  • General thoughts of death and mortality : findings from the Komo-Ise cohort, Japan.
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Epidemiology and Psychiatric Sciences. - : Cambridge University Press. - 2045-7960 .- 2045-7979. ; 28:6, s. 662-669
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AimsDeath ideation (thinking about/wishing for one's own death, thinking that one would be better off dead) is linked to an increased mortality risk. However, comparatively little is known about more general thoughts of death (GTOD) where no wish to die or life value is expressed. This study examined whether GTOD predicted mortality in a community-based cohort of older adults.METHODS: Data came from the Komo-Ise cohort study in Gunma prefecture, Japan. The analytic sample comprised 8208 individuals (average age 61.3 (range 47-77)) who were asked in wave 2 of the study in 2000 if they had 'Thought about death more than usual, either your own, someone else's or death in general?' in the past 2 weeks. Death data were obtained from the municipal resident registration file. Cox proportional hazards regression analysis was used to examine associations.RESULTS: During the follow-up period (2000-2008), there were 672 deaths. In a model adjusted for baseline covariates, GTOD were significantly associated with all-cause mortality (hazards ratio 1.66, 95% confidence interval 1.20-2.29). Stratified analyses showed an association between GTOD and mortality in men, older subjects (⩾70 years), married individuals and those with higher social support.CONCLUSIONS: GTOD are associated with an increased mortality risk among older citizens in Japan. Research is now needed to determine the factors underlying this association and assess the clinical relevance of screening for GTOD in older individuals.

  • On the use of CR-39 PNTD with AFM analysis in measuring proton-induced target fragmentation particles
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research, Section B: Beam Interactions with Materials and Atoms. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-583X. ; 349, s. 163-168
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In addition to energy loss by ionization process, protons of energy >similar to 50 MeV, such as those used in proton radiotherapy, can undergo nuclear interactions with nuclei of Z > 1, resulting in the production, of short range (<20 gm), high-LET (linear energy transfer) target fragment particles. One of the few methods to detect these short-range particles is by means of CR-39 plastic nuclear track detector (PNTD) analyzed with an atomic force microscope (AFM). However, due to the LET-dependent angular sensitivity of CR-39 PNTD, multiple detectors exposed at a range of incident angles to the primary proton beam, must be analyzed in order to accurately determine the LET spectrum, absorbed dose and dose equivalent. The LET spectrum of 160 MeV proton-induced secondary particles was experimentally measured with CR-39 PNTDs, which were exposed at six different incident angles to take into account the intrinsic sensitivity of the critical angle for track registration. The irradiated detectors were chemically processed to remove a 1 gm thick volume of CR-39 PNTD. The measured LET range of short range tracks was from 15 key/mu m up to 1.5 MeV/mu m. The absorbed dose contribution (D-s/D-p) from secondary particles to primary proton dose was similar to 1%, while the dose equivalent contribution (H-s/D-p) was found to be similar to 20%. Analysis of CR-39 PNTD by AFM yielded similar to 60% higher value for absorbed dose compared to standard optical microscopy analysis.

  • A substellar companion to Pleiades HII 3441
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japan. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0004-6264 .- 2053-051X. ; 68:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We find a new substellar companion to the Pleiades member star, Pleiades HII 3441, using the Subaru telescope with adaptive optics. The discovery is made as part of the high-contrast imaging survey to search for planetary-mass and substellar companions in the Pleiades and young moving groups. The companion has a projected separation of 0.'' 49 +/- 0.'' 02 (66 +/- 2 au) and a mass of 68 +/- 5 M-J based on three observations in the J-, H-, and K-s-bands. The spectral type is estimated to be M7 (similar to 2700 K), and thus no methane absorption is detected in the H band. Our Pleiades observations result in the detection of two substellar companions including one previously reported among 20 observed Pleiades stars, and indicate that the fraction of substellar companions in the Pleiades is about 10.0(-8.8)(+26.1)%. This is consistent with multiplicity studies of both the Pleiades stars and other open clusters.

  • Effects of different periods of rapid weight loss on dehydration and oxidative stress
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Archives of Budo. - 1643-8698. ; 14, s. 319-327
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and Study Aim: Many athletes will lose weight 5% or more within 7 days. Many reports have been published on the negative health effects of rapid weight loss (RWL) in wrestlers. This study aim was the effects of different periods of RWL on dehydration state and oxidative stress. Materials and Methods: Participants were nine male collegiate wrestlers who reduce their body mass by 5% within short period in randomized order using the same methods. They have experienced 1-day, 3-days and 7-days) weight loss separated by more than 4 weeks. All participants reduced 5% of their body mass in all trials. Following the weight loss, they tried to regain all of their lost weight with an ad libitum diet for 14 h. Body composition and biochemical variables were measured at baseline and immediately after weight loss and weight regain. Results: There were no statistically significant differences in hematocrit, serum sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium, osmotic pressure, and antidiuretic hormone. For plasma aldosterone concentrations and plasma d-ROMs concentrations, two-way analysis of variance revealed the main effect of time (p<0.05). RWL (loss of 5% of body weight within 7 days) is surmised to have increased oxidative stress via dehydration and elevated levels of aldosterone. Conclusions: Although different weight loss periods did not yield any changes, RWL of 5% of body weight was suggested to increase oxidative stress. It is necessary to study the influence of weight loss cycling on athlete's disease risk in the future.

  • Airborne pollen and suicide mortality in Tokyo, 2001–2011
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Environmental Research. - : Academic Press. - 0013-9351 .- 1096-0953. ; 155, s. 134-140
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Prior research has indicated that pollen might be linked to suicide mortality although the few studies that have been undertaken to date have produced conflicting findings and been limited to Western settings. This study examined the association between the level of airborne pollen and suicide mortality in Tokyo, Japan in the period from 2001 to 2011. The daily number of suicide deaths was obtained from the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, with pollen data being obtained from the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Public Health. A time-stratified case-crossover study was performed to examine the association between different levels of pollen concentration and suicide mortality. During the study period there were 5185 male and 2332 female suicides in the pollen season (February to April). For men there was no association between airborne pollen and suicide mortality. For women, compared to when there was no airborne pollen, the same-day (lag 0) pollen level of 30 to <100 grains per cm2 was associated with an approximately 50% increase in the odds for suicide (e.g. 30 to <50 grains per cm2: odds ratio 1.574, 95% confidence interval 1.076–2.303, p=0.020). The estimates remained fairly stable after adjusting for air pollutants and after varying the cut-points that defined the pollen levels. Our results indicate that pollen is associated with female suicide mortality in Tokyo.
