  • The origins and spread of domestic horses from the Western Eurasian steppes
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 598, s. 634-640
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Analysis of 273 ancient horse genomes reveals that modern domestic horses originated in the Western Eurasian steppes, especially the lower Volga-Don region. Domestication of horses fundamentally transformed long-range mobility and warfare(1). However, modern domesticated breeds do not descend from the earliest domestic horse lineage associated with archaeological evidence of bridling, milking and corralling(2-4) at Botai, Central Asia around 3500 bc(3). Other longstanding candidate regions for horse domestication, such as Iberia(5) and Anatolia(6), have also recently been challenged. Thus, the genetic, geographic and temporal origins of modern domestic horses have remained unknown. Here we pinpoint the Western Eurasian steppes, especially the lower Volga-Don region, as the homeland of modern domestic horses. Furthermore, we map the population changes accompanying domestication from 273 ancient horse genomes. This reveals that modern domestic horses ultimately replaced almost all other local populations as they expanded rapidly across Eurasia from about 2000 bc, synchronously with equestrian material culture, including Sintashta spoke-wheeled chariots. We find that equestrianism involved strong selection for critical locomotor and behavioural adaptations at the GSDMC and ZFPM1 genes. Our results reject the commonly held association(7) between horseback riding and the massive expansion of Yamnaya steppe pastoralists into Europe around 3000 bc(8,9) driving the spread of Indo-European languages(10). This contrasts with the scenario in Asia where Indo-Iranian languages, chariots and horses spread together, following the early second millennium bc Sintashta culture(11,12).

  • NeuLAND: The high-resolution neutron time-of-flight spectrometer for R 3 B at FAIR
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research, Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002. ; 1014
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • NeuLAND (New Large-Area Neutron Detector) is the next-generation neutron detector for the R3B (Reactions with Relativistic Radioactive Beams) experiment at FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research). NeuLAND detects neutrons with energies from 100 to 1000 MeV, featuring a high detection efficiency, a high spatial and time resolution, and a large multi-neutron reconstruction efficiency. This is achieved by a highly granular design of organic scintillators: 3000 individual submodules with a size of 5 × 5 × 250 cm3 are arranged in 30 double planes with 100 submodules each, providing an active area of 250 × 250 cm2 and a total depth of 3 m. The spatial resolution due to the granularity together with a time resolution of σt≤ 150 ps ensures high-resolution capabilities. In conjunction with calorimetric properties, a multi-neutron reconstruction efficiency of 50% to 70% for four-neutron events will be achieved, depending on both the emission scenario and the boundary conditions allowed for the reconstruction method. We present in this paper the final design of the detector as well as results from test measurements and simulations on which this design is based.

  • Exposure of volunteers to microgravity by dry immersion bed over 21 days results in gene expression changes and adaptation of T cells
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Science Advances. - 2375-2548. ; 9:34
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The next steps of deep space exploration are manned missions to Moon and Mars. For safe space missions for crew members, it is important to understand the impact of space flight on the immune system. We studied the effects of 21 days dry immersion (DI) exposure on the transcriptomes of T cells isolated from blood samples of eight healthy volunteers. Samples were collected 7 days before DI, at day 7, 14, and 21 during DI, and 7 days after DI. RNA sequencing of CD3(+) T cells revealed transcriptional alterations across all time points, with most changes occurring 14 days after DI exposure. At day 21, T cells showed evidence of adaptation with a transcriptional profile resembling that of 7 days before DI. At 7 days after DI, T cells again changed their transcriptional profile. These data suggest that T cells adapt by rewiring their transcriptomes in response to simulated weightlessness and that remodeling cues persist when reexposed to normal gravity.

  • Carbon vacancy control in p(+)-n silicon carbide diodes for high voltage bipolar applications
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics D. - : IOP Publishing. - 0022-3727 .- 1361-6463. ; 54:45
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Controlling the carbon vacancy (V-C) in silicon carbide (SiC) is one of the major remaining bottleneck in manufacturing of high voltage SiC bipolar devices, because V-C provokes recombination levels in the bandgap, offensively reducing the charge carrier lifetime. In literature, prominent V-C evolutions have been measured by capacitance spectroscopy employing Schottky diodes, however the trade-offs occurring in the p(+)-n diodes received much less attention. In the present work, applying similar methodology, we showed that V-C is re-generated to its unacceptably high equilibrium level at similar to 2 x10(13) V-C cm(-3) by 1800 degrees C anneals required for the implanted acceptor activation in the p(+)-n components. Nevertheless, we have also demonstrated that the V-C eliminating by thermodynamic equilibrium anneals at 1500 degrees C employing carbon-cap can be readily integrated into the p(+)-n components fabrication resulting in <= 10(11) V-C cm(-3), potentially paving the way towards the realization of the high voltage SiC bipolar devices.

  • Classification of European bog vegetation of the Oxycocco‐Sphagnetea class
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Applied Vegetation Science. - : Wiley. - 1402-2001 .- 1654-109X. ; 25:1, s. 1-19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aims: Classification of  European bog   vegetation (Oxycocco- Sphagnetea class);    iden  -tification of  diagnostic species for   the   class    and   vegetation subgroups (orders and alliances); development of  an  expert     system for   automatic classification of  vegetation plots; and production of distribution maps of the Oxycocco- Sphagnetea class and its alliances.Location: Europe. Methods: A  data   set   of  vegetation- plot   records was   compiled to  include various bog types    over    most    of  the   European continent. An   unsupervised classification (beta- flexible linkage    method, Sørensen distance measure) and  detrended correspondenceanalysis (DCA)    ordination were    applied. Formal definitions of  syntaxa based    on  spe -cies  presence  and  covers,  and  respecting  the  results  of  the  unsupervised  classifica-tion, were developed and included in a classification expert system. Results: The Oxycocco- Sphagnetea class,    its  two   orders (Sphagno- Ericetalia  tetralicisand Sphagnetalia medii)  and   seven    compositionally distinct alliances were    formally de -fined.    In  addition to  the   syntaxa included in  EuroVegChecklist, three    new    alliances were distinguished: Rubo chamaemori- Dicranion elongati (subarctic polygon and   palsa mires);    Erico mackaianae- Sphagnion papillosi (blanket bogs   of  the  northwestern IberianPeninsula); and  Sphagno  baltici- Trichophorion  cespitosi (boreal bog   lawns). The   latter alliance is newly described in this article. Conclusions: This   first   pan-   European formalized classification of  European bog   veg -etation partially followed the   system presented in  EuroVegChecklist, but   suggested three  additional  alliances.  One  covers  palsa  and  polygon  mires,  one  covers  Iberian  bogs    with    endemics and   one   fills   the   syntaxonomical gap   for   lawn    microhabitats in boreal    bogs.    A  classification expert     system has   been   developed, which    allows    assign   -ment of vegetation plots to the types described.

  • Integration, qualification, and launch of the Mini-EUSO telescope on board the ISS
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Rendiconti Lincei SCIENZE FISICHE E NATURALI. - : Springer Nature. - 2037-4631 .- 1720-0776. ; 34:1, s. 23-35
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mini-EUSO is a high-sensitivity imaging telescope that observes the Earth from the ISS in the near ultraviolet band (290÷ 430 nm), through the nadir-facing, UV-transparent window in the Russian Zvezda module. The instrument, launched in 2019, has a field of view of 44∘, a spatial resolution on the Earth’s surface of 6.3 km and a temporal sampling rate of 2.5 microseconds. Thanks to its triggering and on-board processing, the telescope is capable of detecting UV emissions of cosmic, atmospheric, and terrestrial origin on different time scales, from a few microseconds up to tens of milliseconds. The optics is composed of two Fresnel lenses focusing light onto an array of 36 Hamamatsu Multi-Anode PhotoMultiplier Tubes, for a total of 2304 pixels. The telescope also contains two cameras in the near-infrared and visible, an 8-by-8 array of Silicon-PhotoMultipliers and a series of UV sensors to manage night-day transitions. The scientific objectives range from the observation of atmospheric phenomena [lightning, Transient Luminous Events (TLEs), ELVES], the study of meteoroids, the search of interstellar meteoroids and strange quark matter, mapping of the Earth’s nocturnal emissions in the ultraviolet range, and the search of cosmic rays with energy above 1021 eV. The instrument has been integrated and qualified in 2019, with the final tests in Baikonur prior to its launch. Operations involve periodic installation in the Zvezda module of the station with observations during the crew night time, with periodic downlink of data samples, with the full data being sent to the ground via pouches containing the data disks. Mission planning involves the selection of the optimal orbits to maximize the scientific return of the instrument. In this work, we will describe the various phases of construction, testing, and qualification prior to the launch and the in-flight operations of the instrument on board the ISS.
