    • Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité were the symbolic words and shouts of millions and millions hopes in the mouths of millions and millions people all around the world in the 18th and 19th century. Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité are still the symbols of democracy during the 20th and 21st century. These wishful words have not lost their meaning during the centuries, although they historically represent the birth of the modern world and reflect the thoughts of enlightenment already in the 18th century. They were realized in the French revolution and the tricolor flag. The Nordic countries have taken seriously the whispers of the enlightenment. They have transferred the words into the field of education. In the name of enlightenment Nordic countries were among the first to develop a wide adult education system in order to cultivate their adult population. They believed, that it is education which gives the people the liberty, equality and fraternity. The very core of the idea of the Nordic welfare state is educational equality as the spearhead to the social equality of the whole nation. In this book we reflect together the state of the art of adult education research in the Nordic countries in the beginning of the third millenium. What is left of the historical tradition of enlightenment and the hopes of the people? Has there been a change in the politics of Nordic adult education research towards the neo-liberalism? What are the challenges of today and how they may be answered? What has the Nordic adult education research to offer to the wider audience of the globalising world? Some answers to these questions are suggested in this book. The answers are presented by the most eminent as well as by junior researchers within the field in Nordic adult education research. Have a seat and read.

  • Angiopoietin-1/angiopoietin-2 ratio for prediction of preeclampsia
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Hypertension. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0895-7061 .- 1941-7225. ; 22:8, s. 891-895
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: A number of different biophysical and biochemical markers have been proposed as predictors of preeclampsia. Factors involved in the angiogenic balance are suggested as candidate markers. The purpose of this prospective, longitudinal cohort study was to determine whether a ratio between Angiopoietin-1 (Ang-1) and Angiopoietin-2 (Ang-2) can be used to predict preeclampsia in a low-risk population. METHODS: A cohort of healthy pregnant women (n = 469) were enrolled at gestational weeks 8-12. Plasma samples were collected at gestational weeks 10, 25, 28, 33, and 37. By using commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits Ang-1 and Ang-2 were analyzed. RESULTS: The median Ang-1/Ang-2 ratio increased during pregnancy in all women, but the ratios were significantly lower at gestational weeks 25 and 28 in women who later developed preeclampsia than in normal pregnant women (1.49 compared to 2.19 and 2.12 compared to 3.54, P < 0.05 and P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Our data indicate that in a low-risk population of women the Ang-1/Ang-2 ratio in plasma constitutes a possible biomarker for prediction of later onset of preeclampsia.

  • Recrystallization of waxy maize starch during manufacturing of starch microspheres for drug delivery: Influence of excipients
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Carbohydrate Polymers. - : Elsevier BV. - 0144-8617. ; 69:4, s. 732-741
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The formation of ordered structure, such as crystallites, in starch was studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The influence of time/temperature treatment and additives such as polyethylene glycol (PEG), bovine serum albumin (BSA) and a carbonate buffer on the formation was investigated. The experiments were planned with a CCC (Central Composite Circumscribed) design. For all three investigated systems it could be concluded that the incubation time at 6 °C was the decisive factor for the amount of ordered structure obtained during the incubation, while the incubation time at 37 °C was the decisive factor for the thermal stability of the crystallites as expressed by Ton, Tm and Tc. The additives seemed to mainly affect the nucleation phase of crystallization process. The additives decreased the time required in order to obtain a certain level of ordering in the incubated starch samples. The carbonate buffer decreased the amount of ordered structure in starch as judged by DSC enthalpy values, while increasing the melting temperature of these structures. The additives PEG and BSA lowered the melting temperatures of the starch in the systems but increased the enthalpy values. By optimization procedure a specific amount of ordered structure with desired thermal characteristics could be predicted.
