  • Discovery of a radiation component from the Vela pulsar reaching 20 teraelectronvolts
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nature Astronomy. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 2397-3366. ; 7:11, s. 1341-1350
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gamma-ray observations have established energetic isolated pulsars as outstanding particle accelerators and antimatter factories. However, many questions are still open regarding the acceleration and radiation processes involved, as well as the locations where they occur. The radiation spectra of all gamma-ray pulsars observed to date show strong cutoffs or a break above energies of a few gigaelectronvolts. Using the High Energy Stereoscopic System's Cherenkov telescopes, we discovered a radiation component from the Vela pulsar which emerges beyond this generic cutoff and extends up to energies of at least 20 teraelectronvolts. This is an order of magnitude larger than in the case of the Crab pulsar, the only other pulsar detected in the teraelectronvolt energy range. Our results challenge the state-of-the-art models for the high-energy emission of pulsars. Furthermore, they pave the way for investigating other pulsars through their multiteraelectronvolt emission, thereby imposing additional constraints on the acceleration and emission processes in their extreme energy limit. The H.E.S.S. gamma-ray observatory has observed gamma rays with energies of at least 20 TeV from a pulsar, an energy regime that is hard to reconcile with the existing theories of gamma-ray production for such objects.

  • Aversion encoded in the subthalamic nucleus
  • 2024
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Activation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) is associated with the stopping of ongoing behavior via the basal ganglia. However, we recently observed that optogenetic STN excitation induced a strong jumping/escaping behavior. We hypothesized that STN activation is aversive. To test this, place preference was assessed. Optogenetic excitation of the STN caused potent place aversion. Causality between STN activation and aversion has not been demonstrated previously. The lateral habenula (LHb) is a critical hub for aversion. Optogenetic stimulation of the STN indeed caused firing of LHb neurons, but with delay, suggesting the involvement of a polysynaptic circuit. To unravel a putative pathway, the ventral pallidum (VP) was investigated. VP receives projections from the STN and in turn projects to the LHb. Optogenetic excitation of STN-VP terminals caused firing of VP neurons and induced aversive behavior. This study identifies the STN as critical hub for aversion, potentially mediated via an STN-VP-LHb pathway.

  • libNetVirt : The network virtualization library
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: 2012 IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC). - : IEEE conference proceedings. - 9781457720536 ; , s. 5543-5547
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Network virtualization has been an important research topic for many years but still suffers from the lack of an abstraction level like the one present in virtualization of computing and storage. Our work in progress presented here proposes an architecture for such a network virtualization abstraction. It is deployed as a library, similar to libvirt in computer virtualization, with a unified interface towards the underlying network specific drivers. The architecture will allow management tools to be independent of the underlying technologies. In addition, it will enable programmatic and on-demand creation of virtual networks. A common set of calls is defined to instantiate different virtual networks, using a single node view to provide the user with a suitable abstraction of the network. We describe a prototype of our proposed architecture on top of an OpenFlow-enabled network. We demonstrate its feasibility for creating isolated virtual networks in a programmatic and on demand fashion.
