Denna nionde volym av Lärobok i Militärteknik, benämnd Teori och Metod, behandlar centrala begrepp, teorier och postulat samt metoder för värdering av teknik och består av ett antal texter författade av 16 forskare och lärare vid den militärtekniska avdelningen. Volymen riktar sig främst till de som inlett sin officersutbildning och utgörs till stora delar av ett kompilat av publicerade och opublicerade militärtekniska texter och kan sägas utgöra militärteknikens ”state of the art”.

  • Optimisation of Cylinder Liner Surface Finish by Slide Honing

    • Cylinder liner surface finish controls the frictional losses, oil consumption, and emissions of internal combustion engines to a large extent. In order to minimize such losses, it is important to optimize the liner surface topography by a consistent and more productive finishing process such as slide honing. This process employs diamond abrasives and has been recently introduced in the automotive industry. In this study, its potentials are explored, especially the winning combination of its key process parameters: the base honing pressure and plateau honing time that would yield an optimal liner surface finish. A number of truck engine liners were slide-honed by using different process parameters, samples of the liners were cut, and three-dimensional (3D) surface measurements were taken on a white light interferometer. Then, among others, the (deep honing) groove parameters, specific for liner surfaces, were computed from the measurements for building a large database for comparison and correlation. By simulating the contact and fluid mechanics between the measured liner topographies and a twin land oil control ring under mixed lubrication conditions, the friction mean effective pressure and oil passage rate for a range of engine speeds were calculated. These two parameters represent the liner's function associated with the engine's friction and oil consumption respectively. The results show that the lowest friction and oil flow are highly correlated with surfaces having smoother plateaus and smaller valleys, finished by using lower base honing pressure and longer plateau honing time. High correlations between the 3D roughness parameters were also found, enabling the selection and use of more stable and robust parameters in the quality control of the liner's surface finish. © IMechE 2012.

    • This cost-benefit analysis compared different strategies for ash recycling in southern Swedish forests, with a special emphasis on the potential to use ash recycling as a measure to ameliorate acidification of soils and surface waters caused by acid deposition. Benefit transfer was used to estimate use values for sport fishing and non-use values in terms of existence values. The results show that the optimal share of acidified forest land that should be treated with ash depends on how optimistic one is about the effect of using ash to restore lakes and streams from acidification. More optimistic assumptions imply that the ash to larger extent should be used to ameliorate acidification. Using the most realistic assumption, given the experiences of forest liming, shows that acidified forest land should not be treated with ash with the aim of restoring lakes and streams from acidification. From a socioeconomic point of view, ash simply does more good as fertilizer on forested organic soils.(C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    • There is today a need of better prediction of part geometry regarding industrial products by simulations. There is a need for better prediction of material inflow, stresses and strains and final geometry. One way to solve this could be by using a more advanced friction model. Today a zero order friction model (Coulomb friction) is normally used. By using a friction model of higher order the friction is not constant and can be changed depending on both different input parameters set from start in friction equation such as surface roughness, hardness, dynamic viscosity and numerous parameters that are automatic inputs to the friction equation during the forming process and taken from the actual FEM simulation such as sliding ve-locity and load. In this paper a first order friction model regarding effects and changes when simulating the forming of advanced thin plate parts has been evaluated. The evaluation has been performed in several steps. First an analysis of variance was made to see how different input parameters, and variation of these, affect the output regarding material inflow, formability and calculated friction at a specific position. Of course also the actual setup of the forming simulation influences the output and can be even more important to adjust when using a higher order friction model. Because of this different ways of meshing were evaluated. A final verification has been made in a special demonstrator tool. In this tool it is possible to evaluate the effects in a scientific way and the tool is verified against real part production.
