Selection for protection from insolation results in the visual isolation of Yellow-eyed Penguin Megadyptes antipodes nests

- The concealed and widely dispersed nests of the rare and endangered Yellow-eyed Penguin Megadyptes antipodes, or hoiho, have been considered to reflect an essential requirement for the visual isolation of nest sites from conspecifics. However, this may be a consequence of selection for habitat features that provide protection from insolation, thereby minimising the risk of heat stress. To help improve the understanding of hoiho nesting requirements and the effectiveness of habitat restoration, we aimed to determine whether visual isolation from conspecifics or protection from insolation is the primary driver of hoiho nest site selection. We compared the mean maximum distance of visibility and the mean percentage insolation cover of active nests with randomly sampled unused sites in flax Phormium tenax and Hebe elliptica coastal scrub at Boulder Beach, and in coastal forest at Hinahina Cove, New Zealand, 2006-2007. Results of univariate tests and the evaluation of logistic regression models suggested that the amount of insolation cover was more important than visibility for hoiho nest site selection, particularly in flax and scrub. In addition, Spearman's correlations indicated that decreasing insolation cover significantly increased the visibility of nests in the forest habitat, and had a similar effect on inter-nest distance in flax. We infer that hoiho nest site selection and distribution are influenced primarily by the location and density of micro-habitat features (particularly within 1 m of the ground) that provide optimal protection from insolation, possibly along with other important features such as a firm backing structure. Strong selection for these features results in the typical but non-essential visual isolation of nest sites from conspecifics. Restoration of nesting habitats with a relatively high density and diversity of vegetation and solid structures within 1 m of the ground may eventually provide an optimal availability and quality of suitable nest sites.

- An important part of governmental industrial policy is to support entrepreneurship and the creation of new businesses through various programmes. These are often organized at regional or local level by support organizations such as innovation centres (at universities), regional development funds and science parks. Earlier studies of business support structures have focused mainly on the `demand' side; that is, on participants' perceptions of the usefulness of taking part in different support programmes. These studies have shown that there is a mismatch between the supply and demand side in business support activities. This paper deals with the supply side's view of organizing support activities for entrepreneurs and new businesses. The author analyses the responses to a questionnaire survey of business support organizations in Sweden. The results show that the support organizations are well aware of the problems the participants have - relating to, among other things, time, educational methods, finance, priorities, and access to information. At the same time, the support organizations disagree with suggestions that they are too theoretical in their teaching, lack experience in the problems of small businesses, offer inflexible programmes, have problems communicating, or lack teaching expertise (in, for example, training programmes). This paper discusses the gap in perception between the suppliers and their market and addresses the policy issues it raises. The implications for training for entrepreneurship and new businesses are also addressed.

- There are more aspiring artists than available positions for artists in artistic labor markets. For fiction writers, the publication of a first book often means getting the first big break in their literary career and entering the literary world as a published author. However, few writers succeed in their aspiration to become published. This article draws on interviews with 59 writers in Sweden, to explore the tension resulting from the passing of time while aspiring for, but not having, the first big break. The aspiration among writers is an orientation towards attempting to publicly communicate their fiction writing through a published book. Interruptions to the aspiration can create existential dilemmas of unfulfilled aspirations. The unfulfillment of the aspiration may be existentially responded to through ‘urgency’ or ‘floating’, where the writer actively pushes for success or loses the aspiration. The article addresses aspiration in situations where artists’ chances for success are uncertain and are decided by gatekeepers. The theoretical framework developed is useful for understanding aspiration over time vis-a-vis existential dimensions of artistic careers which do not conform to an aspired for ideal career.

- In the present study, biosorption of Ni2+ by Na-loaded (raw algae treated with NaCl), algae Pelvetia canaliculata Ochrophyta, was studied in a batch system. Kinetics and equilibrium experiments were conducted at different pH values (2.0, 3.0 and 4.0). The metal uptake capacity decreased by decreasing the solution pH, suggesting that competition exists between hydrogen ions, present in high concentrations at low pH values, and metal ions. An ion-exchange model, considering two different binding sites, sulfonic and carboxylic groups, was developed to describe equilibrium data. A mass transfer model, considering intraparticle resistance was also developed to describe kinetics in a batch system. The release of sodium ions during the uptake of nickel ions revealed that the biosorption mechanism involved ion-exchange between sodium and nickel ions with a stoichiometrical ratio of 2:1. Nickel showed higher affinity to the sulfonic groups than for carboxylic ones of algae biomass. Kinetic results show that hydrogen ions diffuse faster as compared to nickel and sodium ions. The maximum uptake capacity of Na-loaded algae, P. canaliculata, for Ni2+ was found to be ca. 100 mg/g at pH 4.0.

- In 2009, Sweden launched a freedom-of-choice reform that gave municipalities the option to introduce standardized quasi-markets in social services. The reform was initially popular to adopt in home care until the share of adopting municipalities leveled out just above 50 percent. In recent years, the trend has reversed, and several municipalities have abolished their choice system. Compared with municipalities with choice systems, the abolishing municipalities are more rural with fewer inhabitants. A fixed-effects regression suggests that decreases in the market share of private providers, political shifts towards the left, and increasing costs may have contributed to the abolition of choice systems.

Comparison of local energy conversion estimates from Cluster with global MHD simulations

- The local energy conversion across the magnetopause has been estimated with Cluster for two magnetopause crossings. A load region, conversion from magnetic to particle energy, was identified on the dayside high-latitude magnetopause during south/dawnward IMF. Another crossing of the dawn flank magnetotail during dominantly duskward IMF was identified as a generator region where the magnetosphere is loaded with magnetic energy. The observations have been compared to results of the BATS-R-US global MHD simulation based on observed IMF conditions. BATS-R-US reproduced the magnetopause regions crossed by Cluster as a load and a generator region, correspondingly. The magnitude of the estimated energy conversion from Cluster and the model are in quite good agreement. BATS-R-US cannot reproduce the observed sharp magnetopause and some topological differences between the observations and the model occur.
