  • Cosmic-ray observations of the heliosphere with the PAMELA experiment
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Astrophysics. - : Elsevier BV. ; , s. 1848-1852
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The PAMELA experiment is a multi-purpose apparatus built around a permanent magnet spectrometer, with the main goal of studying in detail the antiparticle component of cosmic rays. The apparatus will be carried in space by means of a Russian satellite, due to launch in 2005, for a three year-long mission. The characteristics of the detectors composing the instrument, alongside the long lifetime of the mission and the orbital characteristics of the satellite, will allow to address several items of cosmic-ray physics. In this paper, we will focus on the solar and heliospheric observation capabilities of PAMELA.

  • About Separation of Hadron and Electromagnetic Cascades in the Pamela Calorimeter
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Modern Physics A. - 0217-751X .- 1793-656X. ; 20:29, s. 6745-6748
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Results of calibration of the PAMELA instrument at the CERN facilities are discussed. In September, 2003, the calibration of the Neutron Detector together with the Calorimeter was performed with the CERN beams of electrons and protons with energies of 20-180 GeV. The implementation of the Neutron Detector increases a rejection factor of hadrons from electrons about ten times. The results of calibration are in agreement with calculations.

  • Preliminary results of studying the effect of heavy charged particles on the human central nervous system in experiments SilEye and Alteino
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Bulletin of the Russian Academy of Sciences: Physics. - 1062-8738. ; 69:3, s. 512-514
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A series of experiments were carried out in the period 1995 to 2002 to study the phenomenon of light flashes (LFs) which arose in the eyes of astronauts. These experiments were made onboard the Mir orbital station (SilEye, SilEye-2) and on the Russian segment of the International Space Station (SilEye-3/Alteino). As a result of investigation it is reliably demonstrated that the majority of light flashes under conditions of a space flight are caused by nuclei of cosmic rays. Electric signals from brain, recorded during LF occurrence, were an important final result of these studies.

  • Relative nuclear abundances inside ISS with Sileye-3/Alteino experiment
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Advances in Space Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 0273-1177 .- 1879-1948. ; 37:9, s. 1685-1690
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The experiment Sileye-3/Alteino was first operational on board the international Space Station between 27/4 and 1/5/2002. It is constituted of a cosmic ray silicon detector and an electroencephalograph and is used to monitor radiation environment and study the light flash phenomenon in space. As a stand-alone device, Sileye-3/Alteino can monitor in real time cosmic ray nuclei. In this work, we report on relative nuclear abundance measurements in different regions of the orbit for nuclei from B to Fe in the energy range above similar or equal to 60 Mev/n. Abundances of nuclei such as 0 and Ne relative to C are found to be increased in respect to particle composition outside of the station, whereas the Fe group is reduced. This effect could be ascribed to nuclear interactions with the hull of the station.

  • ALTEA data handling
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: SPACE LIFE SCIENCES: FLIGHT MEASUREMENTS, CALIBRATION OF DETECTORS AND ENVIRONMENTAL MODELS FOR RADIATION ANALYSIS. - : ELSEVIER SCIENCE LTD. ; , s. 1710-1715
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ALTEA program is an international and multi-disciplinary collaboration aimed at studying particle radiation in space environment and its effects on astronauts, in particular the anomalous perception of Light Flashes. This paper describes ALTEA space facility scheduled to fly in the International Space Station (ISS) after July 2006, what kind of data are produced and how data are transmitted to Earth, processed and analyzed.

  • Chapter 5 - Burning plasma studies at jet
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Fusion science and technology. - 1536-1055 .- 1943-7641. ; 53:4, s. 989-1022
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Studies establishing key phenomena and developing diagnostics for energetic particle physics, which are essential for the next step burning plasma experiments such as the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), have been performed at the Joint European Torus (JET). Experiments have demonstrated clear self-heating of deuterium-tritium (D-T) plasma by alpha particles as a maximum in electron temperature at an optimum mixture of 60 +/- 20% tritium. The change in electron temperature produced by alpha heating, Delta T-e(0) = 1.3 +/- 0.23 keV, was as expected from classical heating, whereas the heating of thermal ions was higher than expected from reference deuterium discharges. Alfven eigenmodes were stable in the highest fusion performance D-T plasmas, in agreement with the modeling. Systematic studies on the existence and properties of Alfven eigenmodes with external antenna driving and detecting Alfven eigenmodes are presented. The formation of fuel ion tails due to alpha-particle knock-on effects is described as derived from neutral particle analyzer and neutron emission spectrometry in D-T experiments. The gamma-ray diagnostics are shown to measure Profiles and energy distribution functions of high-energy ions and alpha particles. Time- and space-resolved gamma-ray images demonstrated for the first time the possibility of measuring several types of energetic ions simultaneously. The novel technique of detecting unstable Alfven eigenmodes with interferometry is found to be superior in detecting core-localized Alfven eigenmodes.

  • TF ripple effects on the NBI deuteron confinement in JET
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: 34th EPS Conference on Plasma Physics 2007, EPS 2007 - Europhysics Conference Abstracts. - 9781622763344 ; , s. 876-879
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ripple induced reduction of the fluxes of deuterium neutrals in the 5-40 keV energy range from the plasma mid-plane was observed in recent JET experiments. The maximum observed reduction of D0 fluxes due to ripple is approximately 50 % and occurs at energies above 30 keV. In positive shear plasmas without ICRH ripple reduction of D0 fluxes vanishes at energies below 10 keV. However, in the case of plasmas with low or reversed shear core, increased D0 fluxes were observed for energies below 10-20 keV in the presence of additional ripple and ICRH heating. Interpretive modeling of the deuterium neutral emission that accounts for the superbanana ripple diffusion of NBI ions is in reasonable agreement with measurements at least for the scenarios without ICRH. Note that ripples may essentially effect the fast ion confinement in ITER where TF ripple magnitude at the outer separatrix is expected to be δ ∼ 0.5%.
