  • Conditional cooperation on three continents
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Economics Letters. - : Elsevier BV. - 0165-1765. ; 101:3, s. 175-178
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We show in a public goods experiment on three continents that conditional cooperation is a universal behavioral regularity. Yet, the number of conditional cooperators and the extent of conditional cooperation are much higher in the United States than anywhere else.

  • Does stake size matter for cooperation and punishment?
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Economics Letters. - : Elsevier BV. - 0165-1765. ; 99:3, s. 508-511
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effects of stake size on cooperation and punishment are investigated using a public goods experiment. We find that an increase in stake size does neither significantly affect cooperation nor the level of punishment.

  • Social Background, Cooperative Behavior, and Norm Enforcement
  • 2009
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Studies have shown that there are differences in cooperative behavior across countries. Furthermore, differences in the use and the reaction on the introduction of a norm enforcement mechansism have been documented in cross-cultural studies, recently. We present data which prove that stark differences in both dimensions can exist even within the same town. For this end, a unique data set was created, based on public goods experiments conducted in South Africa. Most of the group differences can, however, be explained by variables accounting for social capital and social environment, such as trust or household violence.

  • Gender pairing and bargaining - Beware the same sex!
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Experimental Economics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1386-4157 .- 1573-6938. ; 12:3, s. 318-331
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the influence of gender and gender pairing on economic decision making in an experimental two-person bargaining game where the other party’s gender is known to both actors. We find that (1) gender per se has no significant effect on behavior, whereas (2) gender pairing systematically affects behavior. In particular, we observe much more competition and retaliation and, thus, lower efficiency when the bargaining partners have the same gender than when they have the opposite gender. These findings are consistent with predictions from evolutionary psychology. Implications of our results for real-world organizations are discussed.

  • Individuals and teams in auctions
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Oxford Economic Papers. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0030-7653 .- 1464-3812. ; 61:2, s. 380-394
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Experimental studies on bidding in auctions have so far relied on individual bidders, even though teams are often involved in real auctions. We examine the bidding behaviour of individuals and teams. Our experimental results show that teams stay longer in an (ascending sealed-bid English) auction and pay significantly higher prices than individuals. Consequently, teams make smaller profits and suffer more often from the winner's curse. The auction's efficiency is nevertheless higher with teams, since bidders with the highest valuation are more likely to win the auction when teams bid. We relate our findings to the European UMTS-spectrum auctions.
