  • Time course of postnatal motor development in ferrets: ontogenetic and comparative perspectives.
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Behavioural Brain Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 0166-4328. ; 158:2, s. 231-242
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We assess relative time courses of motor development in ferrets and rats and evaluate ferrets as experimental animals for studies of motor development. Motor behaviour of ferret pups was characterized in daily sessions from postnatal day (P) 2 to P63. Observations concerning rotational locomotion ('pivoting'), crawling, walking, upright standing ('rearing') and walking on a narrow path; righting on a surface, in mid-air and on an inclined plane ('geotaxis') were quantified in detail and compared with published data on rat motor development. Besides providing a comprehensive characterization of ferret motor development, our results demonstrate that relative time courses of emergence of motor skills in ferrets and rats are highly similar despite substantially different duration of postnatal periods. The relationship between species was determined by linear regression analysis of an x-y-plot of postnatal ages (y: ferret days; x: rat days) corresponding to given levels of performance of specific skills. The model equation y = 2.46x-4.18 represents the conversion between time courses of rat and ferret motor development. Remarkably, the model explained 81% of data variance (r2 = 0.81) and should hence be useful for translation of motor developmental data between ferret and rat and for comparisons between motor and other functions in ferrets. The highly conserved relative time course also has more general implications for the understanding of comparative aspects of development. In addition, the high reproducibility of data within the present study underscores the suitability of the ferret as an experimental animal for studies of motor development.

  • Increased Plasma Soluble Interleukin-2 Receptor Alpha Levels in Patients With Long-Term Type 1 Diabetes With Vascular Complications Associated With IL2RA and PTPN2 Gene Polymorphisms
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Endocrinology. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 1664-2392. ; 11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is largely considered an autoimmune disease leading to the destruction of insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells. Further, patients with T1D have 3-4-fold increased risk of developing micro- and macrovascular complications. However, the contribution of immune-related factors contributing to these diabetes complications are poorly understood. Individuals with long-term T1D who do not progress to vascular complications offer a great potential to evaluate end-organ protection. The aim of the present study was to investigate the association of inflammatory protein levels with vascular complications (retinopathy, nephropathy, cardiovascular disease) in individuals with long-term T1D compared to individuals who rapidly progressed to complications. We studied a panel of inflammatory markers in plasma of patients with long-term T1D with (n = 81 and 26) and without (n = 313 and 25) vascular complications from two cross-sectional Scandinavian cohorts (PROLONG and DIALONG) using Luminex technology. A subset of PROLONG individuals (n = 61) was screened for circulating immune cells using multicolor flow cytometry. We found that elevated plasma levels of soluble interleukin-2 receptor alpha (sIL-2R) were positively associated with the complication phenotype. Risk carriers of polymorphisms in the IL2RA and PTPN2 gene region had elevated plasma levels of sIL-2R. In addition, cell surface marker analysis revealed a shift from naive to effector T cells in T1D individuals with vascular complications as compared to those without. In contrast, no difference between the groups was observed either in IL-2R cell surface expression or in regulatory T cell population size. In conclusion, our data indicates that IL2RA and PTPN2 gene variants might increase the risk of developing vascular complications in people with T1D, by affecting sIL-2R plasma levels and potentially lowering T cell responsiveness. Thus, elevated sIL-2R plasma levels may serve as a biomarker in monitoring the risk for developing diabetic complications and thereby improve patient care.

  • Environmental issues in the media : students' perceptions in the three Nordic-Baltic countries
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Teacher Education for Sustainability. - 1691-4147 .- 1691-5534. ; 16:1, s. 32-53
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The media, as a source of information, is supposed to have a significant role in effecting people's environmental knowledge and attitudes. The purpose of this study was to find students' perceptions of environmental issues as presented in the media and how students in Finland, Lithuania and Sweden used these media sources in the matters related to environmental issues. The most important source of environmental knowledge was found to be the Internet, followed by newspapers, television, school and education. In their own lives, students discussed environmental issues every day and, to some extent, in social media, discussion forums and blogs. In Finland, newspapers represented the most important source of environmental knowledge; in Lithuania, environmental organisations were the most prevalent, and, in Sweden, it was in a school or educational context. Based on these results, it was concluded that, in order to reach both genders of students in different countries and to more greatly benefit from all sources of information, a variety of media should be used in education for sustainability.

  • Predicting return to work after subarachnoid hemorrhage using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA)
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Acta Neurochirurgica. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0001-6268 .- 0942-0940. ; 158:2, s. 233-239
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Returning to work is a major issue for patients having had an aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). It is important, at an early stage, to identify the patients that are unlikely to return to work. The objective of this study was to assess the predictive value of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) at 6 months after ictus on return to work at 12 months. In this prospective study were 96 patients with SAH included in the acute phase. Cognitive functions were assessed at 6 months using the MoCA and return to work at 12 months. The predictive value of MoCA on return to work was analyzed using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve as well as logistic regression. Of those that had work before the SAH, 52 % were working at 12 months after the ictus. These patients had scored significantly better on MoCA at 6 months (p = 0.01). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.75. By using a cut-off on MoCA of < 27, 68 % of the patients could be correctly classified as returned/not returned to work. Adding data from the acute phase to the MoCA in a logistic regression model increased the percentage of patients correctly classified as returned/not returned to work by 2 %. Returning to work is a major issue for SAH patients. It is important to identify factors that may interfere with a patient's ability to return to work, and address these issues appropriately. In our study, estimating cognitive functions at 6 months after SAH using the MoCA alone allowed us to predict return to work correctly in 68 % of the cases. We feel that this provides useful information in planning rehabilitation, but that other post-SAH symptoms have to be considered as well.
