  • Appearance of individual amino acid concentrations in arterial blood during steady-state infusions of different amino acid formulations to ICU patients in support of whole-body protein metabolism
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: JPEN. - 0148-6071. ; 30:4, s. 277-85
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Previous work has demonstrated a relationship between arterial amino acid concentrations and uptake of amino acids across peripheral tissues in healthy volunteers, as well as in chronically and acutely ill patients. The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether different amino acid profiles in commercially available amino acid formulations are translated into significantly different arterial amino acid concentrations presumably high enough to promote protein metabolism in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. METHODS: Nonprotein calories (60% glucose: 40% lipid) were simultaneously and constantly infused over 72 hours. Different free amino acid solutions were infused at random to each patient for 24 hours in order to determine the appearance of steady-state arterial concentrations of individual amino acids. Basal metabolic and nutrition states were defined after a 12-hour infusion period with glucose in each patient. Healthy volunteers receiving a standardized oral meal served as reference subjects in measurements of venous amino acid concentrations after normal oral food intake. RESULTS: The sum of all amino acids in arterial plasma increased significantly during steady-state infusions of all the free amino acid solutions vs basal state in ICU patients. Only glutamine, taurine, and tyrosine did not increase at all vs basal state during steady-state infusions of the 3 formulations. Alanine, arginine, citrulline, glycine, histidine, serine, methionine, phenylalanine, valine, and ornithine showed different concentration among the amino acid solutions during infusions. Healthy volunteers had significantly higher overall concentrations of amino acids in both fasted and fed state compared with ICU patients, which indicates that free amino acid solutions remain a limiting component in artificial nutrition to patients to promote arterial amino acid concentrations in the artificially fed state. CONCLUSIONS: It appears important to continue further improvement of composition profile in solutions of free amino acids to promote adequate uptake across organ beds in promotion of protein balance in artificially nourished patients.

  • Samtal, klassrumsklimat och elevers delaktighet : överväganden kring en deliberativ didaktik
  • 2007
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this dissertation is to study learning through deliberative dialogue, the social climate of the classroom, and certain aspects of student participation in civic education in upper secondary schools, as well as aspects of deliberative didactics. It takes its theoretical point of departure in John Dewey’s texts on democracy and education. An additional perspective on the social and moral aspects of democratic life is provided by Axel Honneth’s studies on disrespect and a morality of recognition. An empirical study is presented in which students and teachers were interviewed in focus groups about their opinions and experiences, on the basis of the aim of the dissertation and the research questions addressed. The analysis reveals a potential to learn civics thorough dialogue and discussion. A dialogue with deliberative qualities is characterized as one with a clearly defined purpose and relevant knowledge content. In the course of such a dialogue, the participants apply and develop certain abilities, some of which are identified in the study. Regarding the social climate in the classroom, especially during learning through dialogue and discussion, several difficulties and problematic situations were mentioned in the focus group interviews. These were problems related to “disturbing silence” and “troubling speech”. Honneth’s theory of moral recognition is in such situations seen as a basis for teachers’ professional reflections and for deliberative dialogues involving teacher and students. Concerning student participation and the civic education classroom as a form of democratic community and a public sphere, both students and teachers interviewed spoke of a balancing act between many different interests, some of which are discussed with a focus on the formation of interests. Other aspects studied are how a sense of community can be created and how the private and individualistic meet the public and common in civic education. It is concluded that the civic education classroom, considered as a public sphere, can be an arena for deliberation and thus develop a sense of community and a deliberative competence for use in a wider citizenship perspective. In the final chapter it is concluded that deliberative didactics can be seen as a didactic dimension of reflexive cooperation. It is characterized as a reflexive approach whereby the teacher invites the students to deliberate on issues of subject content, ways of working, the social climate of the classroom, and different aspects of participation and common interests. It is also argued that the practical cooperation – the actions and their consequences – following from intersubjective speech are as important as the dialogue itself.

  • Permian plant macrofossils from Fossilryggen, Vestfjella, Dronning Maud Land
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Antarctic Science. - 1365-2079. ; 17:1, s. 73-86
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A low diversity plant macrofossil assemblage described from the northern section of Fossiryggen, Vestfiella, Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica, is dominated by matted leaf impressions of Glossopteris sp. cf. G communis Feistmantel and Glossopteris sp. cf. G spatulata Pant A Singh, and in situ finely branched Vertebraria indica Royle rootlets. Equisetalean stems, rhizomes and leaf whorls (Pkyllotheca australis Brongniart emend. Townrow), isolated seeds, scale-leaves, and fragmentary gymnosperm axes represent minor components of the assemblage. The fossils are preserved in fine-grained, floodbasin sediments and dark palaeosols. Although lacking definitive biostratigraphical indices, the flora is considered to represent a Middle Permian assemblage based principally on lithological and palynological correlation with the southern section at Fossilryggen and broad similarities to mid-Permian plant assemblages elsewhere in Gondwana.

  • Development of a process integration tool for an iron ore upgrading process system
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Mine planning and equipment selection and environmental issues and waste management in energy and mineral production. - Irvine, Calif. : The Reading Matrix Inc.. - 9780978441609
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An industrial energy system is subject to different regulations and restrictions. Good integration between units within the production chain as well as integration with the community can lead to both environmental and energy savings. Process integration is a system oriented methodology to analyze whole production systems to find optimal system changes. A mathematical programming technique is being developed for the Swedish iron ore producing facility of LKAB in Malmberget. The mathematical model will be based on a mass and energy balance for the facility specified for the different unit operations. The development of a good mathematical model requires a systematic mapping of the energy and material flows within an iron ore producing facility. In this paper a conceptual model for the process integration tool is described.

  • Adsorption of antifouling booster biocides on metal oxide nanoparticles: Effect of different metal oxides and solvents
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Progress in Organic Coatings. - : Elsevier BV. - 0300-9440. ; 64:1, s. 20-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Controlling the release rate of biocides (antifouling agents) from a paint coating is a key issue for the development of multi-season antifouling marine coatings. One promising approach is the use of nanoparticles onto which biocides are adsorbed to prevent premature depletion of the biocide. Adsorption of one novel (Medetomidine) and six commercially available and widely used antifouling biocides (Chlorothalonile, Dichlofluanid, Diuron, Irgarol, Seanine, Tolylfluanid) onto oxide nanoparticles (Al2O3, CuO, MgO, SiO2, TiO2, ZnO) was investigated by HPLC and NMR in different organic solvents. Large differences in adsorption strength depending on the type of nanoparticle and solvent employed were observed. It was shown that nanoparticles coordinate preferentially with the imidazole moiety of Medetomidine. Independent of the type of particle this interaction was considerably stronger in comparison to the other biocides. However, the interaction strength was strongly dependant on the type of solvent, where the largest strongest interaction was achieved in o-xylene. In addition field tests were performed where a considerable decrease in release rate was displayed from coatings containing Medetomidine adsorbed to nanoparticles compared to coatings containing Medetomidine as single additive.

  • The Kullaberg peninsula – a glimpse of the Proterozoic evolution of SW Fennoscandia
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: GFF. - 2000-0863. ; 130:Part 1, s. 1-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Kullaberg peninsula in NW Skåne renders km-long, continuous exposures of the Proterozoic crystalline basement. We report ion microprobe (SIMS) U–Pb zircon ages for six key lithologies at Kullaberg that constrain the geological history of SW Fennoscandia for a considerable time period. Igneous zircon in three varieties of gneiss granite yield ages of 1694±7 Ma, 1693±7 Ma and 1663±14 Ma, in the same age range as orthogneisses further north in the same crustal segment. Partial melting, manifested by formation of pegmatite dykes and veins, occurred at 1473±6 Ma. Emplacement of mafic dykes, today seen as a large number of north-trending amphibolite sheets across the Kullaberg peninsula, is dated at 961±6 Ma. The dykes, which fall in the same age range as the Blekinge-Dalarna dolerites (978–945 Ma) predate an event of amphibolite facies deformation, which presumably relates to exhumation of the crust following shortly after the Sveconorwegian compressional stage. A pegmatite was emplaced at 934±6 Ma after the crust had been exhumed through the ductile-brittle boundary.
