  • A conceptual framework for the development of a service delivery strategy for industrial systems and products
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of business & industrial marketing. - : Emerald. - 0885-8624 .- 2052-1189. ; 19:5, s. 310-319
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Service and product support are increasingly critical elements in the achievement of customer satisfaction and winning new markets. The success of a product support strategy depends on how effectively these services are delivered. The focus of this paper is on performance enhancement through the use of service delivery strategies; critical factors in the marketing of product support and service-related contracts that in turn, foster customer satisfaction, based on industrial systems in a multinational environment Considered in the framework are product design characteristics such as reliability, maintainability, customer's organizational culture and geographical location, for functional as well as conventional products. The paper advocates an increased focus on support to customers within the framework, introduces a modified service gap model and suggests an approach that reduces any gap between expected and required services. An evaluation of service delivery performance is emphasized.

  • Assessment of engine liner wear from bearing area curves
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Wear. - 0043-1648 .- 1873-2577. ; 239:2, s. 282-286
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper proposes a new procedure to evaluate engine liner wear volume and wear depth particularly for short duration engine tests. The method is based on the fact that honing depth is not removed when small amount of wear occurs. It was considered that 90% point of the bearing area curve is the same before and after wear. Then, the bearing area curve for the used liner was transformed by the depth differences at 90% and the area between the two curves was calculated by numerical procedure. As the diameter of the liner is known, the wear volume was calculated for the various zones selected at different points from TDC and BDC. The methodology involved has been programmed in C++. The wear depth is obtained by the projection on the depth axis of the two bearing area curves, and then finding their difference. This method is considered superior to the usual method of gauging the changes in diameter as such determinations are influenced by the distortions that occur in the liner. The new procedure needs to be applied more extensively to improve confidence in repeatability and reproducibility and to determine the limits of applicability. Controlled laboratory wear tests and further measurements on cylinders from field engines are therefore proposed.

  • Maintenance of machinery : negotiating service contracts in business-to-business marketing
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Service Industry Management. - : Emerald. - 0956-4233 .- 1758-6704. ; 15:3/4, s. 400-413
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As industrial products are becoming more advanced and complex, the role of supporting services needed to exploit a product's function to an agreeable performance is becoming increasingly important To achieve the best performance, industrial customers are entering into service contracts with the original equipment manufacturers (OEM) or independent service providers. This, in turn essentially involves service contract negotiation between OEM/service provider and the client If such contracts are not negotiated carefully, it may lead to conflict and poor system Performance. To achieve a win-win situation for both parties, aspects such as what services to deliver, who is to deliver them, how they are to be delivered and received, and at which performance level, need to be considered in the negotiation process and agreed upon by both the provider and the client. A conceptual framework has been developed for service delivery negotiation process based on review of literature and analysis of results from a survey conducted to study the existing approaches being practiced by the industrial organizations to negotiate a service contract.

  • Service delivery strategy: Trends in Mining Industries
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Surface Mining, Reclamation and Environment. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1389-5265 .- 1744-5000. ; 18:4, s. 299-307
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mine operators are increasingly outsourcing non-core business processes. Often, the maintenace issue is treated as a non-core business by the mining industry. In today's business environment, many industrial operators/users are interested in buying performance rather than physical products. It is a common practice for an original equipment manufacturer (OEM)/supplier of a product to own, operate, maintain, and support his product. Product performance in general is defined in a negotiated agreement. Even in a conventionl product scenario a user/mine operator often prefers to outsource maintenance to OEMs or contractors in order to focus on core business goals. This paper reviews the recent trends in delivery of product support within segments of the mining industry. In this paper, we advocate the adoption of 'solution-selling' and 'total care solutions' into the mining industry. There appears to be a strong likehood that these concepts can benefit the mining industry. Solution selling and total care solutions are seen as applicable to the mining industry because the product/equipment utilised in this industry are specialised and often expensive. The strategies addressed in this paper support a mine operator's option to buy process instead of physical products, and the increasing demand for a total solution.

  • A systematic methodology to characterise the running-in and steady-state wear processes
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Wear. - 0043-1648 .- 1873-2577. ; 252:5-6, s. 445-453
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An improved methodology has been developed to characterise running-in and steady-state wear processes. The experimental study was conducted with En 31 steel specimens on reciprocating tester with ball-on-flat geometry under lubricated sliding conditions. The tests were conducted according to a factorial design. The variables selected were the load, temperature and surface roughness. The wear behaviour for a given set of operating conditions has been characterised on the basis of developed methodology. The parametric influence of operating conditions was then analysed on the basis of polynomial relationships. The steady-state wear was found to be significantly influenced by the initial roughness.

  • Fatigue damage evolution in woven fabric composites
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: A collection of technical papers of the 41st AIAA/ASME/ASCE/AHS/ASC Structures, Structural Dynamics, and Materials Conference and Exhibit, AIAA/ASME/AHS Adaptive Structures Forum, AIAA Non-Deterministic Approaches Forum, AIAA Space Inflatables Forum, AIAA Dynamics Specialists Conference. - Reaston, Va. : American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, AIAA. ; , s. 1841-1849
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fatigue testing of 5-harness satin woven laminates indicates damage in the form of matrix cracking in transverse bundles and internal delamination at the tip of these cracks. These damage entities reduce the overall elastic properties of the laminate. The woven laminate is modeled by approximating it to an equivalent cross-ply laminate. The evolution of cracks during constant amplitude fatigue loading is explained by modeling both the cracks and internal delamination and assuming frictional stresses at the delaminated interface

  • A continuum damage model for linear viscoelastic composite materials
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Mechanics of materials. - 0167-6636 .- 1872-7743. ; 35:3-6, s. 463-480
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a constitutive model for linear viscoelastic orthotropic solids containing a fixed level of distributed cracks. The model is formulated in a continuum damage mechanics framework using internal variables taken as second rank tensors. Use is made of the correspondence principle for linear viscoelastic solids to define a pseudo strain energy function in the Laplace domain. This function is then expressed as a polynomial in transformed strain and tensorial damage variables using the integrity bases restricted by the initial orthotropic symmetry of the material. The constitutive relationships derived in the Laplace domain are then converted to the time domain by using the inverse Laplace transform. The model is applied to the specific case of cross-ply laminates with transverse matrix cracks. The material coefficient functions appearing in the model are determined by a numerical (finite element) method for one cross-ply laminate configuration at one damage level. Predictions of the viscoelastic response are then made for the same laminate at other damage levels and for other cross-ply laminate configurations at different damage levels. These predictions agree well with independently determined time variations of properties by an analytic method (Kumar and Talreja, 2001, Linear viscoelastic behavior of matrix cracked cross-ply laminates. Mechanics of Materials 33 (3), 139-154) as well as with the numerically calculated values. Extension of the model to incorporate effects of transient temperature, physical aging and moisture is outlined

  • Linear viscoelastic behavior of matrix cracked cross-ply laminates
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Mechanics of materials. - 0167-6636 .- 1872-7743. ; 33:3, s. 139-154
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The linear viscoelastic behavior of matrix cracked symmetric cross-ply laminates is studied. A lower bound solution and an approximate 3D solution to the properties are obtained by using the elastic-viscoelastic correspondence principle. The accuracy of Schapery's approximate Laplace inversion technique in the solution procedure is discussed

  • Study and analysis of service delivery strategy for industrial systems
  • 2003
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • As industrial products become more advanced and complex, the role of product support in performance optimisation becomes a critical issue for manufacturers and customers. Manufacturers often sell products with different forms and levels of product support. Included within this range of product support services are activities such as direct product support and more indirect customer support (e.g. training). Research studies have demonstrated that customer dissatisfaction is not so much a problem of gaps between required services and delivered services as much as it is a gap between required services and delivery of those services in a manner that most precisely supports customer activities. To achieve a level of customer satisfaction that leads to a win-win situation for both parties, service providers (original equipment manufacturers or independent service providers) must develop and then follow-through with an effective service delivery strategy. The focus of the work reported on in this thesis is the investigation of engineering factors/parameters that normally influence the development of service delivery strategies that encompass reliability, maintainability and so on. To achieve an competitive and effective service delivery strategy it is necessary to also analyse/consider such non-engineering factors as geographical location, customer maintenance strategies, operational requirements, operating environments, manufacturers/service provider own capability. Emphasized is that the key to a successful service delivery strategy lies in understanding individual customer requirements and needs. Through this philosophy, service delivery is then dimensioned based on actual requirements and needs. A comprehensive service delivery strategy must go beyond a focus on product or operating characteristics to include a "Total Care Solution Approach" which aims at delivering services that fully support customers' activity. In the research reported a framework for the development of a service delivery strategy that considers product characteristics and other influencing factors is presented. Additionally, the role of negotiation in delivering optimum service delivery is analysed through a study of existing practices within manufacturing and service companies in Sweden and Norway.

  • A synergistic damage mechanics approach to viscoelastic response of cracked cross-ply laminates
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: International journal of damage mechanics. - : SAGE Publications. - 1056-7895 .- 1530-7921. ; 13:4, s. 301-334
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A synergistic damage mechanics approach, i.e., a combined continuum damage mechanics (CDM) and micromechanics approach, is developed to characterize the viscoelastic response of cross-ply laminates with transverse cracks. The approach relies upon a second-order tensor-based description of damage wherein the crack opening displacement appears as an explicit function. The time variation of this function is calculated by micromechanics and is inserted into the continuum damage formulation. The relaxation moduli calculated for fixed states of damage (transverse crack density) by this approach agree well with independently calculated values by a CDM approach and finite element model. (Example materials: carbon-epoxy and glass-epoxy composites.)
