  • Förenade krafter och hotfull natur : Om gemenskap, naturvård och invasiva arter
  • 2021

  • A Nationalist Contradiction : Homonationalism and Nationalist Anti-LGBTQ Politics and Activism in Sweden
  • 2023
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Homonationalism and nationalist anti-LGBTQ politics and activism are two geographical and historical processes which contradict each other, as the latter frequently targets the former (and vice versa). We see this contradiction in the global far-right attacks on LGBTQ people, rights, and spaces through discourse, politics, and violence, including in nation-states frequently thought of as progressively pushing LGBTQ rights forward through national legislation and shifting values among the population from homophobic to “LGBTQ friendly” (i.e. homonationalism). While this contradiction may be thought of as indicating flaws in linearly progressing democracies (a so-called “backlash” to LGBTQ rights), this thesis instead examines if and how these polar movements are unified through the struggle over the role of sexuality in nationalism. It does so by examining how nationalist anti-LGBTQ politics and activism have contributed to an evolving homonationalist discourse in Sweden. Drawing upon qualitative analyses of neo-Nazi and far-right anti-LGBTQ attacks and oppositions to LGBTQ spaces between 2016 and 2020, and responses to them, the thesis analyses the ways in which state hegemony and nationalist myths about an LGBTQ-inclusive Swedish state are re-articulated in different responses to anti-LGBTQ nationalism. The thesis consists of two parts: the first is a theoretical introduction to sexuality as constructed through nationalism, which also provides an outline of the thesis’ methodology. The second part consists of five research articles which together analyse events of nationalist sexual politics in Sweden and their connections to homonationalist discourse. The two first articles examine the economic and political contexts for Swedish homonationalism and nationalist anti-LGBTQ politics and activism. The third, fourth, and fifth articles analyse concrete nationalist anti-LGBTQ political and activist events and how they have affected and been shaped by (homo)nationalist discourse, policing, and legislation..

  • Läge, lån och lovord : Ekonomiska, sociala och rumsliga relationer i Sundborns socken åren 1820–1888
  • 2022
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this thesis is to visualize and explain key dimensions of people’s economic and social relations in the Swedish parish of Sundborn, in the southeast of Dalarna, in the period 1820–1849. In addition, the thesis examines the determinants of total household assets, claims and debts during the period 1820–1888. The studies that comprise the thesis are based on records of claims, debts and assets held in estate inventories and parish registers. The private local credit market of Sundborn is reconstructed in the thesis. It shows that most participants in this market lived in the parish, and that while few people had formal loans issued by institutions, many had private loans issued on trust. Meanwhile, although few people were lenders, almost everyone was a borrower. The most common credit relationship was between people who lived near one another, and people who lived near one another or were related received higher average credit. The private local credit market consisted primarily of men. The thesis interprets these findings using social network theory, showing that people depended on their social network to obtain the necessary credit: that is, debt relations helped to constitute the social fabric in the parish of Sundborn insofar as such relations were a crucial mechanism of linkage between households. By using this method, it is also possible to identify significant persons and potential parish bankers. Through the use of regression and spatial analysis, the following additional conclusions are drawn.  People's indebtedness was greatest in the most active phase of life. Total household assets increased with age, until the point at which a new generation took over. It was mainly wealthy people who held claims, but their debts were also larger than those of the less affluent. The demographic attributes that most affected the household economy were marital status and having heirs. Furthermore, the results suggest that the physical landscape of the settlement influenced households assets, because households located at higher altitudes had lower total assets. Through combining a social network graph with maps of the physical landscape, connections between location, assets, economic relations and social relations are sketched out.

  • Walk a mile in someone else’s shoes : The difficult school route and how it was managed during the emergence of the Swedish folkskolan, 1840–1930
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Norsk Geografisk Tidsskrift. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0029-1951 .- 1502-5292. ; 76:1, s. 1-13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Sweden, common elementary schools (folkskolan) were introduced in the 1840s. As a consequence, children started walking to and from school several days per week. The school route, as both place and practice, impacted society and families; it created new ways and needs in everyday life. From a time-geographic perspective, the article investigates children’s mobility in everyday life in order to understand what walking to school encompassed. Moreover, whereas the common narrative of school routes in the past emphasizes distances and challenges of the journeys it often omits the adult world’s comprehension and involvement. The aim of the article is to increase understandings of the school route as a phenomenon and its meanings in everyday life from a historical perspective. Through qualitative analysis of memoirs and societal discussions, the authors focus on the difficulties (conceptualized as “weights”) that the school routes could entail and how the adult world tried to manage them (conceptualized as “reliefs”). One conclusion is that society and families were aware of, and tried to deal with, those hardships, and a second is that the school route was more than a distance. In this regard, variations in families’ geographical and socioeconomic positions and the physical landscape played crucial roles.
