  • Sound conformance testing for cyber-physical systems : Theory and implementation
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Science of Computer Programming. - Amsterdam : ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV. - 0167-6423 .- 1872-7964. ; 162, s. 35-54
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Conformance testing is a formal and structured approach to verifying system correctness. We propose a conformance testing algorithm for cyber-physical systems, based on the notion of hybrid conformance by Abbas and Fainekos. We show how the dynamics of system specification and the sampling rate play an essential role in making sound verdicts. We specify and prove error bounds that lead to sound test-suites for a given specification and a given sampling rate. We use reachability analysis to find such bounds and implement the proposed approach using the CORA toolbox in Matlab. We apply the implemented approach on a case study from the automotive domain.

  • Accelerating VNF-based Deep Packet Inspection with the use of GPUs
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 2018 20TH ANNIVERSARY INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON TRANSPARENT OPTICAL NETWORKS (ICTON). - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 9781538666050
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Network Function Virtualization (NFV) replaces the hardware that supports packet processing in network operation from specific-by general-purpose ones, reducing costs and bringing more flexibility and agility to the network operation. However, this shift can cause performance losses due to the non-optimal packet processing capabilities of the general-purpose hardware. Moreover, supporting the line rate of optical network channels with Virtualized Network Functions (VNFs) is a challenging task. This work analyzes the benefits of using Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) to support the execution of a Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) VNF towards supporting the line rate of an optical channel. The use of GPUs in VNFs has a great potential to increase throughput, but the delay incurred might be an issue for some functions. Our simulation was performed using an Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) which performs DPI deployed as a VNF under real-world traffic scaled to high bit rates. Results show that the packet processing speedup achieved by using GPUs can reach up to 19 times, at the expense of a higher packet delay.

  • Lipoprotein lipase activity and mass, apolipoprotein C-II mass and polymorphisms of apolipoproteins E and A5 in subjects with prior acute hypertriglyceridaemic pancreatitis
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: BMC Gastroenterology. - 1471-230X. ; 9, s. 46-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Severe hypertriglyceridaemia due to chylomicronemia may trigger an acute pancreatitis. However, the basic underlying mechanism is usually not well understood. We decided to analyze some proteins involved in the catabolism of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins in patients with severe hypertriglyceridaemia. METHODS: Twenty-four survivors of acute hypertriglyceridaemic pancreatitis (cases) and 31 patients with severe hypertriglyceridaemia (controls) were included. Clinical and anthropometrical data, chylomicronaemia, lipoprotein profile, postheparin lipoprotein lipase mass and activity, hepatic lipase activity, apolipoprotein C II and CIII mass, apo E and A5 polymorphisms were assessed. RESULTS: Only five cases were found to have LPL mass and activity deficiency, all of them thin and having the first episode in childhood. No cases had apolipoprotein CII deficiency. No significant differences were found between the non-deficient LPL cases and the controls in terms of obesity, diabetes, alcohol consumption, drug therapy, gender distribution, evidence of fasting chylomicronaemia, lipid levels, LPL activity and mass, hepatic lipase activity, CII and CIII mass or apo E polymorphisms. However, the SNP S19W of apo A5 tended to be more prevalent in cases than controls (40% vs. 23%, NS). CONCLUSION: Primary defects in LPL and C-II are rare in survivors of acute hypertriglyceridaemic pancreatitis; lipase activity measurements should be restricted to those having their first episode during childhood.

  • A 2D markerless gait analysis protocol to estimate the sagittal joint kinematics of children with cerebral palsy
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 2019 IEEE 23RD INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON CONSUMER TECHNOLOGIES (ISCT). - : IEEE. - 9781728135700 ; , s. 192-196
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The quantitative analysis of human movement provides a deep understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying locomotion. The traditional marker-based stereo-photogrammetric systems and clinical protocols for motion analysis, although very accurate, have a number of disadvantages that limit their use to large clinical facilities. Among the disadvantages is the use of markers on the body, which can make the patient uneasy, especially children with cerebral palsy. To overcome the limitations of the marker-based stereophotogrammetry and to guarantee accuracy, reproducibility and usability of the measurement, a new markerless protocol is introduced, which, estimates the lower limb sagittal joint kinematics from RGB video images combined with measurements from an infrared depth (D) sensor. The validity of the markerless protocol is demonstrated by comparing the estimates obtained, with those resulting from the application of a common protocol applied to marker-based measurements. The joint kinematics patterns obtained from the ML protocol and the one of reference showed a good agreement after removing the angular offsets with RMSD values between 3.5 and 5 degrees for all joints and R values between 0.8 and 1. The interpretation of the differences found in this study should be treated carefully since they are the results not only of different measurement systems but also of different protocols (2D vs 3D). The proposed protocol for the estimation of the 2D joint kinematics of the lower limbs from RGB-D sensor data is a promising low-cost and simple solution for monitoring children with cerebral palsy.

  • Effect of a Daily Dose of Snacks Containing Maltitol or Stevia rebaudiana as Sweeteners in High Caries Risk Schoolchildren. A Double-blind RCT Study
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Oral Health & Preventive Dentistry. - 1602-1622. ; 17:6, s. 515-522
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: To evaluate the effect of sugar-free snacks on caries-related factors in 6- to 9-year-old schoolchildren. Materials and Methods: Two hundred seventy-one children at risk for caries as measured through the Cariogram were randomly assigned to three groups consuming twice-daily snacks containing Stevia, maltitol or sugar for 42 days. Parents filled out a standardised questionnaire regarding personal, medical and oral behavioural information. Bleeding on probing, plaque pH and salivary mutans streptococchi (MS) and lactobacilli (LB) were assessed at baseline (t(0)), 42 days of snack use (t(1)) and 120 days after the end of use (t(2)). The Cariogram calculation was repeated at t(1). Treatment effects were estimated using linear mixed-effects regression models. Results: At t(2), a decrease in cariogenic bacteria (MS X-2 = 8.01, p < 0.01 and LB X-2 = 4.60, p = 0.03) and an increase of the minimum pH (F = 4.48, p < 0.01), maximum pH (F = 2.88 p < 0.01) and pH drop (F = 2.95 p < 0.01) was recorded in the Stevia group compared to baseline. In the maltitol group, an improvement effect was noted: LB concentration decreased (p = 0.04) and maximum pH (F = 3.16 p < 0.01) increased. Subjects classified by the Cariogram as have a low probability of developing caries increased in the Stevia and maltitol groups (X-(4)(2) = 25.44, p < 0.01, C*sV = 0.38 and X-(4)(2) = 12.85, p = 0.01, C*sV = 0.27, respectively). Regression analysis underlines the effect of Stevia snacks on the cariogenic microflora, mainly on MS and plaque pH variations. Conclusion: The short-term administration of Stevia or maltitol snacks improves some important factors related to caries. This preventive strategy might be an additional means of combatting this common childhood disease.

  • The strip method and the microelectrode technique in assessing dental plaque pH
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Minerva Stomatologica. - 1827-174X. ; 66:6, s. 241-247
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The pH strip method has been proposed for use in a clinical setting for the evaluation of dental plaque pH. The aim of this in-vivo study was to compare the reliability of the pH-indicator strip method to the microelectrode technique in plaque pH measurement. METHODS: 136 subjects (7-9 years) were enrolled and, for each subject, measurements of plaque pH were made at two interproximal sites; a total of 272 sites were analyzed. Plaque pH was assessed in triplicate using pH-indicator strips (pH range: 4.0-7.0) and an iridium microelectrode with a diameter of 0.1 mm. The caries status of 544 proximal surfaces between two primary molars, in proximity at the plaque pH sites, was assessed. All measurements were performed before and 2, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 30 minutes after a mouth rinse with water solution of sucrose (10%). One-way ANOVA was performed to analyze statistically significant differences between the two techniques. Instrument reliability was measured by assessing the intraclass correlation coefficient. RESULTS: Comparable, not statistically significant pH values (P values range from 0.98 to 1.00) were obtained by the two methods for AUC5 , AUC62, maximum pH fall and minimum pH. High intraclass coefficients were recorded (Pearson's r 0.96, Yule's Q 0.99), implying an almost perfect association when the measurements were grouped as a carious lesion being present or not on the surface near the site of measurement.

  • Pelvic trauma : WSES classification and guidelines
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: World Journal of Emergency Surgery. - London, United Kingdom : BioMed Central (BMC). - 1749-7922. ; 12:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Complex pelvic injuries are among the most dangerous and deadly trauma related lesions. Different classification systems exist, some are based on the mechanism of injury, some on anatomic patterns and some are focusing on the resulting instability requiring operative fixation. The optimal treatment strategy, however, should keep into consideration the hemodynamic status, the anatomic impairment of pelvic ring function and the associated injuries. The management of pelvic trauma patients aims definitively to restore the homeostasis and the normal physiopathology associated to the mechanical stability of the pelvic ring. Thus the management of pelvic trauma must be multidisciplinary and should be ultimately based on the physiology of the patient and the anatomy of the injury. This paper presents the World Society of Emergency Surgery (WSES) classification of pelvic trauma and the management Guidelines.

  • Splenic trauma : WSES classification and guidelines for adult and pediatric patients
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: World Journal of Emergency Surgery. - : BioMed Central (BMC). - 1749-7922. ; 12
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Spleen injuries are among the most frequent trauma-related injuries. At present, they are classified according to the anatomy of the injury. The optimal treatment strategy, however, should keep into consideration the hemodynamic status, the anatomic derangement, and the associated injuries. The management of splenic trauma patients aims to restore the homeostasis and the normal physiopathology especially considering the modern tools for bleeding management. Thus, the management of splenic trauma should be ultimately multidisciplinary and based on the physiology of the patient, the anatomy of the injury, and the associated lesions. Lastly, as the management of adults and children must be different, children should always be treated in dedicated pediatric trauma centers. In fact, the vast majority of pediatric patients with blunt splenic trauma can be managed non-operatively. This paper presents the World Society of Emergency Surgery (WSES) classification of splenic trauma and the management guidelines.
