  • Targeting of diacerein loaded lipid nanoparticles to intra-articular cartilage using chondroitin sulfate as homing carrier for treatment of osteoarthritis in rats

    • Targeted delivery of antiosteoarthritic drug diacerein to articular tissue could be a major achievement and soluble polysaccharide chondroitin sulfate (ChS) may be a suitable agent for this. Therefore, diacerein loaded solid lipid nanoparticles modified with ChS (ChS-DC-SLN) were prepared for synergistic effect of these agents to combat multidimensional pathology of osteoarthritis (OA). Prepared formulation were of size range 396. ±. 2.7. nm, showed extended release up to 16. h and increased bioavailability of diacerein by 2.8 times. ChS-DC-SLN were evaluated for their effect on histopathology of femoro-tibial joint of rat knee and amount of ChS and rhein (an active metabolite of diacerein) at targeted site. Concentration of rhein was significantly higher in case of ChS-DC-SLN (7.8. ±. 1.23. μg/ml) than that of drug dispersion (2.9. ±. 0.45. μg/ml). It can be stated that ChS served as homing to articular cartilage for targeting of drug. Thus, ChS-DC-SLN have great potential to enhance the overall efficacy of treatment for OA. From the Clinical Editor: This study demonstrates the feasibility of targeted delivery of diacerein to articular tissue using soluble polysaccharide chondroitin sulfate as the targeting vector. This approach has the potential to significantly increase anti-arthritic drug concentration in joints without leading to systemic toxicity

  • A New Route toward Semiconductor Nanospintronics : Highly Mn-Doped GaAs Nanowires Realized by Ion-Implantation under Dynamic Annealing Conditions

    • We report on highly Mn-doped GaAs nanowires (NWs) of high crystalline quality fabricated by ion beam implantation, a technique that allows doping concentrations beyond the equilibrium solubility limit. We studied two approaches for the preparation of Mn-doped GaAs NWs: First, ion implantation at room temperature with subsequent annealing resulted in polycrystalline NWs and phase segregation of MnAs and GaAs. The second approach was ion implantation at elevated temperatures. In this case, the single-crystallinity of the GaAs NWs was maintained, and crystalline, highly Mn-doped GaAs NWs were obtained. The electrical resistance of such NWs dropped with increasing temperature (activation energy about 70 meV). Corresponding magnetoresistance measurements showed a decrease at low temperatures, indicating paramagnetism. Our findings suggest possibilities for future applications where dense arrays of GaMnAs nanowires may be used as a new kind of magnetic material system.

    • Cu-doped Zn1-xCdxS nanoparticles were synthesized by coprecipitation technique in ice bath at 280 K. The band gap energy of Zn1-xCdxS:Cu nanoparticles can be tuned to a lower energy by increasing the Cd content, indicating the formation of the alloyed nanoparticles. The alloy structure is further supported by the systematic shifting of characteristic x-ray diffraction peaks to lower angles with increase in Cd content. Systematic copper doping induces a red shift in the energy band gap of Zn0.9Cd0.1S:Cu nanoparticles with increase in copper concentration. Cu-doped Zn0.9Cd0.1S nanoparticles were found to have ferromagnetic nature at 5 K whereas undoped particles were found to be diamagnetic. Green luminescence further proves proper doping of Cu into the ZnCdS matrix. It is believed that the green luminescence originates from the recombination between the shallow donor level (sulfur vacancy) and the t(2) level of Cu2+. This method provides an inexpensive and simple procedure to produce ternary ZnCdS: Cu nanoparticles with tunable optical properties via changing Cd and/or Cu concentrations.

  • Development of cold bonded chromite pellets for ferrochrome production in submerged arc furnace

    • Pelletizing of Indian chromite ores is more challenging due to their high refractory nature. High Cr/Fe ratio and high MgO content in these ores demand high firing temperatures and longer firing cycles but often result in low strength fired pellets. Aim of this study was to develop cold bonded chromite pellets for smelting in submerged arc furnace (SAF) from chromite fines using suitable binder that induce less gangue into the pellets but cures quickly. Different binders were studied through laboratory pelletizing experiments for their suitability for cold bonding the pellets. As result, a composite binder comprising dextrin and bentonite, was found to be suitable and pellets made from the same were tested for their low and high temperature behavior. Electron and optical micro structural studies with image analysis were carried out to find out the type and amount of phases formed in the chromite pellets during high temperature reduction. High temperature reduction studies revealed that pellets were resistant to disintegration up to 1200°C. Pilot scale arc furnace trials were also carried out to compare the performance of cold bonded pellets (CBPs) with sintered chromite pellets and found that for a constant power input, smelting rate was faster for CBPs than sintered pellets. Loss of Cr to slag was reduced in case of cold bonded pellets usage.

  • Enhanced sputtering and incorporation of Mn in implanted GaAs and ZnO nanowires

    • We simulated and experimentally investigated the sputter yield of ZnO and GaAs nanowires, which were implanted with energetic Mn ions at room temperature. The resulting thinning of the nanowires and the dopant concentration with increasing Mn ion fluency were measured by accurate scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and nano-x-Ray Fluorescence (nanoXRF) quantification, respectively. We observed a clearly enhanced sputter yield for the irradiated nanowires compared to bulk, which is also corroborated by iradina simulations. These show a maximum if the ion range matches the nanowire diameter. As a consequence of the erosion thinning of the nanowire, the incorporation of the Mn dopants is also enhanced and increases non-linearly with increasing ion fluency.

  • Magnetic polarons and large negative magnetoresistance in GaAs nanowires implanted with Mn ions

    • We report on low-temperature magnetotransport and SQUID measurements on heavily doped Mn-implanted GaAs nanowires. SQUID data recorded at low magnetic fields exhibit clear signs of the onset of a spin-glass phase with a transition temperature of about 16 K. Magnetotransport experiments reveal a corresponding peak in resistance at 16 K and a remarkably large negative magnetoresistance, reaching 40 % at 1.6 K and 8 T. The negative magnetoresistance decreases at elevated temperatures and vanishes at about 100 K. We interpret our transport data in terms of spin-dependent hopping in a complex magnetic nanowire landscape of magnetic polarons forming a paramagnetic/spin-glass phase.
