  • Sex specific associations in genome wide association analysis of renal cell carcinoma.
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Human Genetics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1018-4813 .- 1476-5438. ; 27:10, s. 1589-1598
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) has an undisputed genetic component and a stable 2:1 male to female sex ratio in its incidence across populations, suggesting possible sexual dimorphism in its genetic susceptibility. We conducted the first sex-specific genome-wide association analysis of RCC for men (3227 cases, 4916 controls) and women (1992 cases, 3095 controls) of European ancestry from two RCC genome-wide scans and replicated the top findings using an additional series of men (2261 cases, 5852 controls) and women (1399 cases, 1575 controls) from two independent cohorts of European origin. Our study confirmed sex-specific associations for two known RCC risk loci at 14q24.2 (DPF3) and 2p21(EPAS1). We also identified two additional suggestive male-specific loci at 6q24.3 (SAMD5, male odds ratio (ORmale) = 0.83 [95% CI = 0.78-0.89], Pmale = 1.71 × 10-8 compared with female odds ratio (ORfemale) = 0.98 [95% CI = 0.90-1.07], Pfemale = 0.68) and 12q23.3 (intergenic, ORmale = 0.75 [95% CI = 0.68-0.83], Pmale = 1.59 × 10-8 compared with ORfemale = 0.93 [95% CI = 0.82-1.06], Pfemale = 0.21) that attained genome-wide significance in the joint meta-analysis. Herein, we provide evidence of sex-specific associations in RCC genetic susceptibility and advocate the necessity of larger genetic and genomic studies to unravel the endogenous causes of sex bias in sexually dimorphic traits and diseases like RCC.

  • Hydrogen-poor Superluminous Supernovae from the Pan-STARRS1 Medium Deep Survey
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : American Astronomical Society. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 852:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present light curves and classification spectra of 17 hydrogen-poor superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) from the Pan-STARRS1 Medium Deep Survey (PS1 MDS). Our sample contains all objects from the PS1. MDS sample with spectroscopic classification that are similar to either of the prototypes SN 2005ap or SN 2007bi, without an explicit limit on luminosity. With a redshift range 0.3 < z < 1.6, PS1. MDS is the first SLSN sample primarily probing the high-redshift population; our multifilter PS1 light curves probe the rest-frame UV emission, and hence the peak of the spectral energy distribution. We measure the temperature evolution and construct bolometric light curves, and find peak luminosities of (0.5-5) x 10(44) erg s(-1) and lower limits on the total radiated energies of (0.3-2) x 10(51) erg. The light curve shapes are diverse, with both rise and decline times spanning a factor of similar to 5 and several examples of double-peaked light curves. When correcting for the flux-limited nature of our survey, we find a median peak luminosity at 4000 angstrom of M-4000 = -21.1 mag and a spread of sigma = 0.7 mag.

  • Loss of chromosome Y leads to down regulation of KDM5D and KDM6C epigenetic modifiers in clear cell renal cell carcinoma
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Scientific reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322. ; 7, s. 44876-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent genomic studies of sporadic clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) have uncovered novel driver genes and pathways. Given the unequal incidence rates among men and women (male:female incidence ratio approaches 2:1), we compared the genome-wide distribution of the chromosomal abnormalities in both sexes. We observed a higher frequency for the somatic recurrent chromosomal copy number variations (CNVs) of autosomes in male subjects, whereas somatic loss of chromosome X was detected exclusively in female patients (17.1%). Furthermore, somatic loss of chromosome Y (LOY) was detected in about 40% of male subjects, while mosaic LOY was detected in DNA isolated from peripheral blood in 9.6% of them, and was the only recurrent CNV in constitutional DNA samples. LOY in constitutional DNA, but not in tumor DNA was associated with older age. Amongst Y-linked genes that were downregulated due to LOY, KDM5D and KDM6C epigenetic modifiers have functionally-similar X-linked homologs whose deficiency is involved in ccRCC progression. Our findings establish somatic LOY as a highly recurrent genetic defect in ccRCC that leads to downregulation of hitherto unsuspected epigenetic factors, and suggest that different mechanisms may underlie the somatic and mosaic LOY observed in tumors and peripheral blood, respectively.

  • CHEOPS (CHaracterizing ExOPlanets Satellite) Mission
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of Science. - 1824-8039. ; 2016-May
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Characterizing ExOPlanet Satellite (CHEOPS) mission was selected in October 2012 by ESA as the first small mission. It will be a ultra-high precision photometer dedicated to the observation of transits of known exoplanets on bright stars, for which the mass has already been measured via ground-based spectroscopic surveys. Its precision will allow the accurate determination of the planetary radii and, by consequence, the planetary bulk density. CHEOPS will also unveil transiting exoplanets of interest for in-depth characterization, a legacy for future instruments suited to the spectroscopic characterization of exoplanetary atmospheres.

  • Observation of rotation about the longest principal axis in Zr 89
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. - 2469-9985. ; 99:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-spin states in Zr89 were populated in the Se80(C13,4n) reaction, and γ-ray coincidences were measured using the Indian National Gamma Array. The level scheme of Zr89 has been extended up to spin I=49/2 with the observation of a new dipole band. Directional correlation and polarization asymmetries of the γ rays have been measured to determine spin and parity of the levels. Line shapes of several transitions have been analyzed to determine lifetimes of the levels. Possible configurations of the band have been discussed using the cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky model. The calculations suggest a triaxial shape of the nucleus at high spins, and the band may represent rotation of the nucleus about the longest axis.

  • Refined betatron tune measurements by mixing beam position data
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Accelerators and Beams. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2469-9888. ; 22:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The measurement of the betatron tunes in a circular accelerator is of paramount importance due to their impact on beam dynamics. The resolution of the these measurements, when using turn-by-turn (TBT) data from beam position monitors, is greatly limited by the available number of turns in the signal. Because of decoherence from finite chromaticity and/ or amplitude detuning, the transverse betatron oscillations appear to be damped in the TBT signal. On the other hand, an adequate number of samples is needed, if precise and accurate tune measurements are desired. In this paper, a method is presented that allows for very precise tune measurements within a very small number of turns. The theoretical foundation of this method is presented with results from numerical and tracking simulations and experimental TBT data which are recorded at electron and proton circular accelerators.
