  • The role of parental congruence in pre-school children's screen time, moderated by parental education
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Acta Paediatrica. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0803-5253 .- 1651-2227. ; 112:7, s. 1504-1510
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AimThis study investigated whether parental congruency regarding screen time (ST) is associated with ST in pre-school children. In addition, we investigated whether parental education levels moderated this relationship.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted in 2015–2016 in Finland (N = 688). Parents completed a questionnaire reporting their children's sedentary behaviour, their parental congruency regarding ST rules, and their educational level. Associations were examined using linear regression.ResultsChildren of parents with higher congruence regarding ST rules engaged in less ST, this was moderated by parental education levels. Children whose parents had a high level of education and parents' who strongly agree or somewhat agree on ST rules was negatively associated with ST. Furthermore, children whose parents had a medium level of education and parents' who strongly agree on ST rules was negatively associated with ST.ConclusionChildren of parents who agree on ST rules engaged in less ST compared with children of parents who do not agree on ST rules. Providing advice to parents regarding parental congruency could be the focus of future interventions.

  • Associations of physical activity, sedentary time, and diet quality with biomarkers of inflammation in children
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Sport Science. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1746-1391 .- 1536-7290. ; 22:6, s. 906-915
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigated the associations of physical activity (PA), sedentary time (ST), and diet quality with biomarkers of inflammation in 390 children (192 girls, 198 boys) aged 6–8 years. PA energy expenditure (PAEE), light PA, moderate PA (MPA), vigorous PA (VPA), moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA), and ST were assessed by combined movement and heart rate sensor. Finnish Children Healthy Eating Index was calculated using data from 4 d food records. Body fat percentage (BF%) was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (Hs-CRP), leptin, interleukin-6 (IL-6), adiponectin, tumour necrosis factor-α, and glycoprotein acetyls were measured from fasting blood samples. PAEE, MPA, VPA, and MVPA were inversely associated with hs-CRP (β=−191 to −139, 95% CI=−0.294 to −0.024), leptin (β=−0.409 to −0.301, 95% CI=−0.499 to −0.107), IL-6 (β=−0.136 to −0.104, 95% CI=−0.240 to −0.001) and PAEE, MPA, and MVPA were inversely associated with glycoprotein acetyls (β=−0.117 to −0.103, 95% CI=−0.213 to −0.001). ST was directly associated with hs-CRP (β=0.170, 95% CI=0.070–0.269), leptin (β=0.355, 95% CI=0.265–0.445), and IL-6 (β=0.105, 95% CI=0.005–0.205). VPA was inversely associated with hs-CRP, leptin, and IL-6 in children with higher BF% (β=−0.344 to −0.181, 95% CI=−0.477 to −0.033) but not among children with lower BF% (β=−0.007–0.033, 95% CI=−0.183–0.184). In conclusion, PA was inversely and ST directly associated with circulating levels of biomarkers of inflammation among children. Furthermore, we observed that PA was inversely associated with these biomarkers for inflammation in children with a higher BF%. Highlights Systemic inflammation, as indicated by increased circulating concentrations of biomarkers for inflammation, may be important in causal pathways leading to insulin resistance, sub-clinical atherosclerosis, and eventually clinical manifestations of cardiovascular diseases. Higher levels of physical activity and lower levels of sedentary time were associated with more favourable inflammatory profile. Body fat percentage modified these associations and especially vigorous intensity physical activity was inversely associated with biomarkers of inflammation on children with higher body fat percentage but not in children with lower body fat percentage.

  • Eye tracking : empirical foundations for a minimal reporting guideline
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Behavior Research Methods. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1554-3528. ; 55:1, s. 364-416
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we present a review of how the various aspects of any study using an eye tracker (such as the instrument, methodology, environment, participant, etc.) affect the quality of the recorded eye-tracking data and the obtained eye-movement and gaze measures. We take this review to represent the empirical foundation for reporting guidelines of any study involving an eye tracker. We compare this empirical foundation to five existing reporting guidelines and to a database of 207 published eye-tracking studies. We find that reporting guidelines vary substantially and do not match with actual reporting practices. We end by deriving a minimal, flexible reporting guideline based on empirical research (Section "An empirically based minimal reporting guideline").

  • Motivation 2 Quit (M2Q): A cluster randomized controlled trial evaluating the effectiveness of Tobacco Cessation on Prescription in Swedish primary healthcare
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Plos One. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 17
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective To evaluate the effectiveness of Tobacco Cessation on Prescription (TCP) compared to standard treatment in socioeconomically disadvantaged areas in Swedish primary healthcare (PHC). Study design A pragmatic cluster randomized controlled trial, where randomization was conducted at the PHC center level using a computer-generated random allocation sequence. Setting 18 PHC centers in socioeconomically disadvantaged areas in Stockholm. Participants 250 adult daily tobacco users (56% female, 41% foreign born) with Swedish social security numbers and permanent resident permits, fluent in Swedish or Arabic, of which 140 responded to the follow-up at 6 months and 139 to the follow-up at 12 months. No blinding was applied. Interventions TCP (tobacco cessation counseling for ≥10 minutes, an individualized prescription for tobacco cessation treatment and follow-up on ≥1 occasion) compared to standard treatment. Primary and secondary outcome measures The primary outcome was self-reported 7-day abstinence at 6 months and the secondary outcomes included self-reported 7-day abstinence at 12 months and 3-month continued abstinence at 6 and 12 months follow-up. Results PHC centers were randomized to the intervention group (n = 8) and control group (n = 10). At the PHC centers, 250 patients (TCP n = 188, standard treatment n = 62) were recruited. There was a statistically significant effect of TCP compared to standard treatment for the outcomes 7-day abstinence at 6 months (OR adjusted 5.4, 95% CI 1.57 to 18.93) and 3-month continued abstinence at 6 (OR adjusted 6.4, 95% CI 1.30 to 31.27) and 12 months follow-up (OR adjusted 7.8, 95% CI 1.25 to 48.82). Conclusions TCP may be effective in achieving abstinence from tobacco use compared to standard treatment in the given setting but due to several limitations, resulting in high attrition rates and a low statistical power in the study, more research is needed to evaluate this.

  • Policy documents considering biodiversity, land use, and climate in the European Arctic reveal visible, hidden, and imagined nexus approaches
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: One Earth. - : Cell Press. - 2590-3330 .- 2590-3322.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Arctic is experiencing rapid and interlinked socio-environmental changes. Therefore, governance approaches that take the complex interactions between climate change, biodiversity loss, increasing land use pressures, and local livelihoods into account are needed: nexus approaches. However, an overview of whether and to what extent Arctic policies address these nexus elements in concert has been missing. Here we analyzed a large sample of publicly available assessment reports and policy documents from the terrestrial European Arctic. Our results show that, although nexus approaches are widely adopted in Arctic policy reporting, the emphasis varies among the governance levels, and documents underestimate certain interactions: local communities and traditional livelihoods are seldom seen as actors with agency and impact. Practical implementations were identified as potential advancements in Arctic governance: ecosystem-specific, technological, and authoritative solutions; co-production of knowledge; and adaptive co-management. Implementation of nexus approaches can promote more holistic environmental governance and guide cross-sectoral policies.

  • The McSAFE project - High-performance Monte Carlo based methods for safety demonstration : From proof of concept to industry applications
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Conference on Physics of Reactors. - : EDP Sciences. ; , s. 943-950
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The increasing use of Monte Carlo methods for core analysis is fostered by the huge and cheap computer power available nowadays e.g. in large HPC. Apart from the classical criticality calculations, the application of Monte Carlo methods for depletion analysis and cross section generation for diffusion and transport core simulators is also expanding. In addition, the development of multi-physics codes by coupling Monte Carlo solvers with thermal hydraulic codes (CFD, subchannel and system thermal hydraulics) to perform full core static core analysis at fuel assembly or pin level has progressed in the last decades. Finally, the extensions of the Monte Carlo codes to describe the behavior of prompt and delay neutrons, control rod movements, etc. has been started some years ago. Recent coupling of dynamic versions of Monte Carlo codes with subchannel codes make possible the analysis of transient e.g. rod ejection accidents and it paves the way for the simulation of any kind of design basis accidents as an alternative option to the use of diffusion and transport based deterministic solvers. The H2020 McSAFE Project is focused on the improvement of methods for depletion considering thermal hydraulic feedbacks, extension of the coupled neutronic/thermal hydraulic codes by the incorporation of a fuel performance solver, the development of dynamic Monte Carlo codes and the development of methods to handle large depletion problems and to reduce the statistical uncertainty. The validation of the multi-physics tools developed within McSAFE will be performed using plant data and unique tests e.g. the SPERT III E REA test. This paper will describe the main developments, solution approaches, and selected results.

  • Characterizing Performance of Freshwater Wetland Methane Models Across Time Scales at FLUXNET-CH4 Sites Using Wavelet Analyses
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences. - 2169-8953. ; 128:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Process-based land surface models are important tools for estimating global wetland methane (CH4) emissions and projecting their behavior across space and time. So far there are no performance assessments of model responses to drivers at multiple time scales. In this study, we apply wavelet analysis to identify the dominant time scales contributing to model uncertainty in the frequency domain. We evaluate seven wetland models at 23 eddy covariance tower sites. Our study first characterizes site-level patterns of freshwater wetland CH4 fluxes (FCH4) at different time scales. A Monte Carlo approach was developed to incorporate flux observation error to avoid misidentification of the time scales that dominate model error. Our results suggest that (a) significant model-observation disagreements are mainly at multi-day time scales (<15 days); (b) most of the models can capture the CH4 variability at monthly and seasonal time scales (>32 days) for the boreal and Arctic tundra wetland sites but have significant bias in variability at seasonal time scales for temperate and tropical/subtropical sites; (c) model errors exhibit increasing power spectrum as time scale increases, indicating that biases at time scales <5 days could contribute to persistent systematic biases on longer time scales; and (d) differences in error pattern are related to model structure (e.g., proxy of CH4 production). Our evaluation suggests the need to accurately replicate FCH4 variability, especially at short time scales, in future wetland CH4 model developments.
