  • MR imaging of intradural extramedullary tumors
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: Acta Radiologica. - 1600-0455. ; 33:3, s. 207-212
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Thirty-one consecutive intradural extramedullary spinal tumors examined with MR at 0.3 T were reviewed. In 13 of the patients myelography had been performed. There were 11 patients with meningeoma, 14 with neuroma, one ependymoma, 3 metastases, and 2 lipomas. All tumors were surgically removed and verified by histology. The intradural extramedullary location of the tumors was accurately assessed by MR imaging in all patients and by myelography in 10 of 13. The MR diagnoses were in accordance with the histologic findings in 74% of cases. Compression of the spinal cord or cauda equina with widening of the subarachnoid space above and below the mass or outward displacement of epidural fat was characteristic of the intradural extramedullary tumors. The signal intensity of meningeoma as well as of neuroma was slightly lower or equal to that of the cord on T1-weighted images, and equal to or higher than cord signal on T2-weighted images. Neuroma had a lower signal intensity on T1-weighted images and a higher signal intensity on T2-weighted images than meningeoma. Meningeoma appeared more homogeneous than neuroma and had a broad base towards the dura.

  • MR imaging of spinal lymphoma
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: Acta Radiologica. - 1600-0455. ; 33:4, s. 338-342
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fourteen patients with spinal lymphoma examined by MR imaging were reviewed. Thirteen of them also had extraspinal lymphoma. Vertebral involvement was found in 12 patients, epidural in 10, and paraspinal in 8 patients. On the basis of MR imaging at 0.3 T, spinal lymphoma may be divided into three types of growth pattern according to the main location: paraspinal, vertebral, and epidural. Most frequently, all three locations were found simultaneously on MR (7/14). In one patient the location was vertebral with epidural extension, in one paraspinal with vertebral extension, in 3 it was entirely vertebral, and in 2 entirely epidural. Multiple plane T1-weighted imaging gave complete information about the extent of spinal lymphoma. The signal intensity was lower than or equal to muscle and lower than bone marrow in paraspinal and vertebral lesions on T1-weighted images and high on T2-weighted images. Epidural lesions showed a hypo- or isointense signal relative to the cord on T1-weighted images except in one case and a hyperintense signal on T2-weighted images. Compression of the cord and cauda equina due to bulging of diseased vertebral bodies and epidural lesions was well demonstrated. MR imaging was also found useful in the follow-up of treatment.

  • Swedish obese subjects (SOS). Recruitment for an intervention study and a selected description of the obese state
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Obesity. ; 19, s. 465-479
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Department of Medicine, Sahlgren's Hospital, University of Göteborg, Sweden. SOS (Swedish obese subjects) is an on-going intervention trial designed to determine whether the mortality and morbidity rates among obese individuals who lose weight by surgical means (gastric banding, vertical banded gastroplasty and gastric by-pass) differ from the rates associated with conventional treatment. For this purpose, the study is recruiting a sample of obese men and women who constitute a registry of potential subjects from which the participants are drawn. Eligibility criteria for participation in the registry were: age at application 37-57 years and BMI greater than or equal to 34 kg/m2 for men and greater than or equal to 38 kg/m2 for women. Before receiving a health examination, all patients complete extensive questionnaires on current and past health status, utilization of medical care and medications, socio-economic status, psychological profiles, dietary habits, physical activity, weight history, and familial disposition to obesity. Each surgical case is matched to its optimal control in the registry, to ensure that the two groups do not differ systematically with respect to any of 18 matching variables that may affect prognosis. The first 1006 subjects included in the registry have been studied with respect to morbidity and compared with on-going population studies of men and women in Göteborg, Sweden. The relative risks of prevalent disease and symptoms associated with obesity in 50-year-old males and females respectively were 4.3 and 4.7 (dyspnoea), 14.7 and 11.8 (angina), 6.3 (myocardial infarction, males only), 2.1 and 4.5 (hypertension), 5.2 and 6.6 (diabetes), 4.6 and 26.1 (claudication) and 1.7 and 1.8 (gall bladder disease). Correspondingly, obese males and females display elevations of systolic and diastolic blood pressure, fasting glucose, insulin, triglyceride, and uric acid levels. However, total cholesterol was not increased in obese males and was in fact significantly lower in obese compared with reference women. HDL-cholesterol was lower in obese than reference men (data were not available in reference women). The rate of taking sick pensions was over twice as high in SOS obese patients than in population controls. Finally, comparison of measurements with self-reported prevalence estimates revealed a considerable amount of previously undiagnosed hypertension and diabetes in the obese subjects. These data suggest that the excess health risks associated with obesity may not be fully appreciated. PMID: 1322873 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

  • Time-resolved Harmonic-generation In An Ionizing Gas
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics B: Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0953-4075 .- 1361-6455. ; 27:14, s. 3291-3301
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on a time-resolved study of the fifth harmonic generated in xenon by 140 ps pulses from a Nd:YAG laser in the 10(13) W cm-2 intensity regime. Absolute timing between the driving laser pulse and the harmonic pulse could be determined by means of reference harmonics generated in non-linear crystals and a single common streak camera. Above a certain laser intensity the centre of the observed harmonic pulse was shifted earlier in time relative to the laser pulse. We found the intensity dependence of this shift to be approximately linear within the intensity range used which is consistent with the results of numerical simulations taking the ionization and dispersion of the xenon gas into account.
