  • Time for children : a study of parents' time allocation
  • 2001
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Conventional models of equilibrium unemployment typically imply that proportional taxes on labor earnings are neutral with respect to unemployment as long as the tax does not affect the replacement rate provided by unemployment insurance, i.e., unemployment benefits relative to after-tax earnings. When home production is an option, the conventional results may no longer hold. This paper uses a search equilibrium model with home production to examine the employment and welfare implications of labor taxes. The employment effect of a rise in a proportional tax is found to be negative for sufficiently low replacement rates, whereas it is ambiguous for moderate and high replacement rates. Numerical calibrations of the model indicate that employment generally falls when proportional labor taxes are raised. Progressive labor taxes increase labor market tightness but have ambiguous effects on search effort and employment. The numerical calibrations indicate positive employment effects.

  • Micro simulation ; a tool for economic analysis
  • 2001
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Micro simulation involves modeling the behavior of individuals and other decision units taking into account the effects of policy parameters such as tax rates, eligibility rules for benefits and subsidies and compensation rates in the social security system. The model is simulated to analyze the impact of policy changes not only on mean behavior but also on the entire distribution of target variables. Micro simulation models have thus, for instance, been used to analyze how changes in the income taxes influence the tails of the income distribution (the incidence of poverty). Micro simulation complements a more traditional economic analysis both of which have pros and cons. Micro simulation is demanding in terms of modeling effort, data requirements and computer capacity. The issues of statistical inference related to micro simulation are in principle no different from those in econometric modeling generally. In practice the large scale and complex structure of a typical micro simulation model and the shortage of good micro data raise inference issues of particular relevance for micro simulation such as the choice of estimation criteria, calibration to benchmarks and model validation. Some of these issues are discussed in this paper.

  • On household wealth trends in Sweden over the 1990s
  • 2003
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Influenced by a major tax reform in the beginning of the 1990s and by the exceptional boom in the stock market at the end of this decade the level as well as the inequality of the wealth of Swedish households have increased. The large baby-boom cohorts of the 1940s have been successful in accumulating wealth and they also have large claims on the public pension system. The implicit wealth in the form of these claims dominates private wealth in most Swedish households, and in this paper it is argued that private life-cycle savings have been small in Sweden. Most of these savings have been done though the public pension systems. However, concern about the future viability of the pension systems has probably increased private life-cycle savings in the 1990s.

  • On the wealth dynamics of Swedish families 1984-1998
  • 2001
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper focuses on three issues. First, it analyses the increasing inequality of wealth in Sweden in terms of percentile age and birth cohort differences. Second, it discusses mobility of wealth as a function of age, length of the transition period, the magnitude of quantile differences, and a time trend. The third theme is the relative importance of bequests. Estimates are given of their share of total net worth, and of their contribution to the inequality and mobility of wealth.
