  • Stability and thermal behavior of molybdenum disulfide nanotubes: Nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulation using REBO potential
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 122:22
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study is an attempt to perform equilibrium molecular dynamics and non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) to evaluate the stability and thermal behavior of molybdenum disulfide nanotubes (MoS2NTs) by reactive empirical bond order potential. The stability of nanotubes, cohesive energy, isobaric heat capacity, and enthalpies of fusion in armchair and zigzag structures with different radii were calculated. The observed results illustrate that SWMoS2NTs, which have larger diameters, are more stable with more negative energy than the smaller ones. Moreover, it was found that the melting point is increased with an increase in the nanotube's radius. During the melting process, the structural transformation of nanotubes was investigated using a mean-square displacement and radial distribution function diagrams. Afterwards, using a NEMD simulation, the thermal conductivity of nanotubes with various diameters was calculated at a constant nanotube length. The obtained results show that the thermal conductivity coefficient increases with increasing nanotube diameters when the nanotube length is constant.

  • Raman characterization of single-crystalline Ga0.96Mn0.04As:Zn nanowires realized by ion-implantation
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nanotechnology. - Bristol : IOP Publishing. - 0957-4484 .- 1361-6528. ; 30:33
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent progress in the realization of magnetic GaAs nanowires (NWs) doped with Mn has attracted a lot of attention due to their potential application in spintronics. In this work, we present a detailed Raman investigation of the structural properties of Zn doped GaAs (GaAs:Zn) and Mn-implanted GaAs:Zn (Ga0.96Mn0.04As:Zn) NWs. A significant broadening and redshift of the optical TO and LO phonon modes are observed for these NWs compared to as-grown undoped wires, which is attributed to strain induced by the Zn/Mn doping and to the presence of implantation-related defects. Moreover, the LO phonon modes are strongly damped, which is interpreted in terms of a strong LO phonon-plasmon coupling, induced by the free hole concentration. Moreover, we report on two new interesting Raman phonon modes (191 and 252 cm-1) observed in Mn ion-implanted NWs, which we attribute to Eg (TO) and A1g (LO) vibrational modes in a sheet layer of crystalline arsenic present on the surface of the NWs. This conclusion is supported by fitting the observed Raman shifts for the SO phonon modes to a theoretical dispersion function for a GaAs NW capped with a dielectric shell.

  • Field cress genome mapping: Integrating linkage and comparative maps with cytogenetic analysis for rDNA carrying chromosomes
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322. ; 9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Field cress (Lepidium campestre L.), despite its potential as a sustainable alternative oilseed plant, has been underutilized, and no prior attempts to characterize the genome at the genetic or molecular cytogenetic level have been conducted. Genetic maps are the foundation for anchoring and orienting annotated genome assemblies and positional cloning of candidate genes. Our principal goal was to construct a genetic map using integrated approaches of genetic, comparative and cytogenetic map analyses. In total, 503 F-2 interspecific hybrid individuals were genotyped using 7,624 single nucleotide polymorphism markers. Comparative analysis demonstrated that similar to 57% of the sequenced loci in L. campestre were congruent with Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) genome and suggested a novel karyotype, which predates the ancestral crucifer karyotype. Aceto-orcein chromosome staining and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analyses confirmed that L. campestre, L. heterophyllum Benth. and their hybrids had a chromosome number of 2n = 2x = 16. Flow cytometric analysis revealed that both species possess 2C roughly 0.4 picogram DNA. Integrating linkage and comparative maps with cytogenetic map analyses assigned two linkage groups to their particular chromosomes. Future work could incorporate FISH utilizing A. thaliana mapped BAC clones to allow the chromosomes of field cress to be identified reliably.

  • Potato tuber expression of Arabidopsis WRINKLED1 increase triacylglycerol and membrane lipids while affecting central carbohydrate metabolism
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Plant Biotechnology Journal. - : Wiley. - 1467-7644 .- 1467-7652. ; 14, s. 1883-1898
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tuber and root crops virtually exclusively accumulate storage products in the form of carbohydrates. An exception is yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus) in which tubers have the capacity to store starch and triacylglycerols (TAG) in roughly equal amounts. This suggests that a tuber crop can efficiently handle accumulation of energy dense oil. From a nutritional as well as economic aspect, it would be of interest to utilize the high yield capacity of tuber or root crops for oil accumulation similar to yellow nutsedge. The transcription factor WRINKLED1 from Arabidopsis thaliana, which in seed embryos induce fatty acid synthesis, has been shown to be a major factor for oil accumulation. WRINKLED1 was expressed in potato (Solanum tuberosum) tubers to explore whether this factor could impact tuber metabolism. This study shows that a WRINKLED1 transcription factor could induce triacylglycerol accumulation in tubers of transformed potato plants grown in field (up to 12 nmol TAG/mg dry weight, 1% of dry weight) together with a large increase in polar membrane lipids. The changes in metabolism further affected starch accumulation and composition concomitant with massive increases in sugar content.

  • Abort-on-Fail Test Scheduling for Modular SOCs without and with Preemption
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Computers. - 0018-9340. ; 64:12, s. 3335-3347
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • System-on-chips (SOCs) and 3D stacked ICs are often tested for manufacturing defects in a modular fashion, enabling us to record the module test pass probability. We use this pass probability to exploit the abort-on-fail feature of automatic test equipment (ATE) and hence reduce the expected test time in the context of single-site testing. We present a model for calculation of expected test time, for which the abortable test unit can be a module test, a test pattern or a clock cycle. Given an SOC, with test architecture consisting of module test wrappers and test access mechanisms (TAMs), and given module test pass probabilities, we schedule the tests on each TAM to minimize the expected test time. We describe four scheduling heuristics, one without and three with preemption. Experimental results for the ITC’02 SOC Test Benchmarks show 3.5% and 20% reduction of expected test time in SOCs with 0.89 and 0.71 SOC test pass probability respectively, without modification of SOC or ATE. Further experiments show how accurate estimates for the module test pass probability or the distribution of pass probability over test patterns need to be to lead to effective test schedulng.

  • Norbornadiene-Based Photoswitches with Exceptional Combination of Solar Spectrum Match and Long-Term Energy Storage
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Chemistry - A European Journal. - : Wiley. - 1521-3765 .- 0947-6539. ; 24:49, s. 12767-12772
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Norbornadiene-quadricyclane (NBD-QC) photoswitches are candidates for applications in solar thermal energy storage. Functionally, they rely on an intramolecular [2+2] cycloaddition reaction, which couples the S0 landscape on the NBD side to the S1 landscape on the QC side of the reaction and vice-versa. This commonly results in an unfavourable correlation between the first absorption maximum and the barrier for thermal back-conversion. This work demonstrates that this correlation can be counteracted by using steric repulsion to hamper the rotational motion of the side groups along the back-conversion path. It is shown that this modification reduces the correlation between the effective back-conversion barrier and the first absorption maximum and also increases the back-conversion entropy. The resulting molecules exhibit exceptionally long half-lives for their metastable forms without significantly affecting other properties, most notably solar spectrum match and storage density.

  • Efficient RNA silencing suppression activity of Potato Mop-Top Virus 8K protein is driven by variability and positive selection
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Virology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0042-6822 .- 1178-122X. ; 535, s. 111-121
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previously, we investigated the evolution of Potato mop-top virus (PMTV) ORFs. Results indicate that positive selection acts exclusively on an ORF encoding the 8K protein, a weak viral suppressor of RNA silencing (VSR). However, how the extraordinary variability contributes to 8K-mediated RNA silencing suppression remains unknown. Here, we characterized the RNA silencing suppression activity of the 8K protein from seven diverse isolates. We show that 8K encoded by isolate P1 exhibits stronger RNA silencing suppression activity than the 8K protein from six other isolates. Mutational analyses revealed that Ser-50 is critical for these differences. By comparing small RNA profiles we found a lower abundance of siRNAs with U residue at the 5'-terminus after expression of the P1 8K compared to expression of 8K from isolate P125, an isolate with weak VSR activity. These results provide new clues as to the role of positive selection in shaping activities of VSRs.

  • Establishing a Novel Methodology to Correlate the Macroscopic and Microscopic Degree of Sintering inMagnetite Pellets during Induration
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Steel Research International. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1611-3683 .- 1869-344X. ; 89:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The quality of product pellets is a result of the physico-chemical phenomenainvolved in the induration process. Sintering is the primary phenomenon, and its degree or extent contributes substantially to the evolution of themetallurgical and mechanical properties of a pellet. During the induration ofmagnetite pellets, sintering proceeds through the oxidized and non-oxidizedmagnetite phases. Sintering of these phases has been previously studied ona single pellet at the macroscopic scale using an optical dilatometer. Adeeper understanding requires corroboration of these studies throughcharacterization at the microscopic scale. In the present work, the observationsrecorded at the microscopic scale are quantified using image processingtechniques to correlate them to the macroscopic measurements. Distancetransformation, which is an image processing principle, is adapted in a novelway to digitize the microstructures and to determine the degree of sinteringin a pellet quantitatively. This methodology has potential applications as ageneric tool to follow the sintering phenomenon and process kinetics at anystage during induration.
