  • The Great Dun Fell experiment 1995 : An overview
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Atmospheric Research. - 0169-8095. ; 50:3-4, s. 151-184
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During March and April of 1995 a major international field project was conducted at the UMIST field station site on Great Dun Fell in Cumbria, Northern England. The hill cap cloud which frequently envelopes this site was used as a natural flow through reactor to examine the sensitivity of the cloud microphysics to the aerosol entering the cloud and also to investigate the effects of the cloud in changing the aerosol size distribution, chemical composition and associated optical properties. To investigate these processes, detailed measurements of the cloud water chemistry (including the chemistry of sulphur compounds, organic and inorganic oxidised nitrogen and ammonia), cloud microphysics and properties of the aerosol and trace gas concentrations upwind and downwind of the cap cloud were undertaken. It was found that the cloud droplet number was generally strongly correlated to aerosol number concentration, with up to 2000 activated droplets cm-3 being observed in the most polluted conditions. In such conditions it was inferred that hygroscopic organic compounds were important in the activation process. Often, the size distribution of the aerosol was substantially modified by the cloud processing, largely due to the aqueous phase oxidation of S(IV) to sulphate by hydrogen peroxide, but also through the uptake and fixing of gas phase nitric acid as nitrate, increasing the calculated optical scattering of the aerosol substantially (by up to 24%). New particle formation was also observed in the ultrafine aerosol mode (at about 5 nm) downwind of the cap cloud, particularly in conditions of low total aerosol surface area and in the presence of ammonia and HCl gases. This was seen to occur at night as well as during the day via a mechanism which is not yet understood. The implications of these results for parameterising aerosol growth in Global Climate Models are explored.

  • Spin yields of neutron-rich nuclei from deep inelastic reactions
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 60:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The potential for using deep inelastic reactions to populate high-spin states in neutron-rich nuclei is studied in a series of experiments using GAMMASPHERE for gamma-ray detection and a silicon strip detector for measuring the angles of projectilelike and targetlike fragments. In three experiments 61 new transitions up to a maximum spin of 22 (h) over bar in 12 neutron-rich rare-earth nuclei were found. We observe that gamma-ray yields as a function of spin are flatter for all neutron transfer products than for inelastic excitation of either the projectile or target nucleus. Calculations are presented which indicate that this difference cannot be accounted for by quasielastic processes, but more likely are the result of larger energy loss processes, such as deep inelastic reactions. • 13C and15N-chemical shift anisotropy of ampicillin and penicillin-V studied by 2D-PASS and CP/MAS NMR
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Journal of magnetic resonance. - : Elsevier BV. - 1090-7807 .- 1096-0856. ; 135:1, s. 144-155
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The principal values of the chemical shift tensors of all13C and15N sites in two antibiotics, ampicillin and penicillin-V, were determined by 2-dimensionalphaseadjustedspinningsideband (2D-PASS) and conventional CP/MAS experiments. The13C and15N chemical shift anisotropies (CSA), and their confidence limits, were evaluated using a Mathematica program. The CSA values suggest a revised assignment of the 2-methyl13C sites in the case of ampicillin. We speculate on a relationship between the chemical shift principal values of many of the13C and15N sites and the β-lactam ring conformation

  • Cross-neutralization of hantaviruses with immune sera from experimentally infected animals and from hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome patients.
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Journal of Infectious Diseases. - 0022-1899 .- 1537-6613. ; 172:6, s. 1581-4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Plaque-reduction neutralization tests were done with eight of nine known representative hantaviruses and immune sera from experimentally infected animals and from patients with hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) or hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). Results obtained with animal sera demonstrated each virus to be antigenically unique. Neutralization with the HPS patient sera was highest with Sin Nombre (SN) virus and to a lesser extent with Black Creek Canal (BCC) virus. Sera from Korean HFRS patients reacted best with Hantaan virus, but cross-reactivity with all other viruses except Thottapalayam (TPM) virus was also observed. Sera from Swedish HFRS patients reacted best with Puumala virus but cross-reacted with Prospect Hill, SN, and BCC viruses and to a lesser extent with all of the other viruses except TPM virus.

  • Relative deformations of superdeformed bands in Ce-131,Ce-132
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 76:19, s. 3510-3513
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The quadrupole moments Q(0) of five superdeformed bands in Ce-131,Ce-132 have been established using the Doppler-shift attenuation method; for the first time, we can compare relative deformations of yrast and excited bands in different nuclei to an accuracy of similar or equal to(5-7)%. Four of the five bands have very similar deformations, while the excited band in Ce-131 has a somewhat larger quadrupole moment. Important new information is presented on the shape-driving force of the vi(13/2) orbital, the stability of the second minimum with respect to particle excitations, the relative deformations of identical bands, the nature of the sidefeeding, and the time scale of the decay process.

  • Lifetime measurements of a triaxial band in Ce-133
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Acta Physica Hungarica A. - 1219-7580 .- 1588-2675. ; 7:1, s. 111-112
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Doppler shift attenuation method has been used to determine the transition quadrupole moment of a triaxial band belonging to the gamma-soft nucleus, Ce-133. Doppler broadened lineshape (DBLS) analysis has revealed the magnitude of the Q(t) value to be similar to 2.4 eb. This contribution provides new information of (i) the transition quadrupole moment of this band (ii) the lifetimes of in-band and sidefeeding transitions and (iii) the relative deformations of coexisting nuclear shapes.
