  • Precision electroweak measurements on the Z resonance
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physics Reports. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-1573 .- 1873-6270. ; 427:5-6, s. 257-454
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the final electroweak measurements performed with data taken at the Z resonance by the experiments operating at the electron-positron colliders SLC and LEP. The data consist of 17 million Z decays accumulated by the ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL experiments at LEP, and 600 thousand Z decays by the SLID experiment using a polarised beam at SLC. The measurements include cross-sections, forward-backward asymmetries and polarised asymmetries. The mass and width of the Z boson, m(Z) and Gamma(Z), and its couplings to fermions, for example the p parameter and the effective electroweak mixing angle for leptons, are precisely measured: m(Z) = 91.1875 +/- 0.0021 GeV, Gamma(Z) = 2.4952 +/- 0.0023 GeV, rho(l) = 1.0050 +/- 0.0010, sin(2)theta(eff)(lept) = 0.23153 +/- 0.00016. The number of light neutrino species is determined to be 2.9840 +/- 0.0082, in agreement with the three observed generations of fundamental fermions. The results are compared to the predictions of the Standard Model (SM). At the Z-pole, electroweak radiative corrections beyond the running of the QED and QCD coupling constants are observed with a significance of five standard deviations, and in agreement with the Standard Model. Of the many Z-pole measurements, the forward-backward asymmetry in b-quark production shows the largest difference with respect to its SM expectation, at the level of 2.8 standard deviations. Through radiative corrections evaluated in the framework of the Standard Model, the Z-pole data are also used to predict the mass of the top quark, m(t) = 173(+10)(+13) GeV, and the mass of the W boson, m(W) = 80.363 +/- 0.032 GeV. These indirect constraints are compared to the direct measurements, providing a stringent test of the SM. Using in addition the direct measurements of m(t) and m(W), the mass of the as yet unobserved SM Higgs boson is predicted with a relative uncertainty of about 50% and found to be less than 285 GeV at 95% confidence level. • Magnetic properties of deformed dipole bands in Te-110,Te-112
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physica Scripta. - 0031-8949. ; T125, s. 192-193
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A lifetime analysis using the Doppler-shift attenuation method has been performed on the Tellurium isotopes Te-110,Te-112. The experiment was performed using the Gammasphere array in conjunction with the MICROBALL charged-particle detector. Three strongly coupled bands were previously established in Te-110,Te-112 which were observed up to unusually high spins. In the current experiment, it has been possible to extract lifetime measurements using a Doppler broadened lineshape analysis on one of the Delta I = 1 band structures in Te-110. In contrast to similar Delta I = 1 structures in other nuclei in this mass region, the extracted B(M1) values did not rapidly decrease with increasing angular momentum. Instead, the strongly coupled band in Te-110 represents a deformed 1p-1h structure, rather than a weakly deformed structure showing the shears mechanism.

  • Smooth terminating bands in Te-112: Particle-hole induced collectivity
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 75:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Gammasphere spectrometer, in conjunction with the Microball charged-particle array, was used to investigate high-spin states in Te-112 via Ni-58(Ni-58, 4p gamma) reactions at 240 and 250 MeV. Several smooth terminating bands were established, and lifetime measurements were performed for the strongest one using the Doppler-shift attenuation method. Results obtained in the spin range 18-32h yield a transition quadrupole moment of 4.0 +/- 0.5eb, which corresponds to a quadrupole deformation epsilon(2)=0.26 +/- 0.03; this value is significantly larger than the ground-state deformation of tellurium isotopes. It was also possible to extract a transition quadrupole moment for the yrast band in Xe-114, produced via the 58Ni (58Ni, 2p gamma) reaction. A value of 3.0 +/- 0.5eb was found in the spin range 16-24h, which corresponds to a quadrupole deformation epsilon(2)=0.19 +/- 0.03. Cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations are used to interpret the results.

  • Spectroscopy of Po-212 and At-213 using a He-8 radioactive beam and EXOGAM
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics G. - : IOP Publishing. - 0954-3899 .- 1361-6471. ; 31:10, s. S1851-S1854
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A beam of 28 MeV He-8 particles with an average intensity 2 x 10(5) ions s(-1), produced by the SPIRAL facility at GANIL, was used to initiate fusion-evaporation reactions in thick targets of Pb-201 and Bi-209. Excited states of Po-212 and At-213 were populated in (He-8,4n) reactions. The emitted gamma-rays were detected using the EXOGAM array composed of four Compton suppressed germanium Clover detectors in a close geometry configuration. Preliminary results show that Po-212 has been populated to high spin (I similar or equal to 14) with a significantly increased yield compared with our previous He-8 beam experiment. An apparently increased relative population of states up to 12(+) was observed compared with published results from a Pb-208(Be-9,alpha n)(212) Po reaction at 48 MeV. Evidence is presented for a previously unreported de-excitation pathway: 69 keV (13(-) -> 12(+)). States up to I-pi = (39/2(-)) have also been observed in At-213.

  • Classification of osteoarthritis biomarkers: a proposed approach
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Osteoarthritis and Cartilage. - : Elsevier BV. - 1063-4584. ; 14:8, s. 723-727
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: Osteoarthritis (OA) biomarkers are needed by researchers and clinicians to assist in disease diagnosis and assessment of disease severity, risk of onset, and progression. As effective agents for CA are developed and tested in clinical studies, biomarkers; that reliably mirror or predict the progression or amelioration of CA will also be needed. Methods: The NIH-funded CA Biomarkers Network is a multidisciplinary group interested in the development and validation of CA biomarkers. This review summarizes our efforts to characterize and classify CA biomarkers. Results: We propose the "BIPED" biomarker classification (which stands for Burden of Disease, Investigative, Prognostic, Efficacy of Intervention and Diagnostic), and offer suggestions on optimal study design and analytic methods for use in CA investigations. Conclusion. The BIPED classification provides specific biomarker definitions with the goal of improving our ability to develop and analyze OA biomarkers, and to communicate these advances within a common framework. • Somatic acquisition and signaling of TGFBR1*6A in cancer
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). - : American Medical Association (AMA). - 0098-7484 .- 1538-3598. ; 294:13, s. 1634-1646
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Context: TGFBR1*6A is a common polymorphism of the type I transforming growth factor 0 receptor (TGFBR1). Epidemiological studies suggest that TGFBR1*6A may act as a tumor susceptibility allele. How TGFBR1*6A contributes to cancer development is largely unknown.. Objectives: To determine whether TGFBR1*6A is somatically acquired by primary tumors and metastases during cancer development and whether the 3-amino acid deletion that differentiates TGFBR1*6A from TGFBR1 is part of the mature receptor or part of the signal sequence and to investigate TGFBR1*6A signaling in cancer cells. Design, Setting, and Patients: Tumor And germline tissues from 531 patients with a diagnosis of head and neck, colorectal, or breast cancer recruited from 3 centers in the United States and from 1 center in Spain from June 1, 1994, through June 30, 2004, In vitro translation assays, MCF-7 breast cancer cells stably transfected with TGFBR1*6A, TGFBR1, or the vector alone, DLD-1 colorectal cancer cells that endogenously carry TGFBR1*6A, and SW48 colorectal cancer cells that do not carry TGFBR1*6A. Main Outcome Measures: TGFBR1*6A somatic acquisition in cancer. Determination of the amino terminus of the mature TGFBR1*6A and TGFBR1 receptors. Determination of TGF-beta-dependent cell proliferation. Results: TGFBR1*6A was somatically acquired in 13 of 44 (29.5%) colorectal cancer metastases, in 4 of 157 (2.5%) of colorectal tumors, in 4 of 226 (1.8%) head and neck primary tumors, and in none of the 104 patients with breast cancer. TGFBR1*6A somatic acquisition is not associated with loss of heterozygosity, microsatellite instability, or a mutator phenotype. The signal sequences of TGFBR1 and TGFBR1*6A are cleaved at the same site resulting in identical mature receptors. TGFBR1*6A may switch TGF-beta growth inhibitory signals into growth stimulatory signals in MCF-7 breast cancer cells and in DLD-1 colorectal cancer cells. Conclusions: TGFBR1*6A is somatically acquired in 29.5% of liver metastases from colorectal cancer and may bestow cancer cells with a growth advantage in the presence of TGF-beta. The functional consequences of this conversion appear to be mediated by the TGFBR1*6A signal sequence rather than by the mature receptor. The results highlight a new facet of TGF-beta signaling in cancer and suggest that TGFBR1*6A may represent a potential therapeutic target in cancer.
