  • Structure and slow dynamics of protein hydration water
  • 2018
  • In: Journal of Molecular Liquids. - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-7322 .- 1873-3166. ; 268, s. 903-910
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We report results on the structure, local order and dynamics of water surrounding a lysozyme protein. The local order of water molecules is as much tetrahedral as in bulk water already at close vicinity of the protein but the number of hydrogen bonds depends more on the distance from the protein and gradually recovers bulk value upon moving outer. The dynamics of water seems in general to be more affected than its structure by the presence of the protein. An extremely long-relaxation detected in hydration water appears in the first monolayer around the protein, and the slow down is enhanced at low temperature. The dynamics of water within a layer of thickness 6 A is sub-diffusive up to about similar to 1 ns, above 1 ns we observe a crossover toward a hopping regime over a length-scale larger than that of nearest neighbors molecules. This hopping seems connected to transient trapping of water molecules on some specific protein domains.

  • The influence of surface defects on the mechanical and tribological properties of VN-based arc-evaporated coatings
  • 2013
  • In: Wear. - : Elsevier BV. - 0043-1648 .- 1873-2577. ; 297:1-2, s. 1111-1119
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The influence of surface defects, i.e. droplets and craters, on the mechanical and tribological properties of arc-evaporated VxN coatings deposited on cemented carbide has been investigated in a scratching contact using a diamond stylus and a sliding contact using a stainless steel pin. Post-test characterisation using 3D optical surface profilometry and scanning electron microscopy was performed in order to investigate the mechanical and tribological response of the coatings. The results show that scratch induced coating cracking mainly is restricted to larger droplets showing a low interfacial bonding to the adjacent coating matrix. The influence of coating defects on the cohesive strength, i.e. the tendency to chipping of small coating fragments, was found to be relatively small. In contrast, the presence of defects may have a significant impact on the interfacial adhesive strength, increasing the tendency to spalling. In sliding contact, surface defects such as droplets and craters have a strong impact on the tribological behaviour of the coatings causing abrasive wear of the less hard counter material surface and material transfer to the coating, both mechanisms affecting the friction characteristics of sliding contact tribo system.

  • Languages of Exile : Migration and Multilingualism in Twentieth-Century Literature
  • 2013
  • Editorial collection (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Languages of Exile examines the relationship between geographic and linguistic border crossings in twentieth-century literature. Like no period before it, the last century was marked by the experience of expatriation, forcing exiled writers to confront the fact of linguistic difference. Literary writing can be read as the site where that confrontation is played out aesthetically – at the intersection between native and acquired language, between indigenous and alien, between self and other – in a complex multilingual dynamic specific to exile and migration. The essays collected here explore this dynamic from a comparative perspective, addressing the paragons of modernism as well as less frequently studied authors, from Joseph Conrad and Peter Weiss to Agota Kristof and Malika Mokeddem. The essays are international in their approach; they deal with the junctions and gaps between English, French, German, Hungarian, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Swedish and other languages. The literary works and practices addressed include modernist poetry and prose, philosophical criticism and autobiography, DADA performance, sound art and experimental music theatre. This volume reveals both the wide range of creative strategies developed in response to the interstitial situation of exile and the crucial role of exile for a renewed understanding of twentieth-century literature.

  • Points for Consideration for dengue vaccine introduction : recommendations by the Dengue Vaccine Initiative
  • 2016
  • In: Expert Review of Vaccines. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1476-0584 .- 1744-8395. ; 15:4, s. 529-538
  • Research review (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Dengue is a public health problem in the tropics and subtropics. There are several vaccine candidates in clinical development. However, there may be gaps in the new vaccine introduction after vaccine licensure before it becomes available in developing countries. In anticipation of the first dengue vaccine candidate to be licensed, Dengue Vaccine Initiative (DVI) and, its predecessor, Pediatric Dengue Vaccine Initiative (PDVI) have been working on points for consideration to accelerate evidence-based dengue vaccine introduction, once a vaccine becomes available. In this paper, we review the history of PDVI and its successor, the DVI, and elaborate on the points of consideration for dengue vaccine introduction.

  • Sedentary Time and Physical Activity Surveillance Through Accelerometer Pooling in Four European Countries
  • 2017
  • In: Sports Medicine. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0112-1642 .- 1179-2035. ; 47:7, s. 1421-1435
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Objective: The objective of this study was to pool, harmonise and re-analyse national accelerometer data from adults in four European countries in order to describe population levels of sedentary time and physical inactivity. Methods: Five cross-sectional studies were included from England, Portugal, Norway and Sweden. ActiGraph accelerometer count data were centrally processed using the same algorithms. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted to study the associations of sedentary time and physical inactivity with sex, age, weight status and educational level, in both the pooled sample and the separate study samples. Results: Data from 9509 participants were used. On average, participants were sedentary for 530 min/day, and accumulated 36 min/day of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity. Twenty-three percent accumulated more than 10 h of sedentary time/day, and 72% did not meet the physical activity recommendations. Nine percent of all participants were classified as high sedentary and low active. Participants from Norway showed the highest levels of sedentary time, while participants from England were the least physically active. Age and weight status were positively associated with sedentary time and not meeting the physical activity recommendations. Men and higher-educated people were more likely to be highly sedentary, while women and lower-educated people were more likely to be inactive. Conclusions: We found high levels of sedentary time and physical inactivity in four European countries. Older people and obese people were most likely to display these behaviours and thus deserve special attention in interventions and policy planning. In order to monitor these behaviours, accelerometer-based cross-European surveillance is recommended.
