  • Evaluation of electrogustometry and the filter paper disc method for taste assessment
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Acta Oto-Laryngologica. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0001-6489 .- 1651-2251. ; 131:5, s. 488-493
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Conclusion:The results indicate that electrogustometry and the filter paper disc method are reliable methods to measure taste with a high degree of reproducibility. Objectives: To thoroughly evaluate the reliability of electrogustometry and the filter paper disc method for taste assessments.Methods:Thirty-nine healthy test persons without any history of chronic middle ear disease, aged between 27 and 62 years, were recruited. In all, 772 electrogustometry and 30 filter paper disc assessments were made. A nerve decay test was performed, with measures taken before and after eating sweet, sour, bitter, salt, a mild or spicy meal, after smoking, and after taking Swedish tobacco snuff ('snus'), as well as before and after local anesthesia of the tongue. Measurements were performed on 5 consecutive days and repeatedly during 1 day. The correlation between electrogustometry and the filter paper disc method was also studied. Results:The results indicate that electrogustometry and the filter paper disc method are reliable methods to measure taste with a high degree of reproducibility. The only actions causing significant changes in the electrogustometry readings were eating bitter a substance and having local anesthesia of the tongue. The correlation between the methods was statistically significant except for the bitter flavor, where the correlation was just below the level of significance.

  • Med kant av guld och silver... : En studie av knypplade bårder och uddar av metall 1550-1640
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    •  The study examines bobbin-made borders and edgings in gold and silver during the period 1550-1640. The aim of the thesis is to study the technique of bobbin made lace and to place it in a historical, social and economic context. This is done by describing and analyzing samples of bobbin made lace in gold and silver manufactured during the period 1550-1640 and giving a picture of production, procurement, use and reuse of bobbin made lace. The divided aim implies that the thesis has two paths. The earlier chapters investigate production, dealing with equipment, pattern books, techniques and patterns. The analysis and interpretation has its anchorage in deeply established practical knowledge and experience of bobbin lace making. The later chapters, dealing with procurement, use and reuse, are based on studies of portrait archives and preserved artefacts. The study is built on object-based and archival research alongside portrait studies.  The primary sources are bobbin-made borders and edgings preserved on ecclesiastical textiles in Sweden, documentation from the Swedish Royal accounts, and dress and portraits found in European collections.

  • Evaluating Interaction with Mobile Devices in Mobile Inquiry-Based Learning
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: WMUTE '12 Proceedings of the 2012 IEEE Seventh International Conference on Wireless, Mobile and Ubiquitous Technology in Education. - Washington, DC, USA : IEEE Computer Society. - 9780769546629 ; , s. 92-96
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We evaluate to what extent students are interacting with mobile devices in one of four ways intended in the design of a mobile learning activity. Video data from one class of fifth grade students were analyzed using a model of four different types of interaction. The evaluation shows that the students interacted with the devices in the ways intended in design 64% of the time. The contribution is an approach for translating learning goals to interaction design goals in mobile learning research. We conclude that this approach can be of value in designing and evaluating interaction with mobile devices for an entire mobile learning activity.

  • Six ways of interacting with mobile devices in mobile inquiry-based learning
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the IADIS International Conference Mobile Learning 2012. - 9789728939663 ; , s. 67-74
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We design a mobile learning activity with the aim of supporting inquiry-based learning and analyze it to understand how students interact with mobile devices. For analysis we use a model of contextual human-technology interaction, which is an expansion of an older model by Buxton (1995). Our research question is: How can student interaction in a mobile learning activity be described in the model of contextual human-technology interaction? We approach this question by analyzing an eight minute long video clip of a group of three students using mobile devices for calculating the distribution of trees in a forest area. We categorize the results in six different ways of interacting with technology according to the model. The analysis shows how the model of contextual human-technology interaction can be used for describing placement of technology in mobile learning activities when students are mobile in and between contexts relevant for their learning goals.

  • Tools for Designing Mobile Interaction with the Physical Environment in Outdoor Lessons
  • 2013
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Mobile technologies are increasingly being used to support students in outdoor learning activities. For instance, in a growing number of research projects, smartphones and positioning technologies are being used to support students in exploring the natural environment. However, previous research has identified challenges with the introduction of mobile technology into outdoor lessons. One fundamental challenge is that interaction with mobile technology in outdoor lessons may distract students from interacting with the physical environment. In this thesis this challenge is approached from the perspective of human-computer interaction, guided by the following research question: How can we design, evaluate, and reflect on mobile technology for interacting with the physical environment in outdoor lessons? The thesis presents four design cases on outdoor geometry and biology lessons, which act as probes for developing conceptual design tools. The design cases were developed through a concept-driven design approach and evaluated on field tests with primary school students. Future workshop and Interaction analysis were the main methods used. The results of the field tests suggest that mobile technology needs to be designed to orientate students in their interaction with the physical environment. In line with the concept-driven design approach, the thesis proposes three design tools. The design tools proposed are: Design guidelines that are specific enough for guiding the design of mobile technology for outdoor lessons, a Design model for designing and evaluating mobile technology for outdoor lessons, and Design concepts for reflecting on the placement of mobile technology in outdoor lessons. The design tools are proposed as tools for researchers and designers to take the challenge of distraction into account in designing mobile technology for outdoor lessons.

  • Using smartphones and QR codes for supporting students in exploring tree species
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Scaling up Learning for Sustained Impact. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 9783642408137 ; , s. 436-441
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Smartphones are increasingly being used on field trips to support students in exploring the natural world. In this paper we present a design and analysis of an inquiry-based learning field trip for primary school students. One problem for design is how to make use of smartphones to support, rather than distract, students in interacting with the physical environment. We approach this problem by comparing two alternative designs, where students use smartphones for identifying tree species either by using an identification instrument or by reading a text description. The results show that students made use of the instrument for identification, QR codes, for identifying tree species and made use of the text descriptions for searching for tree species. In this sense, QR codes, connecting contextual information on smartphones to the physical environment, work as a learning tool that may be used for orienting students in their interaction with the physical environment.

  • Use of Scandinavian Moist Smokeless Tobacco (Snus) and the Risk of Atrial Fibrillation
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Epidemiology. - 1044-3983 .- 1531-5487. ; 25:6, s. 872-876
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Snus is a smokeless tobacco product, widely used among Swedish men and increasingly so elsewhere. There is debate as to whether snus is an acceptable "harm-reduction" tobacco product. Since snus use delivers a dose of nicotine equivalent to cigarettes, and has been implicated in cardiac arrhythmia because of associations with sudden cardiovascular death, a relation with atrial fibrillation is plausible and important to investigate.METHODS:: To assess the relation between use of snus and risk of atrial fibrillation, we carried out a pooled analysis of 7 prospective Swedish cohort studies. In total, 274,882 men, recruited between 1978 and 2004, were followed via the National Patient Register for atrial fibrillation. Primary analyses were restricted to 127,907 never-smokers. Relative risks were estimated using Cox proportional hazard regression.RESULTS:: The prevalence of snus use was 25% among never-smokers. During follow-up, 3,069 cases of atrial fibrillation were identified. The pooled relative risk of atrial fibrillation was 1.07 (95% confidence interval = 0.97-1.19) in current snus users, compared with nonusers.CONCLUSION:: Findings from this large national pooling project indicate that snus use is unlikely to confer any important increase in risk of atrial fibrillation.

  • Direct Imaging of Atomic Scale Structure and Electronic Properties of GaAs Wurtzite and Zinc Blende Nanowire Surfaces.
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Nano Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1530-6992 .- 1530-6984. ; 13:9, s. 4492-4498
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy we study the atomic scale geometry and electronic structure of GaAs nanowires exhibiting controlled axial stacking of wurtzite (Wz) and zinc blende (Zb) crystal segments. We find that the nonpolar low-index surfaces {110}, {101̅0}, and {112̅0} are unreconstructed, unpinned, and without states in the band gap region. Direct comparison between Wz and Zb GaAs reveal a type-II band alignment and a Wz GaAs band gap of 1.52 eV.

  • Electronic and Structural Differences between Wurtzite and Zinc Blende InAs Nanowire Surfaces: Experiment and Theory
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: ACS Nano. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1936-086X .- 1936-0851. ; 8:12, s. 12346-12355
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We determine the detailed differences in geometry and band structure between wurtzite (Wz) and zinc blende (Zb) InAs nanowire (NW) surfaces using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and photoemission electron microscopy. By establishing unreconstructed and defect-free surface facets for both Wz and Zb, we can reliably measure differences between valence and conduction band edges, the local vacuum levels, and geometric relaxations to the few-millielectronvolt and few-picometer levels, respectively. Surface and bulk density functional theory calculations agree well with the experimental findings and are used to interpret the results, allowing us to obtain information on both surface and bulk electronic structure. We can thus exclude several previously proposed explanations for the observed differences in conductivity of Wz-Zb NW devices. Instead, fundamental structural differences at the atomic scale and nanoscale that we observed between NW surface facets can explain the device behavior.

  • Sustainable production Research : Awareness, Measures and Development
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: OIDA International Journal of Sustainable Development. - 1923-6654 .- 1923-6662. ; 4:11, s. 95-104
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper takes its standpoint in the hypothesis that awareness of sustainability is the key to create sustainable products, and that this awareness begins already at research level. It describes the development and follow-up of a method for increasing sustainability awareness in sustainable production research. Several activities were carried out to increase the awareness. Firstly) workshops with researchers and industry on sustainability. Secondly) development of measures based on literature and interviews with researchers. Thirdly) monitoring of awareness through concept maps. Progress was evaluated by comparing the awareness of the population when the project started in 2010, and then again in 2011. The results show that the participants had shifted their view from primary emphasizing technology towards a more balanced view of sustainability where social aspects were more often taken into consideration. According to the concept maps methodology, sustainability awareness in the population increased with 25%.
