old Colony Mennonites in Bolivia
  • 2007
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study is about community maintenance and social cohesion among Old Colony Mennonites in Bolivia. The Old Colony Mennonites constitute a Christian minority that traces its origin to the European Anabaptist movement of the 16th century. To reach collective salvation they insist on preserving the Old Colony way of life and remaining separate from the “world”. Considering their unconventional lifestyle which implies rejection of modernity and adherence to the Ordnung, and which has caused a long tradition of migration, the Old Colony Mennonites’ ability to maintain commu-nity in the 21st century inevitably draws attention to the classical inquiry into the prac-tices and forces that make human societies cohere. Based on anthropological fieldwork, this study examines the Old Colony way of life departing from deviation and confor-mity in practice and thought, primarily from and at the margins of the community. Such a methodological perspective makes it possible to observe behaviour and modes of thinking that are difficult to detect in the Old Colony community, which is charac-terised by strong social control and demands on the individual to conform. Approach-ing community from a perspective of social practice, the study sheds light on different modalities of social cohesion, e.g., the emergence of social cohesion, the way it is re-produced and expressed and how it fortifies community. Several themes are discussed such as the construction and maintenance of community boundaries, religious influ-ence on conformity and deviation, the discrepancy between ethics and practice, and disobedience as a way of confirming rules. This work puts forth the idea that the col-lective dimension of the Old Colonists’ spiritual quest, i.e., to collectively attain salva-tion in the heavenly kingdom, reinforces the boundary between the Old Colony com-munity and the world. By examining their interaction with the outside world, this study also shows that the Old Colony Mennonites in Durango express and verify their principle of non-conformity to the “world” by accentuating boundaries and articulat-ing a relationship, rather than by striving for a non-relation.

  • Teaching Musical Expression : Effects of production and delivery of feedback by teacher vs. computer on rated feedback quality
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Music Education Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1461-3808 .- 1469-9893. ; 11:2, s. 175-191
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previous research has shown that a computer program may improve performers' abilities to express emotions through their performance. Yet performers seem reluctant to embrace this novel technology. In this study we explored possible reasons for these negative impressions. Eighty guitarists performed a piece of music to express various emotions, received feedback on their performances, and judged the quality of the feedback they received on rating scales. In a 2 x 2 between-subjects factorial design, we manipulated (a) the performers’ belief about whether the feedback was produced by a teacher or a computer program (feedback delivery) and (b) the feedback contents in terms of whether they were really produced by a teacher or a computer program (feedback production). Results revealed significant main effects of both production and delivery, but no interaction between the two. That is, the mere belief that the feedback derived from a teacher yielded higher quality ratings, but so did also feedback that did indeed derive from a teacher. While both types of feedback were rated as equally easy to understand, feedback from teachers was rated as more detailed. Additional analyses revealed that teacher-produced feedback was appreciated because it offered encouragement, examples, and explanations. Implications for computer applications in music education are discussed.

  • Analysis of Wires Inside a Reverberation Chamber Using the Method of Moments Combined with Spectral Domain Techniques and Asymptotic Extraction
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: European Conference on Antennas and Propagation: EuCAP 2006; Nice; France; 6 November 2006 through 10 November 2006. - : IEEE. - 0379-6566. - 9290929375 ; 626 SP
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we will present a Method of Moments (MoM) code that can be used for analyzing PEC objects in a Reverberation Chamber (RC). The RC is treated as a rectangular cavity, and the Green's function of it is constructed by using planar wave spectral domain techniques and imaging combined with periodic boundary conditions. Several validation cases based on comparisons with other computer codes are also presented.
